The cross-border watercourses, Dommel and Warmbeek Tongelreep pose a major challenge in terms of water quality. One big stumbling block is the current management of the wastewater chains: during rainy periods, contaminated water overflows from the sewage systems into watercourses and a classic wastewater purification plant does not always work optimally. Serious disruption of the oxygen content and ammonia intoxication in stream courses therefore has a considerable impact on fauna and flora. The nearby industrial sites also need to be considered, as environmentally harmful substances can end up in the watercourses. IMPAKT! Is working on an innovative approach for improving the water quality through hydrobiological research into fish, macro fauna and water plants. It also aims to gain insight into the various overflows, discharge points and watercourse quality thanks to a meticulous measuring campaign and the development of various virtual models for sewage systems, wastewater purification and watercourses. Overflows are restricted by the construction of a reed field, for example, a filter or an open buffer basin. Furthermore, the Stadsdommel watercourse, for instance, will be equipped with an installation that provides surface water aeration, which acts as a 'refuge' for fish during overflow periods. The results should, ultimately, serve as a blueprint for nature recovery in the watercourses of other sub-basins throughout Flanders and the Netherlands. In addition to the De Dommel District Water Board, the Flemish Environmental Association, INFRAX and Aquafin are closely involved. The project also fits within the European Water Directive and the European network of protected nature reserves, Natura 2000.

De grensoverschrijdende waterlopen Dommel en Warmbeek Tongelreep vormen een grote uitdaging op gebied van waterkwaliteit. Een groot knelpunt is het huidige beheer van de afvalwaterketen: tijdens regenperiodes stort vervuild water vanuit de rioolstelsels over naar de waterlopen en werkt een klassieke rioolwaterzuiveringsinstallatie (RWZI) niet altijd optimaal. Ernstige verstoring van de zuurstofhuishouding en ammoniakvergiftiging in beeklopen tasten op die manier de aanwezige fauna en flora aan. Nabij gelegen bedrijventerreinen zijn tevens een aandachtspunt omdat milieugevaarlijke stoffen in de waterlopen kunnen terechtkomen. ‘IMPAKT!’ is gericht op het verbeteren van de waterkwaliteit. Basis hiervoor is het vergroten van het inzicht door middel van hydrobiologisch onderzoek naar vis, macrofauna en waterplanten. Op 22 locaties in verschillende beeklopen binnen het projectgebied is hydrobiologisch onderzoek uitgevoerd. Daarnaast worden binnen het meetprogrammma ecologie-ondersteunende fysisch/chemische parameters gemeten. In het Nederlandse deel is er een ingerichte meetnet van continue metingen bij overstorten, gemalen, RWZI en oppervlaktewater, en de grondstations voor neerslagmeting. In het Vlaamse deel van het stroomgebied zijn de bestaande meetinspanningen in het kader van IMPAKT! aanzienlijk verhoogd en wordt er gedurende 3 jaren een intensieve meetcampagne uitgevoerd: op 9 locaties in het stroomgebied van de Warmbeek en op 19 locaties in het stroomgebied van de Dommel maandelijks of tweewekelijks stalen genomen die geanalyseerd worden op diverse fysicochemische parameters. op 3 locaties op de Dommel en 1 locatie op de Warmbeek worden met multiparametersondes verzamelen continu meetgegevens van pH, zuurstofgehalte, geleidbaarheid, ammonium en nitraat verzameld. Door dit alles te combineren met ontwikkeling van verscheidene virtuele modellen van riolering (6-tal) , rioolwaterzuivering (5-tal) en waterloop (kwantitatief en kwalitatief) ontstaat inzicht in het functioneren van de verschillende overstorten, lozingspunten in relatie tot waterloopkwaliteit. De verschillende modellen zijn grotendeels gereed en nu wordt de stap gezet om te verkennen wat het effect is van bepaalde maatregelen. Op basis van deze inzichten kunnen beter onderbouwde besluiten over maatregelen worden genomen. Op een aantal plaatsen worden maatregelen uitgevoerd. Zo is de Stadsdommel voorzien van een installatie die voorziet in oppervlaktewaterbeluchting, wat als ‘vluchtplaats’ fungeert voor vissen tijdens momenten van overstorten. De monitoring van effecten is gestart. Ook zijn verdere maatregelen voorzien bij de zuivering en in de aanpak van belangrijke overstorten. De resultaten van IMPAKT dienen uiteindelijk als blauwdruk voor natuurherstel in de waterlopen van overige deelstroomgebieden in heel Vlaanderen en Nederland. Naast Waterschap De Dommel zijn de Vlaamse Milieumaatschappij, INFRAX en Aquafin nauw betrokken partijen. Het project kadert tevens binnen de Europese richtlijn Kaderrichtlijn Water en het Europese netwerk van beschermende natuurgebieden Natura 2000.

The transboundary watercourses Dommel and Warmbeek Tongelreep are a major challenge in terms of water quality. A major bottleneck is the current management of the wastewater chain: during rainy periods, polluted water flows from the sewage systems to the watercourses and a classic sewage treatment plant (RWZI) does not always work optimally. Severe disruption of oxygen and ammonia poisoning in streams thus affects the fauna and flora present. Nearby business parks are also a focal point because environmentally hazardous substances can end up in the watercourses. “Impakt!” is aimed at improving water quality. The basis for this is to increase insight through hydrobiological research into fish, macrofauna and aquatic plants. Hydrobiological research has been carried out at 22 locations in different streams within the project area. In addition, ecology-supporting physical/chemical parameters are measured within the measurement programme. In the Dutch part there is an equipped measuring network of continuous measurements during overflow, ground, RWZI and surface water, and the ground stations for precipitation measurement. In the Flemish part of the catchment area, the existing measurement efforts under IMPAKT! have been significantly increased and an intensive measurement campaign is carried out for 3 years: at 9 locations in the water catchment area of the Warmbeek and at 19 sites in the Dommel river basin taken monthly or biweekly samples that are analysed on various physicochemical parameters. at 3 locations on the Dommel and 1 location on the Warmbeek, multi-parameter probes continuously collect measurement data of pH, oxygen content, conductivity, ammonium and nitrate. By combining all this with the development of several virtual models of sewerage (6-tal), sewage treatment (5-tal) and watercourse (quantitative and qualitative) creates insight into the functioning of the various overflows, discharge points in relation to watercourse quality. The different models are largely ready and now the step is being taken to explore the impact of certain measures. Based on these insights, better informed decisions on measures can be taken. Measures are being implemented in a number of places. For example, the Stadsdommel is equipped with an installation that provides surface water aeration, which acts as a “place of refuge” for fish during overflows. The monitoring of effects has started. Further measures are also foreseen in the treatment of major overflows. The results of IMPAKT ultimately serve as a blueprint for nature restoration in the watercourses of other sub-basin areas throughout Flanders and the Netherlands. Besides Waterschap De Dommel, the Flemish Environmental Society, INFRAX and Aquafin are closely involved parties. The project is also part of the European Water Framework Directive and the European network of protected natural areas Natura 2000.
