Most schools in the North Sea Region were built in more careless times, they have a high and forever more costly energy consumption that is not in line with today’s CO2 reduction emission policies. 2IMPREZS will stimulate change in the current situation by fostering both behavioural and technical efficient energy saving measures in existing schools, reducing energy consumption and thus reducing CO2 emissions. For the first time, this project will tackle the whole spectrum of energy efficiency measures: the behavioural, the technical and the financial approaches instead of focusing on one specific field.Based on active participation and initiatives of school stakeholders (teachers, students, management), as well as on the project partners’ experiences, 2IMPREZS will create a joint energy saving programme through Energy Challenges in schools and an innovative decision making model, developed, tested and validated incorporating cost-effective educational, technical and financial measures.By reaching schools and experts throughout the NSR, 2IMPREZS will be able to collect and share experiences but also develop an energy saving programme compiling measures that are proved efficient in various settings.The implementation of the project comprehensive transnational strategy will aim to reach 30% energy savings in 141 schools in the North Sea Region representing an emission reduction of 7320 tonnes of CO2 and transform at least 4 schools into nearly zero-energy buildings.

Achievements (EN):

Within the extended 2IMPREZS project, the transnational partnership (now expanded into a new 2IMPREZS region, Essex) has focused on the final stages of development and delivery of content for the Digital 2IMPREZS Energy Challenges Programme, which was communicated and disseminated at the EU-level. The digital tools developed within the 18-month project extension of 2IMPREZS are open-source and available for use by any interested teachers and pupils well beyond the project end with the goal of increasing capacity and ensuring future scalability of the 2IMPREZS Energy Challenges. All partners have contributed to the design, development and testing of the 2IMPREZS digital tools listed above: 1. VR Glasses - The VR game developed for the 2IMPREZS VR glasses take children on a virtual tour of a Dutch school where they can learn about sustainability, energy, and technology in a fun and challenging game format. 2. Serious Game - This game challenges children to explore ways to improve their environment and reduce CO2 emissions and is compatible with mobile phones, tablets, and desktops. 3. Digital Manual - An innovative manual that explains the Energy Challenges campaign to teachers and students. Available in English, Dutch, German and Slovenian, the 2IMPREZS Digital Blueprint – as one example of the resources made available through 2IMPREZS – is an e-manual that serves as a ‘blueprint’ or guide for implementing the digital Energy Challenges in schools across the North Sea Region and beyond. To hear all about the five-year journey of the international project consortium, 35 teachers, local politicians and other key stakeholders attended the 2IMPREZS Final Conference, held on 7th June 2023 at the European Parliament Building in Brussels. A highlight of the final conference was the insightful and inspiring presentation by four outstanding “Energizers” themselves – pupils involved in the 2IMPREZS Energy Challenges programme – who travelled to Brussels from the Sjabi school in Puurs, Belgium to demonstrate their findings and results. In addition, presented at the final conference was the full suite of 2IMPREZS digital tools and how to utilise them to replicate the 2IMPREZS Energy Challenges across the North Sea Region. Within the extended 2IMPREZS 4.0 project, the partnership also updated the Key Performance Indicator Spreadsheet (KPI) to collect energy data from schools, which has been uploaded onto the 2IMPREZS 4.0 Digital Manual to allow schools beyond the project to monitor their own energy savings, and even upload their savings onto the 2IMPREZS Interactive Fact Sheets digital platform beyond the project end. Throughout the lifetime of the project, the success of 2IMPREZS was recognised as the project became a participant, finalist or winner in numerous EU-level competitions: Participant in the EU Sustainable Energy Awards competition Participant in REGIOSTARS 2021 Winner of the Interreg Project Slam 2019 North Sea Region Video Contest 2019 and 2020 (People in Focus) Winner of the North Sea Region photo contest 2021 1 of 30 finalists in the Horizon European Social Innovation awards Selected as an exemplar project in different categories (advancing green energy and promoting energy efficiency) in the Interreg programme Selected to present at 'Scoop the Impact 2022' as a part of the North Sea conference In total, 80,896 pupils have joined the Energy Challenges Programme so far, thanks to 2IMPREZS. The project has allowed the brilliant Dutch concept of making energy-saving at schools fun to expand across regions and cultures, inspiring young people to become "agents of change" in their decarbonisation efforts - now and in generations to come.
