De vergrijzing neemt toe in de grensregio, wat gepaard gaat met onder andere de groei van klachten over ernstige gewrichtsslijtage. Het plaatsen van een gewrichtsvervangend implantaat kan een oplossing zijn, maar deze generieke implantaten hebben een beperkte levensduur zodat ze vaak vervangen moeten worden. Er is duidelijk behoefte aan een nieuwe generatie medische implantaten die idealiter specifiek gemaakt worden voor de anatomische vorm van de patiënt. ‘PRosPERoS’ speelt hierop in en wil nieuwe patiënt-specifieke implantaten ontwikkelen voor heup en rug die het genezingsproces versnellen, verbeteren en zo infecties voorkomen. De basis van het onderzoek is de veelbelovende regeneratieve geneeskunde waarbij het lichaam van de patiënt gestimuleerd wordt om zèlf beschadigd of verwijderd weefsel te regenereren. Er zullen 3D geprinte implantaten, ontstekingsremmende en botgroei-stimulerende coatings en nieuwe resorbeerbare biomedische materialen ontwikkeld worden. Maar liefst vijf universiteiten en academische ziekenhuizen in de grensregio zullen samenwerken met bedrijven zoals Antleron en PCOTech die over laboratoria beschikken voor het uitvoeren van het preklinisch onderzoek, maar ook in staat zijn om de klinische studies in het laatste stadium van het project uit te voeren. Bedrijven zoals Xilloc staan in voor het ontwerp, productie en commercialisatie van implantaten en coating technologieën. Op die manier kan er een stevig netwerk rond regeneratieve geneeskunde tot stand komen in de grensregio met regionale kenniscentra, hightech industrie en academisch-medische centra.

The region has a rapidly ageing population, which is reflected in the rise in problems with serious joint wear. Joint replacement implants can offer a solution, but these generic implants have a limited life and therefore often have to be replaced themselves. There is a clear need for a new generation of medical implants, ideally specifically made for the anatomical form of the patient. PRosPERoS is responding to this need and aims to develop new patient-specific hip and back implants, which will accelerate and improve the healing process and therefore prevent infections. The basis for the research is the promising field of regenerative medicine, in which the patient's body is stimulated to regenerate damaged or removed tissue itself. 3D printed implants, anti-inflammatory and bone-growth stimulating coatings and new, resorbable biomedical materials will be developed. No fewer than five universities and teaching hospitals in the border region will be working together with companies such as Antleron and PCOTech, who have laboratories for conducting the preclinical research, but are also able to carry out the clinical studies in the final stage of the project. Companies such as Xilloc will be responsible for the design, production and commercialisation of implants and coating technologies. This will enable the emergence of a solid regenerative medicine network in the border region with regional knowledge centres, high-tech industry and academic-medical centres.

Prosperos speelde hierop in en ontwikkelde nieuwe patiënt-specifieke implantaten voor heup en rug die het genezingsproces versnellen, verbeteren en infecties voorkomen. De basis van het onderzoek is de veelbelovende regeneratieve geneeskunde waarbij het lichaam van de patiënt gestimuleerd wordt om zèlf beschadigd of verwijderd weefsel te regenereren. Er zijn nieuwe 3D geprinte implantaten, ontstekingsremmende en botgroei-stimulerende coatings en nieuwe resorbeerbare biomedische materialen ontwikkeld, die nu al deels hun toepassing in de kliniek vinden. Het onderzoek leidde tot nieuwe concepten, waardoor patiënten effectiever behandeld kunnen worden en minder lang gehospitaliseerd zullen worden. Maar liefst vijf universiteiten en academische ziekenhuizen in de grensregio hebben vier jaar lang intensief samengewerkt met bedrijven zoals Antleron en Medanex, die over laboratoria beschikken voor het uitvoeren van het preklinisch onderzoek, maar ook in staat zijn om de klinische studies in het laatste stadium van het project te begeleiden. Bedrijven zoals Xilloc, 3D systems en 2Move Implants hebben ingestaan voor het ontwerp en productie van implantaten en coating technologieën. Naar verwachting zal de ontwikkelde technologie vercommercialiseerd worden in nieuwe generaties producten. Dankzij Prosperos is er een stevig netwerk rond regeneratieve geneeskunde en 3D printing tot stand gekomen in de grensregio met regionale kenniscentra, hightech industrie en academisch-medische centra. Het ligt in de lijn der verwachting dit verder te ontwikkelen en ook uit te breiden naar andere klinische indicaties. Resultaten en neveneffecten Vanuit het project zijn verschillende resultaten te benoemen die in positieve zin invloed hebben op het grensgebied en toe te schrijven zijn aan het project: Prosperos is een sterk consortium in de grensregio gebleken, en een daarvan afgeleid resultaat zal een Centre of Expertise worden op het gebied van patiënt-specifieke orthopedische implantaten. Dit Centre zal de innovatie in de regio aanjagen, en zich ook richten op actieve disseminatie (workshops, scholing), IP bescherming, valorisatie en onderwijs. Nieuwe technologieën creëren een nieuwe markt voor bedrijven die innovatieve implantaten ontwerpen, produceren en commercialiseren. Er wordt gebouwd aan een netwerk dat regionale kenniscentra, high-tech industrie en academisch-medische centra met elkaar verbindt. Samen met de centrale ligging van de regio in Europa vormt dit een belangrijke vestigingsfactor voor internationale life-science bedrijven. Onlangs is er door de Provincies Nederlands-Limburg en Vlaams-Brabant een convenant gesloten, waarin beide Provincies afspreken om intensief te gaan samenwerken op het gebied van regeneratieve geneeskunde. Dit project is een eerste exponent van dit convenant, waarbij het samenkomen van de juiste expertise door de grensoverschrijdende samenwerking essentieel is om de projectdoelstellingen te bereiken.
