Within Interreg IV, Groene Grondstoffen (Green Raw Materials) experimented successfully with locally grown biomass, such as hemp grown for fibre and miscanthus grass. Bio-based materials still, however, have too many limitations and need to be further perfected through practical research. Only then will SMOs really be able to start working with these materials. Growing a Green Future is tackling this and introducing a wide range of new chains into the bio-based economy. Agrodome, Inagro and Millvision are working on a pilot bio-based holiday home in this project. Locally grown hemp, flax and miscanthus are used to produce the necessary building materials, such as building blocks, insulation material and finishing materials. Millvision is also further developing high-quality bio-based printing paper and packaging based on these three crops. De Rusthoeve is conducting further research into high-quality oils, such as hemp and camelina. Thanks to new insights, such vegetable oils are recognised as extremely healthy unsaturated fatty acids. These 'new' vegetable oils are evaluated on the basis of consistency, stability, flavour and scent to establish the recipes for food products for which they can be used as ingredients. Lastly, business cases are being made for crops that can act as natural biocides. Research is being conducted to establish whether miscanthus can be a true replacement for the well-known but harmful weedkiller, Round Up.

Within Interreg IV, ‘Green Raw Materials’ successfully experimented with locally grown biomass such as fibre hemp and miscanthus. However, bio-based materials still have too many limitations and need to be further perfected through practical research. Only then can SMEs really get to work with these materials. ‘Growing a green future’ took this further up and set up a wide range of new chains in the bio-based economy. Ten Flemish and Dutch organisations joined forces to broaden the possibilities of locally grown green raw materials. Bio-based materials that still have to be developed have been picked up through practical research within ‘Growing a green future’ and taken a step further in the process. Thanks to many meetings, the knowledge was shared with the business community and several entrepreneurs were able to work on new crops such as oil pumpkins, sweet potato, crops for building materials, textiles, local oils and marigolds. Existing crops such as hemp of fibre were also better valorised. The Agrodome, Inagro and Millvision foundation started working on a pilot biobased holiday home. An entrepreneur from North Beveland realised this unique holiday home and today serves as a source of inspiration for other entrepreneurs. The project was clearly at the forefront of this and was a pioneer for the sector as there were several initiatives on biobased construction. De Rusthoeve together with Delphy, Province of Flemish Brabant, ILVO and Karel de Grote University of Applied Sciences under further research into high-quality oils such as hemp, deder and pumpkin seeds. Such vegetable oils are considered to be very healthy unsaturated fatty acids thanks to new insights. Based on consistency, stability, taste and smell of these “new” vegetable oils, it was evaluated in which recipes of food products and cosmetic applications such as lip balm they can be an ingredient. Finally, business cases are made for crops that can act as natural biocide. For example, CradleCrops, Rusthoeve, Herent and Delphy have investigated whether Miscanthus can serve as a weed suppressant. In 2018, a trial was built in a plant in the municipality of North Beveland with miscanthus as a weed suppressant. In 2019, this trial was repeated and extended to Flanders. This is perspective and a recommendation was made available to municipalities. Innovation gardens were laid out in Herent en Beitem and also at Proefboerderij Rusthoeve. In addition, satellite innovation gardens have been created in the Breda region and the Peel region in the Netherlands. With the two new locations, the project was given the opportunity to reach even more, and especially unknown entrepreneurs, and to inspire them to develop chains. As a result, a network of innovation gardens was launched throughout the region. All results of Growing a Green Future can be found on the project website.

Achievements (NL):

Binnen Interreg IV werd in ‘Groene Grondstoffen’ succesvol geëxperimenteerd met lokaal geteelde biomassa zoals vezelhennep en miscanthus. Biogebaseerde materialen kennen echter nog teveel beperkingen en dienen verder geperfectioneerd te worden door middel van praktijkonderzoek. Pas dan kunnen MKB/KMO bedrijven echt aan de slag met deze materialen. ‘Growing a green future’ nam dit verder op en zette een brede waaier van nieuwe ketens op in de biogebaseerde economie. Tien Vlaamse en Nederlandse organisaties sloegen de handen in elkaar om de mogelijkheden van lokaal geteelde groene grondstoffen te verbreden. Biogebaseerde materialen waar nog veel aan ontwikkeld moest worden, zijn door middel van praktijkonderzoek binnen 'Growing a green future’ opgepakt en een stapje verder in het proces gebracht. Dankzij vele bijeenkomsten is de kennis gedeeld met het bedrijfsleven en konden meerdere ondernemers aan de slag gaan met nieuwe teelten zoals oliepompoenen, zoete aardappel, teelten voor bouwmaterialen, textiel, lokale oliën en goudsbloemen. Ook bestaande teelten zoals vezelhennep werden beter gevaloriseerd. De stichting Agrodome, Inagro en Millvision gingen aan de slag met een pilot biobased vakantiewoning. Een ondernemer uit Noord Beveland realiseerde deze unieke vakantiewoning en dient vandaag als inspiratiebron voor andere ondernemers. Het project liep hier duidelijk voorop en was baanbreker voor de sector aangezien er verschillende initiatieven volgden rondom biobased bouwen. De Rusthoeve zette samen met Delphy, Provincie Vlaams Brabant, ILVO en Karel de Grote Hogeschool haar schouders onder verder onderzoek naar hoogwaardige oliën zoals hennep, deder en pompoenpitten. Dergelijke plantaardige oliën worden dankzij nieuwe inzichten beschouwd als erg gezonde onverzadigde vetzuren. Op basis van consistentie, stabiliteit, smaak en geur van deze ‘nieuwe’ plantaardige oliën werd geëvalueerd in welke recepturen van voedingsproducten en cosmetische toepassingen zoals lippenbalsem ze een ingrediënt kunnen zijn. Als laatste zijn business cases gemaakt voor gewassen die als natuurlijke biocide kunnen fungeren. Zo is door CradleCrops, Rusthoeve, Herent en Delphy onderzocht of Miscanthus kan dienen als onkruidonderdrukker. Hiervoor is in 2018 een proef aangelegd in een plantsoen in de gemeente Noord Beveland met miscanthus als onkruidonderdrukker. In 2019 is deze proef herhaald en uitgebreid naar Vlaanderen. Dit is perspectiefvol en voor gemeenten werd een aanbeveling beschikbaar gesteld. Innovatietuinen werden aangelegd in Herent en Beitem en ook op Proefboerderij Rusthoeve. Daarnaast zijn er in de regio Breda en regio de Peel in Nederland satelliet innovatie tuinen aangelegd. Met de twee nieuwe locaties kreeg het project de mogelijkheid om nog meer, en vooral nog onbekende ondernemers te bereiken en te inspireren om ketens te ontwikkelen.
