Many of the children living in vulnerable living environments in families and/or in the residential child care settings tend to be in need of psychiatric treatment as well as child protection services. There is an urgent demand for closer collaboration between health and social sector in order to ensure more effective work in child welfare settings. However, it is widely known that collaboration between child protection services and mental health services is not working well and the outcomes for vulnerable children are poor. It is a regrettable fact that child protection services, particularly residential care, suffer the lack of mental health services and paradoxically, children taken into care don’t always receive the out-patient psychiatric help they are entitled to. Children living in residential care are the most vulnerable ones and at the moment systems in partner countries are not meeting their needs well. The common problem is that the professional expertise stays in silos; professionals act in separate sectors and thus effective interprofessional networking is difficult to establish. Each care profession has a different working culture, values and behaviors. One promising way in helping children and adolescents is an acute team work model. It is still fairly new approach in youth psychiatric services in Finland and not existing at all in Estonia. Within this framework ACUCARE´s objective is to develop a vocational training e-course for nursing-, social work and social educator students in order to create the more aligned joint VET programmes among partner countries. The e-course concerns interprofessional psychiatric acute team work and includes two parts: family work in open care (5 ECTS) and residential child care in foster care (5 ECTS). Project develops new professional skills and innovative ways of working. The e-course increases collaboration between students and practitioners working on the borders of the different systems and different countries.

Expected Results (EN): R4.2. Increased share of aligned vocational education and training (VET) programmes in the Central Baltic region

Expected Outputs (EN):

The project’s main result is a new 10 (5+5) ECTS interprofessional vocational training e-course, including e-learning materials and an e-curriculum manual for the use of different VET organisations. The e-course consists of two themes:1) family work in ‘open care’ (5 ECTS)2) residential child care in foster care (5 ECTS). In Family work part the main focus is in working within families to promote educational partnership between parents and professionals; to bring together regional family services, such as maternity and child health clinics, early childhood education and care services, school and local family and early support services to help families. The main focus in residential child care in foster care is to enhance the skills for an integrated care approach; to incorporate the interprofessional expertise and advance the existing child protection and mental health services better.E-course will be used for basic preparation of social worker students in University of Tartu, for basic preparation of nursing students (family work in open care) and nurse education (residential child care in foster care) in THCC and for nursing and social educator students as a part of already existing15 ECTS optional studies in TUAS. The e-course is especially designed based on the needs raised from the child protection field. During these two courses, the professional competencies and skills will be increased and interprofessional acute team work will be created for the benefit of students and target groups. Students will also learn to be aware of the other profession´s competencies. As a result both social educators and nurses can respect and value each other’s work more. The e-course is especially designed based on the needs from the child welfare and child protection field.This main result of the project contributes directly to the programme result indicator by increasing the share of aligned VET programmes in the Central Baltic region.
