In recent years, many people in Flanders and the Netherlands have been able to install solar cells, thanks to the subsidy policy. In some places the traditional solar panels have become a familiar sight on streets, even though not everyone considers them attractive. PV Opmaat responds to this challenge by finding more efficient and customised ways to integrate solar panels into homes and buildings. Solar cell materials consisting of a fine film present extraordinary opportunities as they can be applied directly to glass, steel or foil material. The adaptability of dimensions, shapes, colours and electrical properties means cells can be integrated into building products cost efficiently and aesthetically. There is a high demand from construction companies, housing associations and local power grids for cells with better integration options. To this end, PV Opmaat is researching and demonstrating promising applications of fine film solar cells in construction elements. This generates opportunities for interested producers and fitters. Thanks to the Interreg IV project, Solar Flare, an internationally pioneering alliance of companies and public organisations has emerged and the potential of fine film solar cells has been demonstrated. PV Opmaat is making good use of the results of this project and is taking it further on the basis of a solid foundation.

Vlamingen en Nederlanders hebben de afgelopen jaren massaal zonnecellen (PV) geïnstalleerd vanwege het subsidiebeleid daarrond. De traditionele zonnepanelen zijn op sommige plaatsen niet meer weg te denken uit het straatbeeld, al worden ze niet door iedereen even aantrekkelijk gevonden. ‘PV Opmaat’ speelt daarop in en streeft ernaar om zonnepanelen efficiënter en meer op maat te integreren in woningen en gebouwen. Zonnecelmaterialen die bestaan uit dunne film bieden bijzondere kansen omdat deze rechtstreeks op glas, staal of foliemateriaal aangebracht kunnen worden. Zowel de aanpasbaarheid van afmeting, vorm, kleur en elektrische eigenschappen bieden hierbij mogelijkheden om PV kostenefficiënt èn esthetisch in bouwproducten te integreren. Vanuit bouwondernemingen, woningbouwverenigingen, woningcorporaties en lokale energienetwerken is er veel vraag naar beter integreerbare PV. Daarom onderzoekt en demonstreert ‘PV OpMaat’ perspectiefvolle toepassingen van dunne film PV in bouwelementen. Hierdoor ontstaan kansen voor geïnteresseerde producten en installateurs. Inmiddels is 'PV OpMaat' afgerond. Er zijn vier demonstratiesites opgeleverd. Een bij de KU Leuven waar de invloed van temperatuur op semitransparante beglazing (dubbel glas en driedubbel glas) is bekeken als functie van verschillende ventilatie opties. Twee andere demosites op het dak van de TU Eindhoven (SolarBEAT). Hier is gekeken naar effecten van het kleuren en patroneren van PV voor zowel kristallijn-silicium als dunne film PV, zowel vanuit panelen met glas als panelen op kunststofbasis. Op de Wijk van Morgen in Heerlen, waar is gekeken naar flexibele dunnefilm zonnecel materiaal op Eternit golfplaten. Het eindsymposium van 'PV OpMaat' is gehouden op 19 juni 2019 op de TU Eindhoven. Highlights Specifieke doelstelling van het project was om in het programmagebied op termijn een zichzelf verbeterende keten te realiseren voor het ontwikkelen, vervaardigen en toepassen van bouwelementen op basis van geïntegreerde maatgesneden dunne film PV. Een meer generiek doel was om op basis van het hier verrichte onderzoek productgerichte business cases te ontwikkelen waarmee de publiek-private samenwerking rond Solliance, SEAC en Energyville benut zal worden om binnen het eigen programmagebied nieuwe bedrijvigheid te genereren en bij te dragen aan bredere toepassing van duurzame energieopwekking in de gebouwde omgeving. Voor zowel de specifieke als de generieke doelstelling kunnen we zeggen dat deze geslaagd is. Binnen de vier demonstratoren hebben ketens van bedrijven mogelijkheden gevonden om nieuwe toepassingen in de markt te zetten. Denk hierbij bijvoorbeeld aan de EnergieWall of het concept van Solarix dat nu echt als toepasbaar product wordt gezien. Ook voor de kenniscentra zoals Solliance en EnergyVille heeft het project in positieve termen uitgepakt. Enerzijds hebben ze de mogelijkheid gekregen om een flinke stap te maken in hun kennisontwikkeling. Anderzijds zijn ze via de PPL constructies uitgedaagd om het ook praktisch toepasbaar voor de markt te houden. De markt heeft daardoor via diezelfde PPL constructies gezien hoe de kenniscentra kunnen helpen bij de ontwikkeling van producten die de bedrijven op de markt willen brengen. Dankzij het Interreg IV project ‘Solar Flare’ kwam reeds een internationaal toonaangevende alliantie van bedrijven en publieke instellingen tot stand en is de potentie van dunne film zonnecellen aangetoond. ‘PV Opmaat’ maakte dankbaar gebruik van de uitkomst van dit project en bouwde er op verder.

The traditional solar panels are in some places unthinkable from the street scene, although they are not equally attractive by everyone. ‘PV Opmaat’ responds to this and strives to integrate solar panels more efficiently and tailor-made into homes and buildings. Solar cell materials consisting of thin film offer special opportunities because they can be applied directly to glass, steel or foil material. Both the adaptability of size, shape, colour and electrical properties offer possibilities to integrate PV into construction products cost-effectively and aesthetically. From construction companies, housing associations, housing corporations and local energy networks, there is a lot of demand for better integrated PV. That is why ‘PV OpMaat’ investigates and demonstrates perspectiveful applications of thin film PV in building elements. This creates opportunities for interested products and installers. In the meantime, “PV OpMaat” has been completed. Four demonstration sites have been completed. One at KU Leuven where the influence of temperature on semi-transparent glazing (double glazing and triple glazing) has been viewed as a function of different ventilation options. Two other demo sites on the roof of TU Eindhoven (SolarBEAT). Here we looked at effects of coloring and patronising PV for both crystalline silicon and thin film PV, both from glass and plastic-based panels. At the Wijk van Morgen in Heerlen, where has been looked at flexible thin film solar cell material on Eternit corrugated plates. The final symposium of ‘PV OpMaat’ was held on 19 June 2019 at TU Eindhoven. The final report can be downloaded on this page (right). Highlights: The specific objective of the project was to eventually create a self-improving chain in the programme area for the development, manufacture and application of building elements based on integrated cut thin film PV. A more generic goal was to develop product-oriented business cases based on the research carried out here to leverage the public-private partnership around Solliance, SEAC and Energyville to generate new business within its own programme area and contribute to the wider application of renewable energy generation in the built environment. For both the specific and the generic objective, we can say that it has succeeded. Within the four demonstrators, chains of companies have found opportunities to market new applications. Think, for example, of the EnergieWall or the concept of Solarix that is now really seen as an applicable product. For the knowledge centres such as Solliance and EnergyVille, the project has also worked out in positive terms. On the one hand, they have been given the opportunity to make a significant step in their knowledge development. On the other hand, they were challenged via the PPL constructions to keep it practically applicable to the market. The market has thus seen through the same PPL constructions how the knowledge centres can help in the development of products that the companies want to market. Thanks to the Interreg IV project ‘Solar Flare’, an internationally leading alliance of companies and public institutions has already been established and the potential of thin film solar cells has been demonstrated.
