‘EnEf’ zet in op het aanpakken van energiereductie en het inperken van CO2 uitstoot, een doel dat zich ontplooit in twee facetten. De eerste focus ligt op het reduceren van energiegebruik in glastoepassingen in onder andere solar, de tuinbouw en gebouwde omgeving. Het ontwikkelen van een multifunctionele coating op glas door middel van nanotechnologie zal bijdragen aan een efficiënt gebruik van zonne-energie. Dit onderzoek wordt uitgevoerd door KMO/MKB bedrijven zoals Kriya Materials en Ducatt en kennisinstellingen als TNO, UHasselt en UGent. Hogescholen Zuyd en Fontys vervolledigen de grensoverschrijdende samenwerking en bieden op maat gemaakte opleidingen aan. De economische haalbaarheid van de prototypes wordt verkend in diverse testcases. Ten tweede richt ‘EnEf’ zich op een kosten- en energiebesparende methode voor de ontwikkeling van farmaceutische peptiden. Peptiden zijn binnen deze sector belangrijk voor de totstandkoming van nieuwe medicijnen voor bijvoorbeeld hart- en vaatziekten en stofwisselingsziekten. Peptiden zijn er in lange en korte vorm. De korte peptiden worden op grote schaal geproduceerd via klassieke methoden. De huidige productietechnieken voor de lange – en meest efficiënte - versie is tot op heden een lastig, tijdrovend, inefficiënt en energieverslindend proces. Een nieuwe productietechnologie werd reeds ontwikkeld door onder andere Syncom en Enzypep. De eerste wetenschappelijke en technische resultaten tonen aan dat een besparing van het energieverbruik tot wel 70% in het productieproces gerealiseerd kan worden. Binnen ‘EnEf’ onderzoeken de twee eerder genoemde bedrijven, samen met UGent, een kosten- en energie-efficiënte methode. Ook hier zorgen de twee hogescholen Zuyd en Fontys voor een opleidingstraject.

EnEf is aimed at tackling energy reduction and limiting CO2 emissions, a goal that is evolving into two facets. The first focuses on reducing energy consumption in glass applications in a solar, greenhouse and built up environment, for example. Developing a multifunctional glass coating using nanotechnology will contribute to the efficient use of solar energy. This research is being conducted by SMOs, such as Kriya Materials and Ducatt, and knowledge institutions such as TNO (Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research) and the universities of Hasselt and Ghent. The Zuyd and Fontys universities complete the cross-border collaboration by offering customised courses. The economic feasibility of the prototypes is being examined in various test cases. Secondly, EnEf focuses on a cost and energy savings method for developing pharmaceutical peptides. Within this sector, peptides are crucial for developing new medicines for cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, for example. There are long and short forms of peptide. Short peptides are produced on a large-scale using classical methods. At the moment, the current production technique for the long – and most efficient – version is a difficult, time-consuming, inefficient and energy-wasting process. New production technology has already been developed by, among others, Syncom and Enzypep. The initial scientific and technical results show that savings of up to 70% of energy consumption can be achieved in the production process. Within EnEf, together with the University of Ghent, the two aforementioned companies are researching a cost and energy-efficient method. Here, too, the Zuyd and Fontys universities provide an educational programme.

De eerste focus ligt op het reduceren van energiegebruik in de tuinbouw en gebouwde omgeving en het verhogen van de efficiëntie van solar cellen en solar collectoren. Dit wordt gedaan door middel van een speciale multifunctionele coating op het glas wat in deze toepassingen wordt gebruikt om het zonlicht binnen te laten. Deze multifunctionele coating wordt ontwikkeld door middel van nanotechnologie en zal bijdragen aan een efficiënter gebruik van de zonne-energie. Er zijn inmiddels 14 nano-materialen ontwikkeld en getest op laboratoriumschaal. Van een selectie van 4 van deze materialen zijn nu coatingvloeistoffen geformuleerd, die op drie verschillende prototypes worden aangebracht en onder realistische praktijkomstandigheden worden beproefd. Dit onderzoek wordt uitgevoerd door KMO/MKB bedrijven zoals Kriya Materials en kennisinstellingen als TNO en Universiteit Hasselt. Hogescholen Zuyd en Fontys vervolledigen deze grensoverschrijdende samenwerking en bieden op maat gemaakte opleidingen aan. Binnen ‘EnEf’ onderzoeken de twee eerder genoemde bedrijven, samen met UGent, de peptide synthese methoden. Ook hier zorgen de twee hogescholen Zuyd en Fontys voor een opleidingstraject.

Achievements (EN):

The first focus is on reducing energy use in horticulture and built environment and increasing the efficiency of solar cells and solar collectors. This is done by means of a special multifunctional coating on the glass which is used in these applications to let in the sunlight. This multifunctional coating is developed through nanotechnology and will contribute to the more efficient use of solar energy. 14 nanomaterials have been developed and tested on a laboratory scale. From a selection of 4 of these materials, coating fluids are now formulated, which are applied to three different prototypes and tested under realistic practical conditions. This research is carried out by SME/SME companies such as Kriya Materials and knowledge institutions such as TNO and Hasselt University. University of Applied Sciences Zuyd and Fontys complete this cross-border cooperation and offer tailor-made training courses. The technical and economic feasibility of the prototypes is explored in various test cases: horticultural greenhouses (foil), homes and offices (glass), vehicles (glass) and PV solar panels (glass).
