Child cancer is increasing in Europe and mortality remains high. With innovative research, the iCOPE project will work to improve diagnostics, treatment and quality of life in patients. Every ten-year period, the incidence of cancer in European children increases by 6-10 %. And cancer mortality accounts for about 20 % of all deaths among children over the age of 1. The iCope project focuses on patients, industry, universities, students, regions and in particular researchers. The project aims to promote research and access to pooled research expertise and facilities, including joint biobanks and databases. This is through cross-border cooperation. It is hoped that the project will increase the uptake of expertise, research talent and patient numbers and that one of the largest multidisciplinary research environments in Europe can be created. Patients should thus have access to the latest research and benefit from the latest knowledge and the most modern treatments. With more patients, the interest in the industry increases and the hope is to strengthen the cooperation. The results of the research will thus be translated into the development of new technologies and treatment methods. The patient group’s situation in hospitals, schools and the home is also the focus of the project.

Cancer hos barn ökar i Europa och dödligheten är fortsatt hög. Med innovativ forskning ska projektet iCOPE arbeta för att förbättra diagnostik, behandling och livskvalitet hos patienterna. Per tioårsperiod ökar förekomsten av cancer hos europeiska barn med 6-10 procent. Och dödligheten i cancer utgör cirka 20 procent av alla dödsfall bland barn äldre än 1 år. Projektet iCope inriktar sig mot patienter, industri, universitet, studenter, regioner och särskilt mot forskare. Projektet vill främja forskning och tillgången till samlad forskningsexpertis och forskningsanläggningar, inklusive gemensamma biobanker och databaser. Detta genom gränsregionalt samarbete. Förhoppningen är att upptaget av expertis, forskningstalanger och patientantal blir större genom projektet och att en av de största multidisciplinära forskningsmiljöerna i Europa kan skapas. Patienter ska därmed få tillgång till den senaste forskningen och gagn av de nyaste kunskaperna och modernaste behandlingarna. Med fler patienter ökar intresset hos industrin och förhoppningen är att därmed stärka samarbetet. Resultaten av forskningen ska på så sätt omsättas i utveckling av ny teknik och behandlingsmetoder. Även patientgruppens situation på sjukhus, i skola och hemmet står i fokus i projektet.
