Ethical capability is an important part of a healthcare professional’s competence. The WHO Global Competency Model states several core qualities that are related to ethical competence, for example active listening and respecting others’ individuality according to the ethical and legal framework and personal values. Unfortunately, about 30 % of patients´ complaints concern unethical behavior of the health care staff: there are problems with ethical sensitivity and respectful communication. Today ethical competence has an important role, due to for example increased number of patients with different cultural backgrounds, like immigrants and refugees. Including these ethical aspects in nursing students´ education is a totally new perspective, but extremely important. The overall objective of the project is to create three common study courses (6 ETCS) in order to develop more aligned VET programmes and increase ethical competence of nursing students in the Central Baltic region. As a result, the courses are embedded in each partner organisations curricula: Turku University of Applied Sciences, Riga Medical College of the University of Latvia and The Swedish Red Cross University College. Common courses and teaching methods ensure the more harmonized education level in the region and also more harmonized competence level of nurses working in these countries. Development of the ethical competence of nursing students is done with help of multi-various methods, like simulation and practical training. Simulation environment is a safe and effective way for students to learn and practice complex ethical skills. The patients and health care providers in the Central Baltic region need more nurses who possess equal and ethically competitive nursing care. This can be achieved by building more aligned curricula in nursing education. Improved ethical skills serve the needs of healthcare providers, promote the mobility of workforce and increase the quality of patient care.

Expected Results (EN): R4.2. Increased share of aligned vocational education and training (VET) programmes in the Central Baltic region

Expected Outputs (EN):

The main results answer directly to the programme result indicator by increasing the share of aligned VET programmes in the region. The main outcome are the courses 1-3 (6 ETCS). As a result of the project the courses will be embedded in partner organizations’ curricula. Common courses and more aligned teaching methods will ensure the more harmonized education level in the region and also more harmonized competence level of nurses working in these countries. Course 1 Basic ethics in health care (2 ETCS) consists of the basic theories of ethics. Learning methods are online lectures, web seminar and practice trainings. The evaluation of students´ ethical competence is based on test and evaluation criteria (0-5). Course 2 Ethical Coffee Room (1 ETC) is arranged during the clinical practice placements in hospital or nursing homes. The students will evaluate and discuss together in Ethical Coffee Room (electronical platform environment developed for the purpose, ECR) about ethical issues and dilemmas what they meet during their practice. The mentors and teachers will supervise the discussions in ECR and give example cases, perspectives and advices to think about ethical questions and solutions. The assessment is based on active participation in discussion in ECR (accepted/not accepted). Course 3 Ethics in simulations (3 ETCS) consists of six simulation practices. The students have preliminary exercises before the simulation sessions and afterwards they reflectively discuss their own ethical sensitivity and competence. The students also practice giving feedback on ethical activity for the peers. The assessment is based on accepted participation in simulations (accepted/not accepted). The whole material will be compiled together to an eHandbook. This handbook consists of various learning materials (theory lectures in videos, scenarios, ECR, exercises, etc.) and is freely available. All the VET institutions are able to use these courses as a part of their curricula.
