Description (EN):

INTESA project establishes a network among the National Maritime Administrations of Italy and Croatia and main port authorities of the Adriatic sea (Venice, Trieste, Ravenna, Ancona, Bari, Rijeka, Ploce and Split) with the scope of harmonizing and optimizing the procedures of the complete maritime transport process in order to make port and maritime transport system more efficient and safe. The project aims at optimizing the port procedure from unload of the cargo from the ship to the forward by train or truck, at optimizing the procedure to enter and exit from the port; at increasing port performances in bad weather conditions safeguarding safety and security requirements; at designing and implementing integrated ICT tool for the management and broadcast of the information on Maritime Safety to all ships en-route in the Adriatic Sea. Information added on 2020-05-18, regarding the mitigation of the effects of COVID-19 (the coronavirus pandemic that started in 2019) (English language only): INTESA tackles the lack of integration of the IT and HR on monitoring maritime traffic in the Adriatic Sea. Covid-19 could bring supply chains to disruption and having an integrated monitoring system can positively impact both on security and safety tasks , as well as forecasting and planning mitigation measures.

Achievements (EN):

As of today the Adriatic ports are equipped with the most modern technologies to optimise port procedures for the ship cycle and port entry & exit, safeguarding safety requirements and laying the foundations for the integration and transmission of maritime safety information in the Adriatic. This result is the fruit of the cooperation between the Italian and Croatian National Maritime Authorities and the main Port Authorities of the Adriatic (Venice, Trieste, Ravenna, Ancona, Bari, Rijeka Ploce and Split), which have been working together for more than three years to optimise the procedures of the entire maritime transport process, in order to make the port and maritime transport system more efficient and safer. INTESA has enabled the Italian and Croatian administrations and some port authorities of the two countries to pursue the objective of greater safety in maritime operations and improved nautical accessibility, as well as an increase in efficiency in the performance of operations themselves. This was also made possible thanks to the implementation of high-tech equipment and high-level training activities for pilots, among them: Tide gauges digital platforms that integrate real-time data on marine weather conditions and navigation aids. The so-called ATONs, virtual buoys that signal the best navigation routes to pilots and captains. Pilot Portable Units and other navigation aid that integrate the Automatic Identification System (AIS) data of ships. Very high-precision cartography. In order to be truly competitive, the ports of the future must be able to face challenges and critical issues with a different point of view that places innovation and the use of technology and data at the heart of their strategy. Information & Data sharing through digital infrastructures is decisive for better planning port operations, guaranteeing higher levels of safety, nautical accessibility and logistical efficiency: the core objectives of the INTESA Project.

Expected Outputs (EN):

Benefits will reach port –users, private and public, improving safety, security and resilience at Adriatic level (e.g. warning messages communicated and shared on both shores in real-time; better managed IT data will avoid duplication and lead to more harmonized and competitive logistics port procedures, in all legs of the logistic chain, deep-sea, seaside and landside). To achieve this results, transferability is key both on deployment of Equipment/Pilot applications and also with integrated ICT software for AIS Application-Specific Messages (ASMs) on Maritime Safety Information on IT and HR cross border level, de facto covering the Adriatic Sea (disruptive transferable innovation).
