Description (EN):

10 ERDF and 5 IPA partners representing geological surveys, university, industry, regional energy and development agencies, ministry and municipality, assisted by 7 ASP-s from HU, SLO, HR, SRB, BH and RO will work together to improve energy security and efficiency in the DR by promoting sustainable utilization of the existing, however still largely untapped deep geothermal resources in the heating sector, as a main objective. The project areas covers the central and SE-ern part of the DR, encompassing S-Hungary (S-Transdanubia and S-ern part of the Great Plain), NE-Slovenia (Pomurska and Podravska), N-Croatia (Slavonia), W-ern Srpska and the Central- and N-ern parts of Bosnia-Herzegovina, N-Serbia (Vojvodina) and W-Romania (Crisana and Banat), altogether about 92000 km2. The specific objectives are (1) to increase the use of geothermal energy and help the penetration of energy efficient cascade systems and matching them with heat-markets (concept of “resource-parks”), (2) to establish a market-replicable tool-box consisting of 3 complementary modules for sustainable geothermal reservoir management (benchmark evaluation of current uses, decision tree to help developers, geological risk mitigation scheme), (3) to advance stakeholder cooperation (establishment of a Transnational Stakeholder Forum) to foster geothermal developments and to create a strong geothermal value chain. As a main result the intensity of cooperation will increase and contribute to energy security and energy efficiency by increasing the use of geothermal energy in the heating sector, which will make the DR less dependent on imported fossil fuels, also respecting the environment. Project outputs include: various training materials, Danube Region Geothermal Information Platform (interactive web-portal), Transnational Geothermal Strategy and Action Plans, tool-box tested at 3 cross-border pilot areas.

Achievements (EN):

AMONG THE ALTERNATIVES TO FOSSIL FUELS, GEOTHERMAL ENERGY IS ONE OF THE MOST PROMISING, OFFERING CLEAN, RELIABLE AND SAFE ENERGY FOR POWER PRODUCTION AND HEATING. DUE TO HIGH STARTUP COSTS, HOWEVER, GEOTHERMAL ENERGY USE IN THE DANUBE REGION REMAINS LIMITED. DARLINGE PROJECT AIMS TO CHANGE IT BY ENHANCING THE USE OF GEOTHERMAL RESOURCES IN THE HEATING SECTOR. The Pannonian Basin, extending across nine countries in Central and Eastern Europe, is well-known for its good geothermal potential due to its favourable geological conditions. Geothermal water has been known and used here in thermal baths since Roman times but a more systematic exploration and exploitation began only in the 19th century. Nowadays, bathing and balneology without any energy use is the most common type of thermal water use in the Danube region. Developing deep geothermal projects for energy utilization is considered risky due to the high upfront cost of drilling, coupled with a great uncertainty at the early stage of exploration. What can be done to make large-scale use of geothermal resources in the Danube region more attractive? TRANSNATIONAL COLLABORATION TOWARDS GOETHERMAL PROJECTS: The DARLINGe project aimed to enhance the efficient use of deep and still untapped regional geothermal resources going beyond the balneology of thermal springs. Based on a comprehensive analysis of the state-of-play of geothermal energy utilization in the project area covering about 95,000 km2, a joint transnational strategy was developed, creating an integrated transnational approach to the supply of geothermal energy in the heating sector. To advance collaboration and facilitate exchange of ideas, as well as to raise the awareness of policy and decision makers on the advantages of geothermal energy, especially as a real option for the decarbonisation of the heating sector, Danube Region Geothermal Information Platform was established. It allows to search information regarding geothermal parameters for the identification of favorable, but still unexplored potential geothermal reservoirs in the Danube region. The platform also serves as a tool-box, consisting of several online tools developed for those working in the field. For instance, an indicator-based benchmark system assessing current thermal water utilizations, helps stakeholders with sustainable management of deep geothermal resources. Or a decision support tool that uses a tree-like model of decisions and their possible consequences to support geothermal project developers step-by-step from initial stages of formulating a project idea through various stages of exploration, licensing, development and operation. Finally, the platform also features a geological risk mitigation scheme that helps developers to maximize the success rate of a geothermal well reaching the expected yield and temperature. GEOTHERMAL ENERGY IN THE DISTRICT HEATING OF SZEGED: The application of the methods and tools developed by the project was tested in three cross-border pilot areas. Szeged, a city of 162,593 inhabitants on the Hungarian–Serbian–Romanian border, was of them. The city and its vicinity have favourable geothermal conditions and traditions of using thermal water in spas. However, the sole energy-source of the local municipally-owned district heating company is imported natural gas. In 2015 the Szeged City Hall hired professionals from the Institute of Geology and Geography of the University of Szeged to initiate the integration of renewables – especially geothermal energy – into the city’s district heating system. In the long and delicate project development phase the assistance of the DARLINGe consortium has been instrumental. An in-depth heat market analysis was carried out based on the methodology developed in DARLINGe, and with that the investors and stakeholders were able to calculate the exact energy demand as well as the economics of the planned projects. This was matched with a site specific reservoir assessment to determine the highest possible yield and temperature of the water to be extracted. This assessment confirmed that the application of geothermal energy was definitely a viable option. Then, once again with the assistance of the DARLINGe consortium, a detailed feasibility study was conducted, based on which the Municipality of Szeged, the management of the district heating company, and the private investors decided to submit an application for EU funding in order to proceed with the project.

Expected Results (EN): Intensity of cooperation of key actors in the programme area in order to contribute to energy security and energy efficiency (survey based composite indicator)

Expected Outputs (EN):

As a result of DARLINGe activities and outputs (especially integration of the Transnational Danube Region Geothermal Strategy and Actions plans into relevant policies, as well as the regular use of the transnational tool-box and the DGRIP portal by target groups) sustainable exploitation of geothermal energy sources of the partner countries at a transnational scale will become a reality, barriers will be overcome for harnessing the available, but presently still untapped geothermal resources for the direct heat sector. Through dedicated activities the consortium will build capacities on transnational level, leading to market integration and sustainable resource management, which will not only initiate larger scale investments, increase the overall efficiency and improve the rate of return figures for future investment projects, but it will also raise the awareness of the local and the wider public regarding the benefits of such initiatives, as well as contributing to the revision of related policies and regulations. The enhanced cooperation of stakeholders from 6 countries through a TSF (to be continued in a Danube Region Geothermal Cluster after project closure) representing key actors of the entire geothermal sector will have a high impact on advanced institutional cooperation and policy dialogues at DR, but also at EU level, therefore the results are clearly linked to result indicator of 3.2 Intensity of cooperation to contribute to energy security and energy efficiency.
