Seafaring and maritime operations are under constant development; digitalisation, safety and renewed environmental regulations being the most significant factors requiring readiness for change from maritime education providers. The global nature of seafaring also necessitates education to take place in an international context. This project aims to connect maritime simulator centers across the Baltic Sea. Simulator connectivity enables students to train within same virtual learning environment where multi-cultural communication and teamworking are integral parts of the training. Currently crossborder education between maritime education institutes and their simulator centres does not exist. Combining the best expertise into the project partnership, technical expertise in simulators of EMERA, specialization in simulator training structures of EKAMI, proven expertise of Xamk and Aboa Mare in simulation pedagogy and port management expertise in IVKHK enables creating joint maritime vocational education which measures up with the requirements set by labour markets. First tasks in the project is to conduct labour market investigation to elaborate set objectives. Then technical development of simulators to establish connection between simulation centres takes place. In parallel new education infrastructure is formed, guidelines for harmonized simulator trainings are created. New training methods, tools, e-learning platforms and best practices for simulation pedagogy are examined. Joint education is designed and demonstrated in course pilots themed in accordance with labor market needs. Joint programmes and learning materials developed are integrated into the existing curriculums. New transboundary simulator learning environment and deepened collaboration between education institutions provide maritime, port and logistics students most modern education improved in quality and safety, extending the employment opportunities of the students.

Expected Outputs (EN):

This project will be increasing the student’s knowledge of future requirements and increases possibility to be employed internationally. •This project will be increase the student’s knowledge and skills from the perspective of seafarers and port’s specialists educaton serving international shipping companies and increases possibility to be sufficiently employed internationally. •Increase the quality of international education. •Increase the competence of simulator center related personnel. •Increase the capacity of maritime education institutions offering international education. Almost 90 % of the EU’s external freight trade is seaborne. Each year, more than 400 million passengers embark and disembark at European ports. Overall, maritime industries are an important source of employment and income for the European economy. Shipping sector and ports are carrying out rapid technological and procedural changes in coming years (e.g. smart ports, autonomus vessels, new fuels, VDES etc). Most of these developments are carried out under different EU projects (STM Validation, EfficienSea2, MUNIN, Twin-Port, E-Ferry, e-Freight, Green Port, LNG in Baltic Sea ports etc). All these developments are crucial for the Baltic Sea Region to be competitive on the regional and global shipping. Meanwhile developing shipping and ports sector there has paid relatively little attention to the improvement of internationally coherent and competitive maritime education and training aiming to serve labour market needs. In order to safeguard a modern and internationally competitive shipping and to create growth in the shipping sector, it has become crucial to internationalize and strengthen maritime education and training focusing at sea and shore. Likewise, there is a need to upgrade the international part of the maritime education quality aiming to serve essentially international shipping sector at sea and onshore, mainly in ports.
