Description (EN):

New management models to balance preservation and exploitation of protected areas (Natura 2000) has become a priority in most EU regions. IMPACT partnership includes five regions and a large variety of protected areas across Europe with differences in terms of local capacities and potential. The aim is to have a better understanding of patterns followed, development potential and opportunities to change policies related to the management of protected areas through interregional learning. Stakeholder groups meetings, interregional events, study visits and forums will help us transform this potential and opportunities into growth, income and green jobs in and around protected areas. Natura 2000 sites could be turned around more sustainable and efficient if improved policy instruments and approaches are adopted. Besides, this approach guarantees also sustainability of results beyond project lifetime. Communication strategy includes support material, online presence and public relations activities to ensure dissemination of project successes and achievements beyond partners’ regions. IMPACT expected results and changes are, among others, improving spatial and management tools for Natura 2000 sites, increasing competences of different target groups, raising awareness about natural assets (risks and potential), increasing tourism flows in low and medium season and involving young people in biodiversity preservatiion. Policymakers, stakeholder groups and partners’ staff will play a key role in the interregional learning process, the development of action plans and the improvement of policy instruments addressed, and therefore, in the project successful implementation. In addition, general public, local communities and particularly groups at risk of discrimination will benefit from IMPACT project results and outputs. Monitoring of action plans implementation (Phase 2) is an added-value for projects as it will make it possible to measure the results in territories.

Achievements (EN):

In terms of activities, the project has organised a total of 52 policy learning events. It has also identified 38 good practices, produced 5 action plans and led to the increased capacity of 96 people. In terms of results, the project has succeeded in improving 4 regional development policies for a total amount of funds influenced of EUR 492,050. 00.

Expected Results (EN):

IMPACT project overall objective is to introduce lessons learnt from the interregional exchange of experience process into new management and exploitation strategies that balance measures of preservation with sustainable exploitation of protected areas assets. To attain this goal efficiently, project partners have the following sub-objectives closely related to regional policy instruments to be improved: - To minimise threats and key pressures on protected areas and ecosystem services. - To preserve biodiversity, particularly in Natura 2000 sites. - To promote the strategic importance of areas of natural attraction, in terms of natural and cultural heritage and development potential. - To achieve better results in protected areas management and contribute to increase sustainable tourism flows, particularly low/medium season tourism, and therefore, create new employment opportunities. - To support capacity building of partners’ staff and stakeholders groups (in terms of knowledge/skills/expertise). - To promote innovation in environmental tools/strategies to raise awareness among population, stakeholders and policy makers and involve them in preserving and developing natural heritage of protected areas. IMPACT project will follow an integrated approach to achieve this overall objective and sub-objectives, assuming that thematic coherence, continuity and good interrelation between the activities is important for a successful learning process.

Expected Outputs (EN):

The main expected output is obviously the development of 5 Action Plans to improve 5 policy instruments related to new strategies / models to balance preservation and sustainable exploitation of protected areas. Project partners expect to achieve this goal through: - Implementing new projects to be funded under regional operational programmes addressed. - Changing, that is, improving management of policy instruments (topics concerned by IMPACT project). As stated in other sections of the application form, IMPACT expected results are: - To improve spatial and management tools for Natura 2000 sites. - To increase competences of stakeholders, protected areas managers and project partners’ staff in relation to management of protected areas and promoting sustainable development. - To submit new projects by protected areas under regional operational programmes. - To raise awareness about natural assets of protected areas and their development potential. - To increase low and medium season tourism flow in protected areas. - To increase the number of protected areas. - To raise awareness among population, landowners, employers, policy makers and other relevant stakeholders with the aim to involve them in activities related to biodiversity and natural heritage preservation.
