Project in brief Lighthouses, semaphores and sea marks constitute a unique cultural heritage, which highlights the history of Mediterranean coastal areas. Nevertheless, these resources are not yet enhanced for territorial development purposes and are often in a poor state of conservation or simply abandoned. The heritage related to maritime navigation seem to suffer from a lack of connection with the respective territory where it is located: as a consequence, this heritage is ignored by institutions and local population. Despite this situation, some governments have recently started to better protect maritime navigation heritage, including lighthouses, semaphores and sea marks. In order to continue the efforts exerted at national level, MED-PHARES project aims to develop a model applicable to all territories of the Mediterranean area allowing to showcase the tangible and intangible heritage of coastal sites with navigation marks and signs. The project will promote the integration of this heritage in strategies and policies associated with integrated coastal zone management. Specific objective To create a new model for the renovation and management of the heritage constituted by lighthouses, semaphores and sea marks in order to promote these resources as drivers for the development of sustainable tourism

Expected Results (EN):

• Increased knowledge of the legal framework and specific features (environment, history, architecture) of lighthouses, semaphores and maritime buildings of the cooperation area • Designed cross-border methodology for a better management of coastal sites with buildings related to maritime navigation • At least 7 management and development plans of pilot sites defined and implemented (pilot sites located in Corsica, Sardinia, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, South Lebanon and Tunisia) • Awareness of population, tourists and other target groups raised about the importance of the tangible and intangible heritage found in coastal areas • Skills of local officials strengthened as regard to integrated management of maritime navigation heritage
