Description (EN):

The overall objective of the project is to improve the ability of the Black Sea Basin national and coastal authorities to respond timely and effectively to water pollution and strengthen the joint knowledge and information base needed among partners, target groups and final beneficiaries on addressing the common challenges of water pollution in BS Basin marine and river environment.

Achievements (EN):

1. Knowledge and experiences exchange among partner institutions increased by: - Studies, researches and analysis individual/commonly undertaken: Technical studies carried out: * Up to date report on main pollutants in underground and surface waters in the area of Lower Danube, Lower Prut and Dniester. Potential quantification of relationships of pollution in surface and underground water. * Report on development of specially modified diatomite based sorbents for defluorination of drinking water from underground sources and trial application of modified diatomite for the oil pollution removal. * Report on laser induced fluorescence properties and spectral features of natural waters and pilot application of the developed fiber optic laser fluorometer instrument for the organic pollutants detection and water quality monitoring and characterization of the phytoplankton community status in aquatic environment. * Report on structural and functional characteristics, ecological and biological assessment of the state of the coastal ichthyocenes along the Black Sea shoreline of the Crimea Peninsula and adjacent water areas of the Kerch Strait that is a specific zone of transit and exchange between ecosystems of the Black and Azov Seas and elaborated measures for preservation of specially protected regional nature reserves in ecosystems. * Report on current fauna and flora state of valley rivers of the Black Sea east coast of Turkey (Caglayan, Fırtına and Ikızdere and others), the area for important endemic species populations, pollution mapping in river systems most affected by the agricultural and human activities for assessment of anthropogenic impact. * An oil spill dispersion forecasting system based on wind, wave and ocean circulation forecasting models. An algorithm which comprises the use of genetic algorithms and oil spill simulation, in terms of a decision support system, for optimizing the performance of oil slick combating stations –networks. • Documentation on best practices/state-of-art in similar areas in EU. • Data/information on surface waters monitoring provided. • Providing the assessments and data analysis. - A Manual for the prompt use of the oil spill dispersion forecasting tool by competent European, national and local authorities, as well as by scientific community and private entities provided by Aristotel University partner plus a pilot applications of the oil spill dispersion forecasting system and an algorithm for its optimizing in Thessaloniki Termaikos Gulf, Greece. 2. Project's stakeholders (team members & target groups) level of awareness and technical/scientific expertise increased by: • 10 experts' seminars organized;. • 6 training courses developed; • 1 study visits organized. • 1 international conference organized; - 7 Workshops organized in partner countries; - 1 Round table and 3 Technical/ study visits organized. 3. Action's visibility and EU funding insured thorugh: • Development of the Project Communication and Visibility Plans and Project Dissemination Plan. • Development of the project website functionality and effectiveness http://www.ddni.ro/bsbneteco; • Creation and wide dissemination of the project’s scientific articles, brochures, posters, press releases and e-newsletters on national and BS level. • Organisation of the workshops, seminars, study visits and conferences. Attendance at conferences and dissemination of the presented materials. • Creation of Project Logo and Official Templates. • Organization and participation in the Project closing conference. - Posters created: 7 tupes; Posters disseminated: 220; - Scientific articles published: 19 - Publications in conference proceedings: 28 - CDs printed : 220; CDs disseminated : 220; - Flyers/leaflets created: 6; Flyers disseminated: 775 - Broshures created: 7; Brochures disseminated: 885 - Press releases created: 10; Press releases disseminated: 500 - E-newsletters: 6 - Media appearance: 12 - 1 Manual on oil spill modelling tool (in English language), disseminated 50 copies; - 1 IEG Monograph “Geoecological status of surface and underground waters in the Black Sea basin (within the Republic of Moldova)”. Report on structural and functional characteristics, ecological and biological assessment of migratory fishes along the Black Sea shoreline in front of Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve and upstream to the Danube river. - Report on current fauna and flora state of valley rivers of the Black Sea east coast of Turkey (Caglayan, Fırtına and Ikızdere and others), the area for important endemic species populations, pollution mapping in river systems most affected by the agricultural and human activities for assessment of anthropogenic impact. - An oil spill dispersion forecasting system based on wind, wave and ocean circulation forecasting models. An algorithm which comprises the use of genetic algorithms and oil spill simulation, in terms of a decision support system, for optimising the performance of oil slick combating stations –networks. - Pilot applications of the oil spill dispersion forecasting system and of the algorithm for its optimising. PS - due to Russian anexation of ex Autonomus Republic of Crimea (2014), activities assigned to the Ukrainian partner Kerch State Marine Technological University (KSMTU) had to be ceased with no possibility to be taken over by other entity in the expected area of implementation (Kerch Strait as connection corridor of Black Sea to Azov Sea).
