Sport is een dynamische en snelgroeiende economische sector. ‘Nano4Sports’ heeft als doel om innovatie in het sport-, beweeg- en gezondheidsdomein in de grensregio te stimuleren en verder op de kaart te zetten. De nodige ingrediënten zijn alvast aanwezig: eminente technologische spelers, innovatieve bedrijven, excellente (top)sporters en coaches en een groot aantal recreatieve sporters. Dankzij sensortechnologie kunnen coaches, topsporters en amateursporters hun sportprestaties verbeteren en blessurerisico’s indijken. ‘Nano4Sports’ zal zeer geavanceerde sensoren ontwikkelen die de sporter goed kan dragen tijdens het sporten en hem of haar feedback geven over tal van zaken, zoals de fysieke activiteit, houding, hartslag, spierinspanningen of huidgeleidbaarheid. Het legt de focus op lopen en fietsen en zal in Vlaanderen het livinglab-platform Run4Sports & Bike4Sports uitbouwen, een samenwerking van KU Leuven Indoor Atletiekhal, UGent Sport Science Lab, Topsporthal en Wielercentrum Eddy Merckx. Allerhande metingen van de te ontwikkelen sensortechnologieën zullen in deze beide livinglabs uitgevoerd worden. Ook in Nederland zullen bestaande SportFieldLabs participeren aan deze pilot tests. Een belangrijke troef is dat er vraaggestuurd te werk wordt gegaan. Sporters zullen in een vroeg stadium van de technologieontwikkeling betrokken worden zodat rekening wordt gehouden met hun specifieke noden en behoeften. Naast het meten van de fysieke activiteit van het lopen en fietsen, wordt ingezet op continue monitoring waarbij specifieke parameters zoals hartslag, spieren en huidgeleidbaarheid bij de sporter gedurende lange tijd opgemeten worden, zowel voor, tijdens en na fysieke inspanning. Er wordt voortgebouwd op eerder onderzoek van IMEC dat hierin het voortouw nam en een patch ontwikkelde waarin zowel hartregistratie als bewegingssensoren zitten vervat om langdurige metingen te kunnen uitvoeren.

Sports is a dynamic, fast-growing economic sector. Nano4Sports aims to encourage and further publicise innovation in sports, exercise and health in the border region. The necessary ingredients are already in place: prominent technological players, innovative companies, excellent (top) athletes and coaches and a large number of people engaged in recreational sports. Thanks to sensor technology, coaches, athletes and amateur sports enthusiasts can improve their sports performances and limit the risks of injury. Nano4Sports will be developing highly-advanced sensors that sports people can easily wear while playing sports. This gives them feedback on a number of issues, such as physical activity, posture, heart rate, muscle tension and skin conductivity. It focuses on running and cycling and will be expanding the living lab platform Run4Sports & Bike4Sports in Flanders, a collaboration between the University of Leuven's Indoor Athletics Hall, the University of Ghent's Sport Science Lab, Topsporthal and the Eddy Merckx Cycle Centre. All kinds of measurements of the sensor technologies being developed will be carried out in these two living labs. In the Netherlands, too, existing SportFieldLabs will be participating in these pilot tests. One major asset is that the work is demand-driven. Athletes will be involved at an early stage in the technology development to accommodate their specific needs and requirements. In addition to measuring the physical activities of running and cycling, there will also be a focus on the constant monitoring of specific parameters, such as heart rate, muscles and skin conductivity before, during and after physical exertion. Earlier IMEC research will be built on, which took the initiative and developed a patch that includes both heart registration and movement sensors to enable long-term measurements.

Dankzij sensortechnologie kunnen coaches, topsporters en amateursporters hun sportprestaties verbeteren en blessurerisico’s indijken. Binnen Nano4Sports werden op basis van nanotechnologie prototypes ontwikkeld die de sporter goed kan dragen tijdens het sporten en hem of haar feedback geven over tal van zaken, zoals de fysieke activiteit, houding, hartslag,... Er werd binnen dit project voornamelijk gefocust op lopen en fietsen. Een kleine greep uit de vele prototypes die werden ontwikkeld: - een innovatieve tool om stress van sporters te meten het opmeten van schokken ter hoogte van het scheenbeen bij lopers om op deze manier overbelastingsblessures te voorkomen. - een feedbacksysteem waarbij de loper informatie krijgt over zijn loophouding door middel van muziek. De rode draad was dat nieuwe producten in een vroege fase van de ontwikkeling werden getest met de eindgebruiker. In het kader daarvan werd in Vlaanderen een livinglab-platform uitgebouwd, in samenwerking met KU Leuven, Indoor Atletiekhal, UGent Sport Science Lab, Topsporthal en Wielercentrum Eddy Merckx. Ook in Nederland participeerde het bestaande SportFieldLab aan deze pilot tests. Allerhande metingen van de te ontwikkelen sensortechnologieën werden in beide livinglabs uitgevoerd. Bovendien was het ontwerpen, implementeren en evalueren van gepaste feedback een belangrijke taak binnen het project. De uitdaging bestond erin om deze feedback op een overtuigende en verstaanbare manier aan te leveren, zodat de sporters en hun begeleiders voor, tijdens en na het sporten nuttige inzichten kunnen verwerven over hun sportprestaties. Het is de bedoeling dat door feedback de nodige acties kunnen ondernomen worden om de sportprestaties significant te verhogen, om op een ‘veiligere’ manier te sporten (minder blessures), of om meer en meer gemotiveerd te sporten (recreatieve sporter). Het ultieme doel is dat de sporter niet enkel zal reageren op externe prikkels, maar door het krijgen van gepaste feedback over zijn eigen prestaties het meest optimale gedrag zal aanleren en dit langdurig zal aanhouden. Thanks to sensor technology, coaches, top athletes and amateur athletes can improve their sports performance and mitigate injury risks. Within Nano4Sports, prototypes were developed based on nanotechnology that the athlete can wear well during exercise and give him or her feedback on numerous issues such as physical activity, posture, heart rate, etc. Within this project, the focus was mainly on walking and cycling. A small selection of the many prototypes that have been developed: — an innovative tool to measure stress from athletes to measure shocks at the level of the shin in runners to prevent overload injuries. — a feedback system where the runner gets information about his walking position through music. The common thread was that new products were tested with the end user at an early stage of development. As part of this, a living lab platform was developed in Flanders, in collaboration with KU Leuven, Indoor athletics hall, UGent Sport Science Lab, Topsporthal and Cycling Centre Eddy Merckx. In the Netherlands, the existing SportFieldLab also participated in these pilot tests. All kinds of measurements of the sensor technologies to be developed were carried out in both living labs. An important asset is that demand-driven work was carried out. Athletes were involved at an early stage of technology development so that their specific needs and needs were taken into account. Feedback is intended to take the necessary actions to significantly increase sports performance, to exercise in a “safer” way (less injuries), or to exercise more and more motivated (recreational athlete). The ultimate goal is that the athlete will not only respond to external stimuli, but by getting appropriate feedback about his own performance will learn and maintain the most optimal behavior.
