SCALE-UP supported the greening of the economy through better exploitation of Clean Tech innovations, including international uptake of novel green products and services by large corporate buyers. While the North Sea Region is a global leader in Clean Tech, too few Clean Tech innovations reach international markets. Large buyers may be unaware of innovations available across the region, or find start-ups unsuitable as suppliers. Innovators have difficulties accessing large buyers abroad or have little experience with corporate procurement processes. In SCALE-UP, Clean Tech cluster organisations in five countries offered a set of new transnational services enabling the development of business between innovators and buyers. At the core were tailored Meet the Buyer events, capacity building for innovators focused on reaching corporate buyers, and a voucher system to support international travel.

Achievements (EN):

Over 1,000 organisations (969 SMEs, 92 large buyers and public sector bodies) participated in transnational SCALE-UP activities, proving the effectiveness of the methodology and the willingness of stakeholders in the North Sea Region to work together. SCALE-UP reduced emissions in 42 locations by more than 50% on average. During the project, carbon emission savings amounted to 248,000 tonnes of CO2 per year. One example is Woonstad, a housing association in Rotterdam looking to make their dwellings more energy-efficient. Through SCALE-UP, Woonstad contracted SME innovator OverMorgen to provide an application that connected 624 dwellings to a district heating network. The result was a 77% reduction in CO2 emissions per year, an annual saving of over 900 tonnes. At least €13.6 million of private and public funds were unlocked for sustainable innovations. All investments concerned solutions procured by large buyers in the North Sea Region and/or delivered by SME based in the region (in most cases both).
