Description
Description (EN): Bega Canal is from more points of view one of the key linkers of Romanian and Serbian Communities, the only living boulevard connecting the two countries. Considering that the Bega Canal is one of the significant waterways for Zrenjanin, Zitiste and Timișoara, its revival concerning navigation, even if only in line with the original parameters, would mean connecting Banat, both to the Black Sea and the North Sea, through the existing system of canals in Serbia DTD (Danube – Tisa - Danube) and the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal. In order to reopen the navigability on the Bega Canal and to boost the tourism in the area, there are some measures to be taken and it can be an important common challenge and an opportunity to develop the region.
The main common challenge of the project is to improve the general accessibility and mobility of people and goods through Repairing of Bega Canal. Mobility is one of the most fundamental and important characteristics of economic activity, as it satisfies the basic need of going from one location to the other, a need shared by passengers, freight and information.
This project aims to continue the steps that have been taken so far by implementing the above mentioned project through the Repairing of the hydro complex Sanmihaiul Roman, Klek and Srpski Itebej, the construction of working inspection/bicycle path, technical documentation for dredging Bega Canal, providing equipment for dredging and maintaining Bega Canal, wider opportunities for trade and economic cooperation will emerge.
It will also result in motivation, creation and development of corresponding transport links on both sides of the border as well as promote good neighborliness and cooperation between Romania and Serbia neighbours.
The project overall objective is: Promoting cross – border sustainable transport and mobility infrastructure improvement for the shaping of Bega Canal area as an internationally recognized destination for outstanding tourism experience, diverse cultures, integrated communities and protected nature.
Project specific objectives are: Increasing cross – border competitiveness by improving the accessibility and connectivity of the cross border region through raised transport and mobility infrastructure standard. Enhancing Bega Canal Area as an internationally recognized, green, visitor friendly destination.
The project main results are: Repaired and operational HC Klek and Srpski Itebej -2<. Constructed working inspection path/cycle path - 1. Constructed Floating dock and mooring points in Zrenjanin - 1. Repaired and functional HC Sânmihaiu Roman - 1. Project Technical Committee Appointment - 1. Joint Studies and Technical Documentation developed for the realization of actions in the field of transport and mobility infrastructure - 6. Joint project conferences - 8. Joint project tours - 2. Joint set of promotional materials - 1. Specific equipment - IT - notebook, notebook computers 6. Specific equipment – on site – 7 ( 2 terrain vehicles, 2 multipurpose dredger, 1 aquatic weed harvester, 1 barge, 1 motor barge). Joint training package – 1. Trained persons – 30. Repairing of the Sînmihaiu Român and Klek and Srpski ItebeJ hydro complexes will restore a cross – border navigation axis, It is the most important objective of this project which contributes to development of public mobility and transport services on the Bega Canal.
The construction of floating dock and mooring point in Zrenjanin will boost the interest of local people to develop tourism. The construction of working inspection/ bicycle path on Serbian side will increase the number of people willing to adopt a healthy method of travel from one location to another. The joint studies and technical documentation will pave the way for an ecologic and European linked inland waterway. Management, promotion and training activities will further strengthen key institutional actors capacity and will raise public awareness.
IN CONCLUSION, BEGA CANAL INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT IS A MAJOR IMPACT CROSS – BORDER STRATEGIC CHALLENGE. RESTORING THE NAVIGABILITY OF THE CANAL WILL LEAD TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF JOINT ALTERNATIVE AND SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL GROWTH FACTORS.

The joint studies and technical documentation will pave the way for a ecologic and European linked inland waterway.
Management, promotion and training activities will further strengthen key institutional actors capacity and will raise public awareness.
Having into consideration the main project results, we consider that they link to the programme result indicator because all of them contribute to improve navigability (local) transport infrastructures, faster and ecologic connections, efficient border crossing services, all leading to an efficient, healthy method of travel from one location to another.
By rehabilitating and reopening of navigability on the Bega Canal it will be improve quality standard in public transport and mobility services in the eligible area.
Also, by continuing works at the working inspection/ bicycle path alongside Bega Canal on the Serbian territory contributes to the programme result indicator by creating a faster connection. The population will be able to move from one place to another more efficiently in a natural setting.
Besides it is more efficient, bicycle transport is less expensive and better for people’s health.
