Description (EN):

Italy, Slovenia, Germany, Poland, Croatia, Czech Republic and Hungary within 3-year project “FORGET HERITAGE” will reply to the question: How to improve capacities of the public and private sector for the sustainable use of cultural heritage and resources in Central Europe? Most cities are characterized by the presence of unused historical buildings (former factories, hospitals, schools, barracks) that have marked the history of the local community. Now, in a state of neglect, their historical memory is being forgotten and they have a negative impact on the surrounding areas by turning into "urban voids". "New ideas need old buildings" (Jane Jacobs): the challenge jointly tackled by the project partners is to find an innovative and sustainable solution for the protection and valorisation of the Central Europe cultural heritage, increasing its economic value. The main project objective is to promote cooperation among partners’ cities in order to identify innovative, replicable and sustainable Private Public Cooperation management models of the abandoned historical sites (recognised as cultural heritage) by valorising them through setting up cultural and creative companies. The consortium aims to provide recommendations for other cities how to enhance the hidden potential of the cultural heritage to influence the quality of life of the citizens and cultural creative industries operators who will have new working opportunities and boost their managerial skills. Further results are: Management Manual, Transnational Training Model and within Pilot Actions Ex-Ante Assessment and Ex-Post Evaluation. The project will also develop tools to indicate buildings in underutilised areas ideal for cultural and creative use. Transnational cooperation allows to find novel solutions. Collective results to influence national policies, develop human resources and strengthen local managerial systems are the added value of this collaboration. Achievements (EN):

THE FACTS: The Forget Heritage project was a three year long project, which started on 01.06.2016. The main objective of Forget Heritage was promoting cooperation between central European cities in order to identify innovative, replicable and sustainable Public Private Cooperation management models of the historical sites by valorising them through setting up Cultural and Creative Industries. Most cities are characterized by the presence of unused historical buildings, such as former factories, hospitals, schools, barracks, that have marked the history of the local community. Now, in a state of neglect, their historical memory is being forgotten and they have a negative impact on the surrounding areas by turning into "urban voids”. THE AIMS: The objective of Forget Heritage was to promote cooperation among participating cities in order to identify innovative replicablend sustainable private public cooperation management models of the abandoned historical sites - recognised as cultural heritage. The partnership aimed to provide recommendations for other cities on how to enhance the hidden potential of the cultural heritage to influence the quality of life of the citizens and cultural creative industry operators who could have new working opportunities and boost their managerial skills. Further results are: a management manual, transnational training model and - in view of pilot actions an ex-ante assessment and ex-post evaluation happened. The project also developed tools to indicate buildings in underutilised areas ideal for cultural and creative use. Transnational cooperation allowed to find novel solutions. Collective results to influence national policies, develop human resources and strengthen local managerial systems were the added values of this collaboration.

Expected Results (EN): R 3.2 Status of capacities of the public and private sector for the sustainable use of cultural heritage and resources achieved through transnational cooperation.

Expected Outputs (EN):

The project will include 3 levels of cooperation for long-term socio-economic development of the partners’ regions in order to improve capacities of public and private sector for the sustainable use of cultural heritage and resources: 1) at the governance level by getting the political endorsement for the project outputs and raising awareness of the potential hidden in empty historical buildings as well as negative impact they may have on the surrounding area if not enhanced. In particular, the project will provide policy makers with the tools for the management of these spaces. 2) the adopted methodologies will take into account programmed civil participation by direct involvement of the citizens and creative communities as users of the selected buildings in joint decision making process that will strengthen a long-term support for implemented policies, investments or proposed ideas which are ineffective without wide public acknowledgement. Public participation will be an important part of gaining information and receiving feedback how to improve these facilities in order to create economic and cultural opportunities. 3) the CCI who will manage the facilities will be envolved by strengthening their potential and capacity building. Reaching these objectives will imply some side effects such as reduction of the land use and the tackle of the loss of value due to the damage caused by lack of maintenance that can have a negative impact on the value of surrounding properties.
