Our view is that connecting with emergent digital tech and changing digital literacies is key to re-energising our towns, villages and communities. Stratus will use disruptive VR technologies to enable exploration of the Past, Present and Future, maximising societal benefits from natural and cultural heritage. In Stratus we will use VR to enhance the visitor experience, help direct the flows of visitors and inform policy. We will push the limits of VR today with the goal of enabling its potential to be realised in the future. We will develop VR solutions that enhance and integrate exploration of cultural and natural heritage. This will bring together real-world media (aerial, 360, 3D and stereoscopic) with virtual world media enabling new perspectives on natural and cultural heritage to enrich onsite experiences and inform digital narratives. We will design collaborative heritage VR where multiple users communicate within the same Virtual Environment, mixing onsite and offsite participants and using VR to connect together cultural and natural heritage sites both enhancing experience and managing flows of visitors (Wild Atlantic Way). We will use a practice based approach developing solutions within use cases in doing so we will push the limits of VR. We will hold partner meetings in Iceland, Scotland and Ireland. We will hold workshops in Ireland and Norway. Narrative will connect with history, science and myth, we will address climate change and threats to heritage and address how VR can enrich both informal and formal educational scenarios. We will make it easy for domain specialists to contribute to VR solutions by developing toolkits as well as encouraging technology transfer and spread as transnational knowledge exchange. Our target audiences will include end user visitors, community members, local and sector wide heritage organisations and policy makers.

Expected Results (EN): Preparedness of responsible authorities in remote, sparsely populated areas for environmental management in relation to climate change and impacts of new investments in exploitation of natural resources.

Expected Outputs (EN):

The project will develop understanding of virtual reality, frameworks which support the creation of VR solutions and VR solutions which result in an improved innovation environment in peripheral areas, and more outward-looking attitudes towards innovation. Development and transfer of best-practice models and solutions for “up skilling” local authorities and community groups, focusing on skills and competences like negotiation skills, change management skills, expertise on climate change impacts, environmental impacts, social impacts, and economic impacts. We will develop a Virtual Reality framework which will enable visualisation of alternative outcomes the effect of policy decisions which address climate change. This will provide a new way of assessing the environment and help local authorities manage the effects of climate change. We will develop and transfer concepts and models utilising VR for the protection, promotion and development of natural and cultural heritage. This will provide an interpretation of sustainable environmental management, adding powerful immersive visualisation. We will develop the use of VR technologies to enhance the visitor experience developing, through connecting VR with social media we will create models for the promotion of natural and cultural heritage sites through peer to peer promotion. Partners include public sector organisations, knowledge partners SMEs, private organisations and representative bodies, private-public partnerships, social enterprises, and third sector organisations. We will engage with local and regional communities, local businesses, local employees and visitors in developing our models and solutions this will build capacity within communities in remote and sparsely populated areas. Through working in the digital domain, we will enhance the ability of remote communities to articulate their heritage both natural and cultural. Through working with VR, we will enhance the relatively low economic diversity, improving the profile of tourism and heritage sectors and reducing reliance on relatively few economic sectors, such as fishery or forestry. We will focus on three objectves: 1) Developing capacity for using VR solutions to enhance the onsite visitor experience for combined natural and cultural heritage. 2) Connecting natural heritage sites through making VR representations of trails available at individual sites, encouraging further engagement and managing the flows of visitors. 3) Developing cooperative VR solutions which enable sharing of natural and cultural heritage experience between real world visitors, virtual visitors and domain experts.
