Par une approche holistique, RE-DIRECT a pour but de promouvoir l´utilisation efficace des ressources naturelles en convertissant la biomasse résiduelle en produits carbonés à l’échelle d‘unités régionales décentralisées. Le projet comprend 11 partenaires de Belgique, Allemagne, France, Irlande et Royaume-Uni. Chaque année, plus de 34 mill. t de biomasse résiduelle issues de l’entretien des paysages ruraux et urbains de l’Europe du Nord Ouest sont gaspillées. D´autre part, le marché de produits carbonés tels que le charbon actif augmente fortement, notamment pour le traitement des eaux usées polluées. RE-DIRECT se base sur la technologie éprouvée de « production intégrée de combustibles solides et de biogaz à partir de la biomasse » (IFBB) pour convertir 20 000 t de biomasse résiduelle en produits carbonés tels que le charbon actif, dans une perspective d’économique circulaire. Cet objectif sera atteint durant le projet par les acteurs territoriaux (producteurs de déchets verts, PME, associations, chercheurs et agences de développement régional). Ils développeront et gèreront la création de produits adaptés aux spécificités régionales et de chaînes de valeur économique dans le cadre de « concepts de biomasse intégrés". Le projet développera un investissement à grande échelle pour la production de biochar et de charbon actif dans un centre de traitement de déchets verts urbains en Allemagne, et une petite usine de transformation à l´ échelle de la ferme au Pays de Galles permettant la création et la sécurisation de 20 emplois à proximité immédiate de l´usine générant ainsi de l’emploi et des sources de revenus au sein de groupes défavorisés de la société (chômeurs et habitants dans les zones rurales reculées). Des activités de formation seront mises en place pour soutenir la mise en œuvre des projets participatifs et durables et la création d´un produit innovant innovant et de chaînes de valeur dans les régions du projet et au-delà.

RE-DIRECT ist ein ganzheitlicher Ansatz zur Förderung der effizienten Nutzung natürlicher Ressourcen durch die Konvertierung von Restbiomassen in Biokohle und Aktivkohle in smarten, dezentralen Einheiten. Das Projekt involviert 11 Partner aus BE, DE, Fr, IR und UK. Diese werden den Ansatz in 5 städtischen und ländlichen Regionen umsetzen. Jedes Jahr werden in NWE zumindest 34 mill. t Restbiomasse aus Landschafts- und Stadtpflege nicht genutzt. Andererseits existiert ein wachsender Markt für nachhaltige und dezentral erzeugte Produkte, z.B. Aktivkohle, die in Kläranlagen genutzt werden kann um komplexe chemische Verbindungen wie z.B. Medizinalrückstande aus dem Wasser zu filtern. RE-DIRECT wird die erprobte IFBB Technologie nutzen, um 20 000 t der Restbiomassen in einem regionalspezifischen Kreislaufsystem zu Kohleprodukten wie z.B. Aktivkohle zu veredeln. Das wird in der Projektlaufzeit erreicht durch interregionale Stakeholder-Gemeinschaften (Städte, Landschaftspflege, Industrie, KMUs, NROs, Wissenschaftler) die regional-spezifische Produkt-Portfolios und ökonomische Wertschöpfungsketten erforschen, entwickeln und managen. RE-DIRECT wird ein großmaßstäbliches Investment in eine städtische, Biokohle und Aktivkohle produzierende Anlage, angeschlossen an die städtischen Klär- und Kompostwerke durchführen. Zudem wird auch ein etwas kleinskaligeres Investment in eine ländliche Biomasse-Konversionsanlage in Wales durchgeführt. Dies schafft und erhalt bis zu 20 Arbeitsplätze in direkter Umsetzung der Anlage und generiert die Chance auf Arbeitsplätze und Einkommen auch für benachteiligte soziale Gruppen, die derzeit arbeitslos sind oder in sehr ländlichen Regionen leben. Aktivitäten zum Aufbau von Erfahrung und Kapazität werden geplant und durchgeführt um die Implementierung der partizipatorischen und nachhaltigen Entwicklung und der innovativen Wertschöpfungskette in den Regionen und darüber hinausgehend sicherzustellen.

Description (EN):

RE-DIRECT is a holistic approach to promote the efficient use of natural resources and materials by converting residual biomass into carbon products and activated carbon at smart regional decentralised units. The project involves 11 partners from BE, DE, FR, IR and the UK who will implement the approach in 5 urban, semi-urban and rural NWE regions. Each year at least 34 million t of residual biomass from the management of rural landscapes and urban greens in NWE are wasted. On the other hand, there is a growing market for sustainable and decentralised products such as active coal, used in sewage water technologies to clean water polluted with complex chemical substances or antibiotics. RE-DIRECT will make use of the proven technology for Integrated Generation of Solid Fuel and Biogas from Biomass (IFBB) to convert 20 000 t of unused biomass in a circular economy approach into region specific carbon products, among them activated carbon. This will be achieved in the project lifetime by regional and interregional stakeholder communities (biomass waste producers, industries, SMEs, NGOs, researchers and regional interest groups) who explore, develop and manage region-specific product portfolios and create economic value chains in the framework of transferrable “integrated biomass concepts”. The project will develop one large scale investment for a biochar and activated carbon production at a urban biomass conversion centre in DE and one small conversion plant on farm scale in Wales; creating and securing 20 jobs in direct proximity to the plant and providing additional employment and income generating projects for disadvantaged society groups (unemployed and inhabitants in backward rural areas). Capacity building activities will be planned and delivered to support the implementation of the participatory and sustainable development projects and the creation of innovative product an value chains in the project regions and beyond.

Expected Outputs (EN):

In NWE, more than 34 million t of biomass per year are wasted. On the other hand charcoal products are being imported (among them 70 000 t of active carbon (AC) p.a.; stemming mainly from fossile fuels with increasing tendency due to the high demand for AC waste water cleaning, as EU regulations become stricter. By now there is no conversion of waste biomass into carbon products – only for fuel purposes in Baden-Baden (3.000 t pa; however, this is a linear economy application.).
