The current (Linear) Economy is: Produce-use-dispose. The future belongs to the Circular Economy: produce-use-recycle or reuse. The new EC Circular Economy Strategy aims a "closing the loop" of product lifecycles through greater recycling and re-use, to bring benefits for society, environment and economy. So far 8 legislative proposals on waste have been adopted. Closing the loop of materials streams poses many challenges to research and innovation: increasing durability, reparability & recyclability of products (Extended Producer Responsibility), improving waste management and resource efficiency in industrial sectors, fostering industrial symbiosis and remanufacturing. MOVECO responds to this challenge and sets its objective to improve the framework conditions and policy instruments for eco innovation and the transition to a Circular Economy, fostering smart and sustainable growth and reducing disparities among the regions in the Danube Region (DR). MOVECO results include a strong transnational partnership competent to implement the Circular Economy & meet its targets. Based on a research on inefficiencies in innovation in current Extended Producer Responsibility schemes and related R&D services, we will develop a transnational strategy for the transistion to the Circular Economy (identification of possible materials streams for the DR) and roadmaps for their implementation in the different innovation regions. With new services and tools for eco-design and eco innovation (Circular Economy Toolbox), MOVECO will support new business models and research-business cooperation along new value chains. The MOVECO partnership comprises representatives of all target groups; policy-makers, business support organisations (BSO), R&D instituitons as well as civil society organisation: All committed to unleash the potential of the Circular Economy in the Danube Region, thus boosting competitiveness and ensuring security of supply, and leading to economic growth and new jobs. Achievements (EN):

CIRCULAR TOOLBOX FOR TRANSITIONING TO CIRCULAR ECONOMY: This Toolbox has been prepared to deliver extensive information and strategies for businesses to transition towards a circular economy in the Danube region. It shall help to improve the capacity of research and development, business support organizations, public bodies to implement circular economy and to contribute to sustainable economic growth. The Toolbox includes information, collaboration, qualification and financing tools. Many of these tools have been translated into different languages of the Danube region. MOBILE EXHIBITION ON CIRCULAR ECONOMY: Our MOVECO team has created a mobile exhibition on "The circular economy in the Danube region". It was travelling across four countries along the Danube region – Germany, Slovenia, Slovakia and Austria. Each country presented circular solutions with regional, national and international best practice examples in the field of circular economy until past June. TRANSNATIONAL STRATEGY AND CROSS-COUNTRY ROADMAPS: During the final conference in Linz, Austria, the project consortium presented the Transnational Strategy and cross-country Road Maps for a transition to the circular economy in the Danube region. The Transnational Strategy identifies material streams that are subject to circular economy schemes, whereas the cross-country Road Maps present ways to implement the strategy. FUTURE MODEL CIRCULAR ECONOMY - DISCOVER OUR PLATFORM: Are you already familiar with our recently launched online platform? It includes a virtual marketplace and helps interested persons, companies and research institutions from the countries of the Danube region to exchange products, materials and resources for reuse, and to build cooperation networks to promote the circular economy.

Expected Results (EN): Intensity of cooperation of key actors in the programme area in order to improve framework for research and innovation (composite indicator)

Expected Outputs (EN):

The transition to a resource-efficient economy requires new technologies, new value chains and overall new concepts and business models with a high level of cooperation and partnership. Through structured sharing and learning among relevant stakeholders, MOVECO will result in new strong partnership and network for resource-efficiency at cross-country and transnational level. It will deliver a comprehensive analysis on the efficiency of current Extended Producer Responsibility schemes in the DR, provide a transnational strategy on waste recovery along with three cross-country action plans for implementation. MOVECO will build competences and capacities among all stakeholders to cooperate and implement policy recommendations for the transition to the Circular Economy. The Circular Economy toolbox of MOVECO enforces research-business cooperation with focus on resource-recovery and efficiency; it will will offer new formats of cooperation and value chain creation tailored to regional and institutional framework conditions. MOVECO partners will become local Competence Centers on Circular Economy. We will provide a network and better infrastructure with eco innovation support/ policy instruments to meet the targets for the Circular Economy, contributing to sustainable competitiveness and better environmental performance. MOVECO will involve 50 policy-makers, 50 R&D organisations, 50 BSO and 25 civil sociey representatives, as well as at least 270 SMEs in collaboration activities.
