Energy efficiency as the strategic term is the priority in both countries that are facing same issues regarding energy efficiency and renewable energy sources. Energy demands for public buildings, high energy consumption and costs, lack of general knowledge, different obstacles regarding law regulations, level of technical preparedness for project implementation, lack of cross border connection and cooperation, and many other obstacles stand in the way for successful implementation of larger scale initiatives for comprehensive approach in dealing with these issues. Combination of EE measures with the usage of RES is the correct approach to successful implementation of EE project. There is a common case of a wrong perspective in field of energy efficiency, where people reach for RES before reducing the energy demand of the building. Throughout the implementation of this project, Serbian partners will follow the path for successful implementation of EE projects of Croatian partner, by learning from their experience in order to achieve same or better results and set the ground for future similar projects in Serbia. In this way, we are expecting to change the perception and to influence on strategic planning of decision makers in both countries. There are several aims of the project; education of wider spectrum of target groups, from students, general public, to decision makers about the right approach to EE and RES in order to increase the capacities and effectiveness of implementation of successful EE and RES projects. Project main outputs will be the EE reconstructions of schools in Croatia and Serbia with application of RES, with transfer of knowledge through educational activities. Transfer of knowledge, experiences and deriving of cooperation on several levels will strengthen the cross-border cooperation between different stakeholders (decision makers, students, general public and entrepreneurs) and contribute to promotion of EE and RES in cross-border region.

Achievements (EN):

ES GEES, shortened for Education for Sustainability – Green and Energy Efficient Schools, is dedicated to finding the right approach in implementing energy efficient measures and combining them with renewable energy sources. In the past 30 months, partners contributed to reconstruction of two schools in Osijek and Novi Sad and organized a campaign that informed Croatia and Serbia’s cross-border community about renewable energy sources. In particular, partners raised the energy efficiency of two public schools by installing a photovoltaic power plant in the elementary school Ljudevit Gaj in Osijek, allowing the school to produce clean energy and generate savings. In Novi Sad’s Technical school “Mileva Maric-Einstein” partners installed a pellet heating system, which will heat the school greenhouse and also showcase principles of circular economy to students. Partners of ES GEES made students aware of advantages of using renewable energy sources in the most practical way. By reconstructing two schools, ES GEES ensured that their achievements remain visible for generations of students to see.

Expected Results (EN): Energy consumption by public buidings in the programme area.

Expected Outputs (EN):

The main results are the increase of knowledge and promotion of energy efficiency and renewable energy sources, decrease of the energy consumption by implementation of the EE reconstructions in combination with the use of renewable energy sources. Besides the reconstruction, project will show the possibility of reduction of energy consumption by changing of the users behavior and the results will be monitored, measured and evaluated according to methodology from the before mentioned EU directives. The cross border cooperation between two participating countries will be encouraged through different activities that will support the positive changes in sector of energy efficiency and the most important thing is that the results will be measurable and visible.
