In the Koepelvisie Delta Region 2030, bio-based economy has been selected as one of the three top clusters and as a driving force for innovation and specialisation in the Dutch-Flemish Delta Region. With the presence of a large agronomic and chemical sector, a favourable geographical position and collaboration between companies, knowledge and educational institutions and governments, this border region can assume a unique pioneering role. Opportunities for economic growth, job retention and expansion are under pressure, though, due to a shortage of technically qualified people. Both the competencies of the current workforce in the industry and educational programmes for tomorrow's professionals are still insufficient. Grenzeloos Biobased Onderwijs (Borderless Bio-based Education) wants education to be geared more closely to future developments and specific demands from the business community. To stimulate innovation in the bio-based economy, collaboration between sectors and educational disciplines is therefore essential. The Strategische Projectorganisatie Kempen (Kempen Strategic Project Organisation) (SPK), for example, will be analysing the necessary skills and competencies for the kind of current and future employees companies are looking for. This will help adjust and fill in the gaps in certain learning modules. Avans University of Applied Sciences is creating a knowledge network and digital platform for educational institutions, students and companies. In addition, there will be a pool of lecturers for bio-based courses, with actual lecturer exchanges. ROC West-Brabant will be responsible for the inventory of all training and practice facilities in the border region. A plan of action will then be compiled that is aimed at improving existing facilities for algae growing, insects and sugar and bio refining. A shared facility structure is being set up in which both students and professionals can make use of each other's facilities.

Met de aanwezigheid van een grote agro- en chemische sector, een gunstige geografische ligging en de samenwerking tussen bedrijven, kennis- en onderwijsinstellingen en overheden kan de grensregio een unieke voortrekkersrol op zich nemen. Kansen op economische groei, behoud en uitbreiding van werkgelegenheid staan echter onder druk door een tekort aan technisch geschoolde mensen. Zowel de competenties van huidige werknemers in de industrie als onderwijsprogramma’s voor de professionals van morgen schieten nog te kort. Er is een 5-tal domeinen geïdentificeerd waar de Biobased Economy een belangrijke impact zal hebben: de land- & tuinbouw, de non-food, de chemie/biotechnologie, materialen en technologie/cleantech. Veertien Vlaamse en (zuid-)Nederlandse onderwijs- en kennispartners en belangenbehartigers van de biobased sector hebben gezamenlijk gewerkt aan de kansen en uitdagingen die de biobased economy de grensregio biedt. Het resultaat van deze samenwerking heeft geleid tot meer dan 45 biobased lesmodules, nieuwe biobased trainings- en oefenfaciliteiten bij onderwijsinstellingen, grensoverschrijdende onderwijsprogramma's, uitwisseling van docenten en studenten en een digitaal kennisplatform, waar onder meer al het biobased lesmateriaal kan worden gedownload. Highlights De basis voor dit eindresultaat is aan het begin van het project gelegd door uitgebreid onderzoek te doen naar de vraag van de biobased economy en het aanbod van biobased onderwijs. Allereerst heeft Blenders in samenwerking met de partners de nodige (toekomstige) skills en competenties in beeld gebracht van huidige en toekomstige medewerkers die bij bedrijven gevraagd worden. Experten - op verschillende domeinen - uit Vlaanderen en Nederland zijn bevraagd over hun inzichten op het vlak van toekomstige roadmaps, vereiste competenties, noodzakelijke oefen- en trainingsfaciliteiten en de opportuniteit van de uitbouw van een specifiek biobased georiënteerd platform. Op die manier konden de leemtes in bepaalde lesprogramma's op secundair, hoger en universitair (beroeps) onderwijsmodules ingevuld en aangepast worden. HoGent coördineerde de samenwerking tussen de partners om lesprogramma's en om- en bijscholingsprogramma's in kaart te brengen en af te stemmen op de toekomstige vraag. De gap tussen dit aanbod en de toekomstige vraag is in detail geanalyseerd en vormde de basis voor het actieprogramma: de ontwikkeling van nieuwe onderwijs programma’s, aanpassing van bestaande en inschakelen van ontbrekende infrastructuur. Curio heeft op haar beurt de inventarisatie gemaakt van alle trainings- en oefenfaciliteiten in de grensregio. Dit heeft ertoe geleid dat bestaande (oefen)faciliteiten zoals voor algenkweek, insecten, suiker- en bioraffinage zijn verbeterd en er is geïnvesteerd in apparatuur. Een shared facility structuur is opgezet waar zowel studenten als bedrijfsleven grensoverschrijdend gebruik kunnen maken van elkaars faciliteiten. Hierdoor wordt er veel meer en efficiënter gebruik gemaakt van deze (vaak kostbare) faciliteiten. Avans Hogeschool heeft een digitaal biobased kennisnetwerk ontwikkeld waar al het ontwikkelde lesmateriaal, informatie over stages, onderzoeks- en testfaciliteiten, biobased experts en events is terug te vinden. Onderdeel is een docentenpool voor biobased opleidingen waarbij docenten daadwerkelijk uitgewisseld worden. Docenten, studenten en bedrijven die meer willen weten over biobased onderwijs en de biobased economy kunnen terecht op www.biobasednetwork.eu. Dankzij Grenzeloos Biobased Onderwijs is er een groot grensoverschrijdend netwerk van alle biobased gerichte opleidingen ontstaan en kan er veel meer en beter op de vraag vanuit het bedrijfsleven geanticipeerd worden.

However, opportunities for economic growth, maintaining and expanding employment are under pressure due to a shortage of technically skilled people. Both the competences of current workers in the industry and educational programmes for tomorrow’s professionals are still too short. Five domains have been identified where the Biobased Economy will have an important impact: agriculture & horticulture, non-food, chemistry/biotechnology, materials and technology/cleantech. However, opportunities for economic growth, maintaining and expanding employment are under pressure if there are insufficient technically skilled people and workers lack the necessary competences. To stimulate innovation in the biobased economy, collaboration between sectors and educational disciplines is essential. Fourteen Flemish and (south) Dutch education and knowledge partners and advocates of the biobased sector have worked together on the opportunities and challenges that the biobased economy offers the border region. The result of this collaboration has resulted in more than 45 biobased teaching modules, new biobased training and practice facilities at educational institutions, cross-border education programmes, exchange of teachers and students and a digital knowledge platform, where all the biobased teaching materials can be downloaded. Highlights: The basis for this end result was laid at the beginning of the project by conducting extensive research into the demand of the biobased economy and the supply of biobased education. First of all, Blenders, in collaboration with the partners, has identified the necessary (future) skills and competencies of current and future employees who are requested from companies. Experts — in various fields — from Flanders and the Netherlands have been asked about their insights in the field of future roadmaps, required competencies, necessary practice and training facilities and the opportunity of building a specific biobased oriented platform. In this way, the gaps in certain teaching programmes at secondary, higher and university (professional) teaching modules could be filled and adjusted. HoGent coordinated the cooperation between the partners to map educational programmes and retraining programmes and to align them with future demand. The gap between this supply and future demand has been analysed in detail and formed the basis for the action programme: the development of new education programmes, adaptation of existing and enabling missing infrastructure. Curio has in turn made the inventory of all training and practice facilities in the border region. This has led to the improvement of existing (practice) facilities such as algae farming, insects, sugar and biorefinery and investment in equipment. A shared facility structure has been set up where both students and businesses can make cross-border use of each other’s facilities. This makes much more and more efficient use of these (often expensive) facilities. Avans University of Applied Sciences has developed a digital biobased knowledge network where all the developed teaching materials, information on internships, research and testing facilities, biobased experts and events can be found. Part is a teacher pool for biobased training in which teachers are actually exchanged. Thanks to Borderless Biobased Education, a large cross-border network of all biobased targeted training has been created and much more and better anticipate the demand from the business community.
