Description (EN):

Electric mobility has reached the maritime sector. Both ships (e.g. excursion boats) & leisure boats (e.g. motorboats or yachts) with electric engines become more popular. Market potentials (e.g. in ecologically sensitive & motorboat restricted waters) inside and outside the SB area are increasingly recognised in the industry. The South Baltic area has strong boat & ship building tradition & industry: - There are larger boat & ship builders (some of international significance) & their suppliers. They are often cooperating in cross-border supply chains (e.g. suppliers in PL produce hulls for HanseYachts in Greifswald / DE). - There are SMEs specialised e.g. in small ships, excursion ships & leisure boats. Some of them take up traditional regional boat designs tailored to the typical shallow waters of the lagoons (e.g. “Kurenkahn” / LT, “Zeesenboot” / DE). - The region’s research institutes have R&D capacities in boat&ship design (e.g. universities in Rostock, Szczecin, Gdańsk, Klaipeda; BTH) that can help to advance the current boat & ship designs. It can be observed that the South Baltic ship & boat building industry has started to produce electric boats & ships (e.g. electric excursion boats “FährBär” of BVG / FRS built by Formstaal in Stralsund / DE) – and that also the interest in the tourism sector increased (e.g. electric boat rental on Achterwasser / DE). However, a wider adaption to electric maritime mobility is still to be made. Especially the combination of regional ship & boat building competences (small ships, boats for shallow waters) with electric engines may create innovative and green maritime products with good market prospects – both within the SB area and beyond. It provides opportunities for new designs & applications & new markets. Seed funding is needed to do a baseline analysis on existing market actors (boatbuilders, boat-and ship repair services, suppliers, shipbuilders) & to explore their needs in developing the electric boats segment.

Expected Results (EN): Utilizing the innovation of electric drive systems for boats&ships for *entering new markets; *developing pilots for new maritime e-mobility applications & *transferring solutions for retrofitting boats&ships for the benefit of maritime sector SMEs.

Expected Outputs (EN):

The main output of the Seed Money will be project concept paper of the future project in which the main goal will ELMAR seeks to support the ship & boat building sector in the South Baltic area in adapting to electric maritime mobility, to create related products & better utilize the market potentials for electric boats & ships within the region at the same time. This shall be achieved in the following way: - Market exploration & market research: Market analysis & study trips will show potentials for e-boats & e-ships in- and outside the South Baltic area. Thus, companies from South Baltic boat & ship building sector will get orientation & inspirations for developing & marketing electric maritime mobility products. - Inducing innovative ship & boat designs adapted to electric engines: R&D institutions & boat builders across the South Baltic area are brought together to develop new vessel designs that use innovation potentials related to electric engines in a more far-reaching way. This may include creating prototypes that base on traditional boat & ship designs from the region (e.g. “Kurenkahn”). Thus, boat & ship builders get concrete inspirations for innovative designs of e-ships & e-boats. - Cross-border cluster building, networking & business matchmaking for electric maritime mobility: Related events & networks (a) connect boat & ship building companies with related R&D institutions across the SB area (b) create cross-border supply chains within the SB area for development & construction of e-ships & e-boats (c) connect the area´s boat & ship builders with essential buyers & suppliers outside the region (e.g. engine & battery producers). - Joint market development & marketing: With help of business support organisations, innovative electric maritime mobility products & businesses from the South Baltic area are promoted at relevant boating fairs. Info events & exchange workshops make commercial users in the South Baltic area (e.g. boat rental companies, excursion shipping companies etc.) aware of advantages & availability of electric boats & ships for their purposes.
