CHALLENGES AND INVERVENTION OBJECTIVES: TOUREST will support the development and proliferation of sustainable tourism policies & practices to increase water efficiency in ADRION coastal areas, seeking to: a) minimise the negative impacts of tourism activities on natural heritage, and b) protect increasingly scarce water resources. These focal interventions points will directly contribute to the implementation of the 4th EUSAIR pillar. ΜΑΙΝ TARGET GROUPS: Territorial public authorities & bodies responsible for policies on water efficiency, environment, and tourism SMEs & enterprises in the tourism sector. Key stakeholders, such as water infrastructure providers, business support organisations, and environmental agencies. OVERALL APPROACH AND MAIN OUTPUTS: TOUREST partners will employ a comprehensive and integrated studying, testing, and transferability approach, rooted in transnational cooperation, involving all aforementioned target groups and stakeholders. Its main outputs are: - A joint ADRION area strategy and resources for public authorities to monitor & assess sustainable tourism water management (O.T1.1). - Demonstration of water use monitoring and assessment impact on increasing the sustainability level of the tourism sector (O.T2.1). - Action plans (x6) for public authorities and tourism stakeholders of the partners’ areas (O.T3.1). To this end, TOUREST will produce the following main deliverables: - Studies and policy recommendations for public authorities to support the integration of sustainable tourism water management measures, and for tourism enterprises to adopt best management practices in day to day operations (supporting O.T1.1, O.T3.1). - Water sustainability indicators & evaluation criteria to measure tourism sector performance on water efficiency (supporting O.T1.1). - An innovative digital tool for SMEs & enterprises to monitor, compare, and self-assess water efficiency performance & efforts, and for public authorities to assess the overall territorial situation (supporting OT2.1). - Capacity building resources and policy workshops on sustainable tourism water management (supporting O.T3.1).

Expected Results (EN): Level of capacity for the stakeholders in the fields of natural and cultural heritage protection and tourism to sustainably valorise natural and cultural heritage as a growth asset

Expected Outputs (EN):

TOUREST MAIN RESULTS: 1) Enable tourism sector enterprises & SMEs operating in the TOUREST area to monitor and self assess their water sustainability performance, thus taking steps to sustainable tourism water management. 2) Improve knowledge & policy transfer capacity of public authorities to integrate sustainable tourism water management into territorial plans and measures addressed to tourism sector stakeholders. CONTRIBUTION TO PROGRAMME RESULT INDICATOR: Through project activities, tourism SMEs in the partnership areas will develop increased sustainable water management capability, by understanding water consumption patterns and adopting smart water saving measures to improve the sustainability of their activities. This will be made possible through the development and validation of sustainability indicators, evaluation criteria, and a performance monitoring and self assessment digital tool addressed directly to SMEs & enterprises, enabling them to monitor, compare & grade performance on sustainable tourism water management. In addition, the learning and knowledge resources & policy workshops will support public bodies to promote awareness & mobilise tourism sector stakeholders to improve both individually and collectively their sustainable tourism water management performance. It is expected that more than 500 enterprises in the tourism sector will improve their efforts to self assess their water sustainability in the first year after the project’s implementation (i.e. monitor water sustainability, and adopt water efficiency measures, solutions and relevant staff training). It is also expected that more than 300 local public authorities in the partnership countries will improve knowledge and efforts to transfer the sustainable tourism water management approach into day to day development and implementation of policy plans and measures relevant to tourism sector stakeholders, in the period following the project’s end.
