Description (EN):

The Mediterranean sea is one of the world's biodiversity hotspots but is also one of the most polluted seas worldwide. Marine litter is a global threat for living marine organisms. Over 260 species have so far been reported to ingest or become entangled in debris such as plastic, monofilament line, rubber and aluminium foil The problem particularly affects fishes, cetaceans and marine turtles, animals in whose digestive tracts commonly appear accidentally-swallowed micro and macro plastic debris. The Marine Strategy Framework Directive considers marine litter as one of the most concerning causes of pollution of the sea and states that the Good Environmental State is reached when “properties and quantities of marine litter do not cause harm to the coastal and marine environment”. Similar consideration has been done by the Mediterranean Countries that adopted the Barcelona Convention in which ensuring that marine litter does not affect biodiversity and ecosystem services has been incorporated as a main ecological objective. Although many Mediterranean organisations are working on this issue, there is not any widely-accepted protocols to assess pollution by marine litter. For this reasons, the project proposes to network representative MPAs, scientific organizations and environmental NGOs for developing, testing and delivering efficient, easy to apply and cost-effective protocols to monitor and manage litter impact on biodiversity.

La mer Méditerranée est l'un des points chauds de la biodiversité mondiale, mais aussi l'une des mers les plus polluées. Les déchets marins sont une menace pour les organismes qui y vivent. Plus de 260 espèces sont connues pour ingérer ou s’empêtrer dans des débris tels que des plastiques, du caoutchouc, du papier d'aluminium… Ce problème affecte les poissons, les cétacés et les tortues, qui avalent accidentellement des débris, qui sont couramment observés dans leurs appareils digestifs. La MSFD considère les déchets marins comme l'une des causes principales de la pollution de la mer et stipule que «le bon état» de cet environnement est atteint lorsque "les […] déchets marins ne provoquent pas de dommages à l'environnement marin et côtier". Cette même logique a conduit les pays méditerranéens à adopter la Convention de Barcelone dans laquelle un objectif principal est que les déchets marins n’affectent pas les services écosystémiques et la biodiversité. Bien que de nombreuses organisations méditerranéennes travaillent sur cette question, il n'y a pas de protocoles standards largement acceptés pour évaluer la pollution par les déchets marins. Pour ces raisons, le projet propose d’organiser un réseau d’Aires Marines Protégées, d’organisations scientifiques et d’ONG environnementales pour développer, tester et délivrer des protocoles efficaces, faciles à appliquer, et économiquement pertinents pour évaluer, surveiller et gérer l'impact des déchets marins sur la biodiversité.

Achievements (EN):

WP1 ManagementRegarding the coordination and managerial activities (WP1), as a Project Leader, the Parco delle 5 Terre coordinated and submitted the 2nd PR and Payment Claim to JS through the Synergy system on April 2018 and it was implemented the 3rd SC meeting on May 9th, 10th and 11th 2018 in Valencia.The collaboration of the partners in the managing activity is rather good, although also in occasion of the submission of the current 3rd Progress Report, the communication and the transferring of documents are often in delay and containing several errors.The communication with PP Ecocean is often not smooth and time-boundet and the PP missed the SC Meeting the technical and Scientific meeting held in Valencia (participation via Skype). The PP missed also the 2nd SC and 3rd TS meetings in Villasimius on September 2017. WP2 CommunicationIt has been established a Communication Working Group in order to well prepare the WP5 transferring activities in 2019.During this period social and web site activities went on, with news published in the project web page, and posting on Facebook.Finally, the project took part to all the initiatives carried-on by the Horizontal Project PANACEA.WP3 StudyingCompletion of the Del. 3. 3.2 Shared monitoring protocol and uploading of it on Synergie system. This WP ended on January 31st.Implementation of the 4th Technical and scientific meeting on May 9th, 10th and 11th 2018 in Valencia.WP4 TestingWithin the period February June, all partner started the testing of the protocols in the areas of project intervention, through the planning and implementation of the surveys on macrolitter in pilot large scale areas, macrolitter in pilot MPAs, microlitter in pilot large areas and MPAs by photo aerial missions and analysis using litter ingestion rates by fishes actively caught on the fishes (mainly Boops-boops) and turtles (mainly Caretta-Caretta).In parallel the project has been spread and shared through the scientific community and general public, by the participation of its partners to international conferences and events in matter of sea litter in USA.
