Description (EN):

The objective is to demonstrate the potential of reduction of GHG emissions in the steel sector by 30+%, by implementing a cost efficient breakthrough solution for the separation of CO2&CO unavoidably emitted. This will be achieved by processing in a pilot line carbon rich gases into 2 streams, one rich in CO and another one in CO2 that could be valorised into promising chemical building blocks in the future. We will also take into account the reuse of any by-products to further induce fossil fuels replacement and GHG emissions reductions.

Achievements (EN):

The Carbon2Value project has made significant process on the design and development of the pilot line to treat steel waste gases in view of valorizing CO. The DOW separation pilot has been started up. After the startup tests have been performed on the pilot to check the CO2 removal efficiency comparted to the model prediction. The initial tests were very promising and the performance in agreement with the expectations. Works have been performed to connect the GTS to the Lanzatech separation pilot. Test have been performed with the DOW pilot and Lanzatech GTS connected. Results have been very promising with the targetted CO/CO2 separation reached and CO-conversion by fermentation has been succesfully demonstrated. The DOW pilot testing has therefore been succesfully concluded with expected positive results. The GMS/PSA has been fully designed and ordered, integrated in the Steelanol plant. The construction of the Steelanol plant is now ongoing. Ground works have completed and steel construction 90% done. A dissemination strategy was developed and partially implemented to create awareness of the potential of the technology with different stakeholders. A identification set for Carbon2Value is supporting these dissemination activities. Two official events have been organised with stakeholders, press and policymakers present. The Carbon2Value pilot was officially launched on the 18th March 2019. ArcelorMittal and Dow Benelux are starting trials with a new pilot installation at the company premises of ArcelorMittal Gent, that separates carbon dioxide (CO2) and carbon monoxide (CO) from gases produced during the steelmaking process. The event was held in the presence of Philippe Muyters, Flemish Minister of Innovation, Anton van Beek, President and Chairman of the Board van Dow Chemicals Benelux, Manfred Van Vlierberghe, CEO ArcelorMittal Belgium and various local stakeholders and press. The construction of the GMS/PSA has been completed. Engineering and manuals have been completed and included as results of the project. The techno-economic study has progressed significantly; the Carbon2Value project has been included in an extensive study by the CCU Hub in the port of Ghent. At the University of Lille there were first successfully conducted experiments and produced results on performance parameters to capture CO2 from flue gas analog using Hydrate-Based Separation Process, which have resulted in multiple scientific papers.

Delivered Outputs (EN):

The Carbon2Value project focused on outputs which would prove a potential reduction of CO2 emissions (30-45%) across the major energy intensive steel sector by demonstrating an innovative technology to separate CO2 streams and valorise CO and potentially CO2 in the future. These outputs would support the study of two valorisation routes will be studied during the project; ethanol as a drop-in transportation fuel and synthetic naphtha as a drop-in chemical building block. Project Outputs: ● Operational and maintenance manuals of the pilot line (including GMS/PSA and CO/CO2 separation pilots; ● Demonstration report of the pilot line; (Summarising the key issues and main achievements of the pilot line demonstration and validation) ● CO2 stream on specifications (% of pure CO2 in the stream); Including a short report on the specifications of the CO2 separated stream and the final characterisation studies. ● CO stream on specifications (% of pure CO in the stream); Including a short report on the specifications of the CO separated stream. ● Life Cycle Assessment; ● Technology economic feasibility study; ● Pilot line for the demonstration and valorisation of CO2/CO separation.
