Description (EN):

Greenhouse production of fresh fruit, vegetables and ornamentals is a successful, innovative component of the NSR economy with an output of €9 bn p.a. and directly employing 500.000 persons. It embraces 10,000 SMEs with a high value supply chain. It helps provide sustainable and healthy food to consumers. However, the producers in the NSR are facing challenges, such as high reliance on energy (CO2 output 6.6MT), water and a low use of renewable energy. Eco-innovations in new or improved control methods/services is needed to reduce the use of resources (energy, water and chemicals) and to decrease the CO2 emission. SMARTGREEN will use novel Big Data analysis of climate and production data to pinpoint unnecessary energy use and to improve the climate control. This will combined with research and practical demonstrations in commercial greenhouses secure a leap towards a greener and energy efficient production system. SMARTGREEN connects experienced research groups, leading SMEs and supporting companies to promote the greening of the NSR. By fostering innovative eco-enterprises, we can ensure greener growth, whilst reducing the environmental foot print significantly: less pollution, lower emissions and longer-lasting use of resources such as 15% less energy use and 10% higher energy effeciency. The transnational nature of SMARTGREEN will stimulate the development and adoption of eco-friendly and low-carbon products, green services and processes in NSR greenhouse industry.

Achievements (EN):

The results from the Smartgreen done at several of the beneficiaries with different lighting aspects and plant species show that the use of LED can reduce energy consumption to a high degree. The results have increased the uptake of LED installation, especially under the actual situation of energy costs. But not only the low energy consumption is the big advantage. Another large profit is the control of light quality. For example flower colours are often much intense with high amount of blue light and flower development often can be accelerated with farred light and the use of UV-light furthermore can affect the quality and taste of the herbs . SDU closely collaborated with Aarhus University, PCG, and PCS to develop an Intelligent Energy efficient greenhouse management system. PCG and PCS tested the concept at research facilities and selected growers. The Dynagrow strategy saves 3.35 euros/m² in lighting costs. The experimen indicate a significant reduction in electricity costs of approximately 20% without compromising the crop quality. In butterhead lettuce using Dynagrow it reduced the supplemental light with 8,3 % compared to the standard lighting strategy. PCS invested in two closed multilayer growing systems with trials and demonstrations were set up with 11 different front-runner SMEs to explore the possibilities for their production. They are being guided in their transition to a multilayer farm. Lighting trials were not only set up in greenhouses, but also in closed environments and working with Urban Crop Solutions that also explored the potential of a closed environment for propagation of crops for later cultivation in greenhouse environment. A sensor system was developed at OH suitable for contactless and automated measurement and scoring of plants. The system can determine plant height with an accuracy of approximately 5 mm. The measuring system operates on rollers located at the edge of the bench, allowing unrestricted use of the surface. TNO acquired climate and growth data from a Norwegian greenhouse to derive trends and forecasting of plant growth and yield using existing data analysis tools called SONNET and developed A Common Greenhouse Ontology that defines common concepts and relations in the greenhouse domain, which currently is being used by greenhouse companies. An online registration system for growers to gather their data on production, climate control and energy and discussed in network groups to decide on adaptations of their production strategy. Data were shared with our project partners as a basis for development of new ICT- based control tools. NIBIO developed a production method using artificial light that increased the yield of tomatoes and cucumbers from 40 to 120 kg per m-2 per year. We used sensors developed by our partners to document plant growth as well as water uptake and evaporation. Results showed that lighting from the top of the plants was more effective that between the plants and the use of LED's was more profitable compared to HPS. NIBIO demonstrated an control system that removed heat and humidity while ventilation windows remained closed. A reduction of 50% of energy from fossil sources can be achieved also in connection with a direct air capture (DAC) system supplying CO2. This resulted in an upscaling of the system on 2 ha at a commercial grower. Throughout the project, University of Lincoln have made significant advancements in the field of crop yield prediction and greenhouse control using data from other partners. They have successfully developed innovative machine learning, deep learning, and optimization algorithms specifically tailored for this purpose.
