Cancer is one of the most threatening diseases of this century, causing eight million deaths worldwide each year. Cancer's complexity means the disease can only be treated through innovation and translating knowledge into new medication. Under the direction of the University of Maastricht, the University of Antwerp, Basic Pharma Technologies, MosaMedix and VIB are seeking to meet the specific challenges of cancer. At Euregional PACT, a virtual research laboratory set up through the previous Interreg programme, a number of basic medical technologies have already been developed at academic level. One of those technologies is the Anx-A5-based platform for Target Drug Delivery. It involves targeted administration of medicines via electrical or hypothermic stimulation, which exerts stress on the cells. Advantages of this technique are the efficient, targeted coupling of toxic pharmaceutical quantities, but on the basis of reduced doses so that general side-effects remain limited and the patient's quality of life is maintained. The aim is to further expand this technology within SKiN-HUID into a therapy, through preclinical and clinical validation. A stimulation device with applicator will be developed that is to be used for preclinical validation of the treatment. The Annexine A5-ETA-based medicine is also being further developed to enable targeted, efficient administration by means of the device and the applicator.

The complexity of cancer means that this disease can only be successfully treated by innovation and translation of knowledge into new medicines. Under the leadership of Maastricht University (UM), University of Antwerp (UA), Basic Pharma Technologies, MosaMedix and VIB strive to respond to the specific challenges of skin cancer. Euregional PACT, a virtual research laboratory created through the previous Interreg programme, has already developed a number of basic medical technologies at the academic level. One of these technologies is the Annexine-A5-based platform for Target Drug Delivery. It involves a targeted administration of medications via electrical or hyperthermal stimulation that puts stress on the cells. Benefits of this technique are the efficient and targeted coupling of toxic pharmaceutical amounts, but based on a reduced dose so that overall side effects are limited and the quality of life of the patient is maintained. The intention is to further expand this technology within “Skin-HUID” into a therapy through preclinical and clinical validation. A stimulation device with applicator will be developed that will be used for preclinical validation of the treatment. The consortium has now developed the prototype of the simulation device and placed it with the VIB and the UA. Based on the results of the first tests, the prototype was further optimised for pre-clinical validation. In parallel with preclinical developments, the preparation process of the medicinal product annexin A5-ETA is made suitable for production according to the guidelines of the European Medicines Agency (EMA). This is essential for clinical validation. Production according to these guidelines requires a special facility, the Clean Room. Basic Pharma has started the construction of a Clean Room with the production infrastructure with which the drug will be produced. The Clean Room facility was completed in the 3 rd quarter of 2018 and tested by an independent party and approved. The fermentor will be delivered in Q2 2019. Basic Pharma’s internal QA department has approved the Cleanroom with GMP production facility.

Kanker is één van de meeste bedreigende ziektes van deze eeuw met jaarlijks wereldwijd 8 miljoen doden. De complexiteit van kanker maakt dat deze ziekte enkel succesvol behandeld kan worden door innovatie en vertaling van kennis naar nieuwe geneesmiddelen. Onder leiding van Universiteit Maastricht (UM) streven Universiteit Antwerpen (UA), Basic Pharma Technologies, MosaMedix en VIB ernaar een antwoord te bieden op de specifieke uitdagingen van huidkanker. Vanuit Euregional PACT, een virtueel onderzoekslaboratorium dat tot stand kwam via het vorige Interreg-programma, zijn reeds een aantal medische basistechnologieën op academisch niveau ontwikkeld. Eén van die technologieën is het Annexine-A5 gebaseerde platform voor Target Drug Delivery. Het omvat een gerichte toediening van medicijnen via elektrische of hyperthermische stimulatie die stress op de cellen zet. Voordelen van deze techniek zijn het efficiënt en doelgericht inkoppelen van toxische farmaceutische hoeveelheden, maar op basis van een verminderde dosis zodat algemene bijwerkingen beperkt blijven en de levenskwaliteit van de patiënt gehandhaafd blijft. De bedoeling is om deze technologie binnen ‘SKiN-HUID’ verder uit te spinnen tot een therapie via preklinische en klinische validatie. Er zal een stimulatietoestel met applicator ontwikkeld worden dat ingezet wordt voor een preklinische validatie van de behandeling. Het consortium heeft inmiddels het prototype van het simulatietoestel ontwikkeld en bij het VIB en de UA geplaatst. Aan de hand van de resultaten van de eerste testen is het prototype verder geoptimaliseerd voor de preklinische validatie. Parallel aan de preklinische ontwikkelingen wordt het bereidingsproces van het geneesmiddel annexine A5-ETA geschikt gemaakt voor de productie volgens de richtlijnen van het Europese Agentschap voor Medicijnen (EMA). Dit is essentieel voor de klinische validatie. Productie volgens deze richtlijnen vergt een speciale faciliteit, de Clean Room. Basic Pharma is gestart met de bouw van een Clean Room met de productieinfrastructuur waarmee het geneesmiddel geproduceerd zal worden. De Clean Room faciliteit is in het 3e kwartaal van 2018 gereed gekomen en getest door een onafhankelijke partij en goedgekeurd. De fermentor zal in het 2e kwartaal 2019 geleverd worden. De interne QA afdeling van Basic Pharma heeft de Cleanroom met GMP-productie faciliteit goedgekeurd.
