Description (EN):

The road bridge over the Rhine between Gambsheim and Rheinau was built in the early 1970s, without taking environmentally friendly modes of transport into consideration. Today, intense car and heavy goods vehicle traffic over the bridge means it is at maximum capacity. Thanks to this project, a crossing will be constructed exclusively for pedestrians and cyclists. It will be incorporated into the network of cycle paths, creating a link between the two banks of the Rhine that can be used in total safety.

Die Straßenbrücke über den Rhein bei Gambsheim-Rheinau wurde Anfang der 1970er-Jahre gebaut, ohne Berücksichtigung einer sanftern Mobilität. Die Kapazitätsgrenze dieser Straßenbrücke wird heutzutage durch den intensiven Fahrzeugverkehr erreicht. Dank diesem Projekt soll in Höhe eine verbesserte Möglichkeit zur Überquerung des Rheins für Radfahrer und Fußgänger und eine Verbindung der Radwegenetze geschaffen werden.

Le pont-route sur le Rhin entre Gambsheim et Rheinau a été construit au début des années 70, sans aménagement prévu pour les modes de déplacements doux. Les capacités de ce pont routier sont aujourd'hui saturées par un intense trafic d'automobiles et de poids lourds. Grâce à ce projet, une passerelle uniquement dédiée aux piétons et cyclistes va être réalisée. Elle s'intégrera dans le réseau des pistes cyclables et permettra de relier en toute sécurité les deux rives du Rhin.

Achievements (EN):

Previously, the road bridge between Gambsheim in France and Rheinau in Germany was not very attractive for pedestrians and cyclists. Due to the lack of a secured footpath or cycle path, residents and visitors often took their cars to get to the other side of the border. Today, the crossing, built as part of the PK309 project, is reserved for pedestrian and cyclist use only. This safe connection between the two banks of the Rhine promotes gentle mobility in this section of the Rhine. The structure, which is 63 meters long in total, is also one of the largest aluminum walkways in Europe. The last section of this secured Rhine crossing was used in June 2019. The opening took place as part of a large cross-border festival. On this occasion, the partnership between the two municipalities of Gambsheim and Rheinau was officially sealed. The project, which is supported by the Passage 309 association, also promotes eco-tourism at the Gambsheim-Rheinau barrage, which benefits above all from one of the largest fish ladders in Europe. Not only the local population, local clubs, school facilities and cross-border commuters benefit from this new cross-border connection, but also hikers, walkers and cyclists from the near and far surroundings.

Früher war die Straßenbrücke zwischen Gambsheim in Frankeich und Rheinau in Deutschland für Fußgänger und Radfahrer kaum attraktiv. Wegen des fehlenden gesicherten Fuß- bzw. Radwegs nahmen Bewohner und Besucher häufig das Auto, um auf die andere Seite der Grenze zu gelangen. Heute ist der im Rahmen des Projekts PK309 gebaute Übergang ausschließlich der Nutzung durch Fußgänger und Radfahrer vorbehalten. Diese sichere Verbindung zwischen den beiden Rheinufern fördert die sanfte Mobilität in diesem Rheinabschnitt. Das insgesamt 63 Meter lange Bauwerk ist gleichzeitig einer der größten Aluminiumstege in Europa. Das letzte Teilstück dieses gesicherten Rheinübergangs wurde im Juni 2019 eingesetzt. Die Eröffnung fand im Rahmen eines großen grenzüberschreitenden Festes statt. Bei dieser Gelegenheit wurde auch die Partnerschaft der beiden Gemeinden Gambsheim und Rheinau offiziell besiegelt. Das vom Verein Passage 309 getragene Projekt fördert darüber hinaus auch den Ökotourismus an der Staustufe Gambsheim-Rheinau, der vor allem auch von einer der größten Fischtreppen in Europa profitiert. Von dieser neuen grenzüberschreitenden Verbindung profitieren daher nicht nur die örtliche Bevölkerung, lokale Vereine, schulische Einrichtungen und Grenzgänger, sondern auch Wanderer, Spaziergänger und Radtouristen aus dem nahen und fernen Umland.
