North Sea Region (NSR) economic activity and growth are mostly found in urban areas. Rural NSR regions experience population decline and negative economic growth. The BIOCAS project expects revitalizing and greening of rural areas go hand in hand. BIOCAS will develop rural areas of the NSR into smart specialized regions for integrated and local valorization of biomass.13 Commercial running Bio-Cascade-Alliances (BCA’s) will be piloted, evaluated and actively shared in the involved regions. These proven concepts will accelerate adoption of high to low value bio-cascading technologies and businesses in rural regions.The project connects 18 regional initiatives around technologies, processes, businesses for the conversion of biomass streams. The initiatives collaborate in a thematic approach: Through engineering, value chain assessments, BCA’s building, partners tackle challenges that are shared by rural areas. I.e. unsustainable biomass use, a mineral surplus and soil degradation, deprivation of potentially valuable resources, and limited involvement of regional businesses and SMEs in existing bio-economy developments.The 18 partners are strongly embedded in regional settings, connected to many local partners. They will align stakeholders in BCA’s that would not have cooperated without BIOCAS interventions.Triple helix, science, business and governmental input will realize inclusive lasting bio cascade businesses, transforming costly waste to resources and viable business.

Achievements (EN):

BIOCAS set out to develop rural areas in North Sea Region into smart specialized regions through integrated and local valorization of biomass. The aim was to generate economic, societal and ecological benefits and prosperity. The tool we decides to use were: 1. Create inspiring examples of green growth in rural areas, 2. Involve target groups, 3. Develop smart use of resources, 4. Reduce CO2 emissions, and 5. Improve soil fertility. At the end of the project, it is very satisfying to realize that in the big picture, this is exactly what we did. Biocascading alliances (BCAs) have been the 'basecamp' for partners to develop their products or processes. In these BCAs different types of organizations worked together (eg. SMEs, universities/schools, research institutes and public organizations) and attracted new/potential partners by their enthusiasm, best practices and findings. Therefore supporting industrial transition towards a resource efficient economy, promoting green growth, eco-innovation and environmental performance management in the public and private sectors. By valorising biomass and working in biocascading chains to reach this, the project has tested and piloted various ways of promoting resource efficiency. By focusing on products and processes to substitute less ecofriendly products and processes (eg. bioplastics instead of 'normal' plastic, biogas to make electricity instead of natural gas or coals), partners contribute to the protection of the environment. Some good examples of activities in the BCAs: farmers events that were organized in the Partnership Lolland Falster, field trials and demo days in various places in Lower Saxony, the biocups BCA where an SME worked together with creative industry, universities for applied sciences and producers of moulds and materials, various events where the public could experience products that were developed within BIOCAS and several meetings of partners and interested industry or SMEs to talk about upscaling. The more we moved to the end of the project, the more results were shared with the world and this led to more cooperation. Within the project, but partners have also informed parties in their external chains and started looking into possible new partnerships. During the project we learned that circular, cascade business cases are very often immature, vulnerable and risky business cases, and more time is needed for the green transition mindset to settle in society in general, as the new sustainable value chains rely on either public financing or consumers ready to help the new products become economically sustainable. Partners are more than willing to continue and expand the journey they started in BIOCAS after the project has been finalized. And that might be the biggest result we have reached with this project!
