Small mountain villages such as the Lechtaler Seitentalgemeinde Hinterhornbach and communities away from the touristic hot spots have been struggling for years with population decline. In order to offer not only jobs, but rather a secure livelihood and to stop emigration, it needs high-quality tourism products and a clear positioning based on the available resources. The strongest feature of these mountain villages is their portal function for the high alpine region with its refuge and alpine climbing tracks. The feasibility of this product was tested in a small project. The "Grenzgänger" route connects the mountain villages of Schattwald, Hinterhornbach / Tyrol and Hinterstein / Allgäu in six stages (with the inclusion of refuge huts). In particular, the encounter of golden eagle, groundhog, ibex, chamois and black grouse as a natural heritage must be protected. However, this requires comprehensive environmental measures (setting the path) in alpine terrain and uniform signage / marking. Due to the altitude, bad weather periods and nature conservation, the construction time window is very short. A uniform appearance and marketing transform the "Grenzgänger" into an independent and internationally perceivable product. Cross-border cooperation between the geographically involved municipalities and DAV-sections results in an intensive transfer of know-how (signage, product management, etc.). As a result the regions can also experience a long-term self-sustaining economic upturn and protect natural heritage.

Kleine Bergdörfer wie die Lechtaler Seitentalgemeinde Hinterhornbach und Gemeinden abseits der touristischen Hot Spots (Bsp. Schattwald, Tirol, u. auf deutscher Seite Hinterstein, Ortsteil von Bad Hindelang) haben seit Jahren mit Bevölkerungsrückgängen zu kämpfen. Auch wirtschaftlich/touristisch geraten sie zunehmend ins Abseits. Um nicht nur Arbeitsplätze, sondern vielmehr eine gesicherte Existenzgrundlage zu bieten und die Abwanderungen zu stoppen, braucht es hochwertige touristische Produkte und eine klare Positionierung basierend auf den vorhandenen Ressourcen. Stärkstes Alleinstellungsmerkmal dieser Bergdörfer ist ihre Portalfunktion für den hochalpinen Raum mit seinen Schutzhütten und alpinen Steigen. Die Machbarkeit dieses Produkts wurde im Rahmen eines Kleinprojekts geprüft. Der Rundweg richtet sich an bergerfahrene Mehrtageswanderer. Der "Grenzgänger" verbindet in sechs Etappen die Bergdörfer Schattwald, Hinterhornbach/Tirol und Hinterstein/Allgäu (unter Einbindung von Schutzhütten). Besonders dabei sind das Antreffen von Steinadler, Murmeltier, Steinbock, Gemse und Birkhuhn als Naturerbe, die geschätzt u. geschützt werden müssen. Erstmalig für einen alpinen Steig wird eine Zertifizierung angestrebt. Dazu bedarf es allerdings umfassender Umweltmaßnahmen (Wegeinwertsetzung) im alpinen Gelände und einer einheitlichen Beschilderung/Markierung. Aufgrund der Höhenlagen, Schlechtwetterperioden u. des Naturschutzes ist das Bauzeitfenster sehr kurz (siehe Stellungn. Laufzeit Grenzgänger). Ein einheitliches Erscheinungsbild u. Marketing machen aus dem Grenzgänger ein eigenständiges u. international wahrnehmbares Produkt. Durch die grenzüberschreitende Kooperation der geografisch beteiligten Gemeinden und DAV-Sektionen wird ein intensiver Know-how-Transfer erreicht (Beschilderung, Produktmanagement etc.). Dadurch können auch periphere Regionen einen sich langfristig selbst tragenden wirtschaftlichen Aufschwung erfahren und das Naturerbe schützen.

Cross-border commuters – high alpine stage hiking trail: Visitor guidance is the commandment of the hour in the alpine area. For years – and once again reinforced by the coronavirus pandemic – there has been a high tourist pressure on domestic and nearby alpine destinations. In the project “Border Walkers”, the project partners created an offer with well signposted and secured, clearly visible paths, which guides the hikers and thus protects and preserves the unique nature in the Allgäu High Alpine Nature Reserve and the Natura 2000 area Vilsalpsee as well as along the border course around the Hochvogel. A total of 65 kilometres of cross-border mountain paths were made permanently accessible and thus implemented an evaluation measure of this magnitude unknown to date in the Alpine region.
