Over the next few decades, both the Netherlands and Flanders will have the considerable task of replacing and reinstalling wastewater facilities in outlying areas. Innovative, sustainable applications are therefore being sought on both sides of the border. No commercial solutions are available, so the experimental development, testing, monitoring and demonstrating of innovative wastewater facilities at various location types is important. The solutions focus on water recovery and saving and recovering raw materials. One point for attention here is the industrial applicability of the facilities being developed in order to ensure the feasibility of the future large-scale roll-out of developed applications. I-QUA is working on various test cases. The reuse of water will be explored in a car wash in Nerhoven (NL), with the installation of decentralised purification and the waste water being made suitable for commercial reuse. In addition, a mobile water treatment facility is being developed using water-plant purification suitable for events at which temporary mobile toilets, eateries and showers are used. Often, the water is simply discharged into surface water or flows to a sewage plant. I-QUA attempts to optimally streamline the entire chain of water supply, discharge and purification into a total concept. At the HVCH Heesch club football club sport complex, efforts are being made to recover raw materials, and wastewater flows are being fully separated so that urine, for example, can be processed into fertiliser.

Both in the Netherlands and in Flanders, there will be a major challenge for the coming decades with regard to the replacement and reinstallation of wastewater facilities in the outside area. Both sides of the border are therefore looking for innovative and sustainable applications. Because commercial solutions are not available, the experimental development, testing, monitoring and demonstration of innovative wastewater facilities at different types of locations is important. The solutions are aimed at water recovery and the saving or recovery of raw materials. The industrial applicability of the facilities to be developed so that future large-scale deployment of the developed applications is possible. ‘I-QUA’ focuses on various test cases. For three years, six Flemish partners (Province of West Flanders, VLAKWA/VITO, UGent, Aquafin, Garden Creation Wouter Igodt and ecobeton Water Technologies) and three Dutch partners (municipality of Bernheze, municipality of Gilze-Rijen and Recreatiebedrijf Pukkemuk) have jointly developed and tested innovative solutions. The reuse of water has been studied in a carwash in Gilze (NL), where a decentralised treatment based on step-by-step filtration has been realised. In Kuurne (BE) in a catering business (Gust’Eaux) that is not connected to the sewer, a solution has been developed and tested in which domestic waste water (including black water) has been treated to drinking water. At recreational company Pukkemuk in Dongen (NL), a sustainable wastewater treatment was built on the basis of a willow filter, including after-treatment for part of the waste water quantity. In addition, Tuincreatie Wouter Igodt (BE) has developed a mobile treatment plant based on plant treatment, specifically suitable for events with wastewater (from mobile toilets, eateries and showers). In a sports complex of football association HVCH Heesch (NL), the existing wastewater flows are completely separated during a renovation of the club building. The various wastewater streams consist of urine without rinsing water, the shower water with the kitchen waste water and the waste water from the toilets. At an organic Goat Farm in East Flanders (BE), the focus is on the purification of the milk spool water via a parallel arrangement, consisting of a single-dance rose filter and an ICS filter, this with maximum water reuse. The knowledge gained from these pilots has been combined in a final report. This report will be made available to all project partners and other relevant parties. The balancing framework is a step-by-step plan that organisations or individuals can use when making choices for a decentralised wastewater treatment plant. During the project, through site visits, experts events, conferences, a website, scientific articles, newsletters and contributions in journals and magazines, we have the knowledge gained among residents, companies, municipalities, provinces and other government agencies. In addition, the knowledge gained is accessed through national organisations such as STOWA. I-Qua has shown that innovative solutions for wastewater treatment are possible and thus increase the support for these types of solutions.

Zowel in Nederland als in Vlaanderen ligt er voor de komende decennia een grote opgave ten aanzien van het vervangen en opnieuw aanleggen van afvalwatervoorzieningen in het buitengebied. Aan beide zijden van de grens wordt daarom gezocht naar innovatieve en duurzame toepassingen. Omdat commerciële oplossingen niet beschikbaar zijn, is het experimenteel ontwikkelen, testen, monitoren en demonstreren van innovatieve afvalwatervoorzieningen op verschillende type locaties van belang. De oplossingen zijn gericht op waterrecuperatie en het besparen of terugwinnen van grondstoffen. Aandachtspunt hierbij is de industriële toepasbaarheid van de te ontwikkelen voorzieningen, zodat toekomstige grootschalige uitrol van de ontwikkelde toepassingen mogelijk is. ‘I-QUA’ zet in op verschillende testcases. Gedurende drie jaar hebben zes Vlaamse partners (Provincie West-Vlaanderen, VLAKWA/VITO, UGent, Aquafin,Tuincreatie Wouter Igodt en Ecobeton Water Technologies) en drie Nederlandse partners (gemeente Bernheze,gemeente Gilze-Rijen en Recreatiebedrijf Pukkemuk) gezamenlijk innovatieve oplossingen ontwikkeld en getest. Het hergebruik van water is onderzocht in een carwash in Gilze (NL), waarbij een decentrale zuivering op basis van stapsgewijze filtratie gerealiseerd is. In Kuurne (BE) is in een horecazaak (Gust'Eaux) die niet is aangesloten op het riool, een oplossing ontwikkeld en getest waarbij huishoudelijk afvalwater (inclusief zwart water) is opgezuiverd tot drinkwater. Bij recreatiebedrijf Pukkemuk in Dongen (NL) is een duurzame afvalwaterzuivering op basis van een wilgenfilter aangelegd, inclusief na-zuivering voor een deel van de afvalwaterhoeveelheid. Daarnaast is door Tuincreatie Wouter Igodt (BE) een mobiele zuiveringsinstallatie op basis van plantenzuivering ontwikkeld, specifiek geschikt voor events met afvalwater (afkomstig van mobiele toiletten, eettentjes en douches). In een sportcomplex van voetbalvereniging HVCH Heesch (NL) zijn bij een renovatie van het clubgebouw de bestaande afvalwaterstromen volledig gescheiden. De verschillende afvalwaterstromen bestaan uit urine zonder spoelwater, het douchewater met het keukenafvalwater en het afvalwater uit de toiletten. Bij een biologische Geitenboerderij in Oost-Vlaanderen (BE) is gefocust op het zuiveren van het melkspoelwater via een parallelle opstelling, bestaande uit een eendenkroosfilter en een ICS-filter, dit met maximaal water hergebruik. ‘De kennis die is opgedaan met deze pilots is samengevoegd in een eindrapport. Dit rapport wordt beschikbaar gesteld aan alle projectpartners en andere relevante partijen. Het afwegingskader is een stappenplan dat organisaties of personen kunnen gebruiken bij het maken van keuzes voor een decentrale waterzuiveringsinstallatie. Gedurende het project hebben we door middel van locatiebezoeken, experts events, conferenties, een website, wetenschappelijk artikelen, nieuwsbrieven en bijdrages in vakbladen en magazines de kennis die is opgedaan verspreid onder bewoners, bedrijven, gemeenten, provincies en andere overheidsinstanties. Daarnaast is de opgedane kennis ontsloten via landelijke organisaties als STOWA. I-Qua heeft laten zien dat innovatieve oplossingen voor afvalwaterzuivering mogelijk zijn en hiermee het draagvlak voor dit soort oplossingen vergroot.
