Description
Description (EN): The green banks of the Danube in Romania-Bulgaria cross border area, the woods, wetlands and islands offer an opportunity for diverse outdoor activities and by networking of different stakeholders, diverse products can be developed.
Cross-border offers allow local tourists to meet neighboring cultures and nature and give visitors from distant countries the unique opportunity to discover a whole new region consisting of various landscapes, ethnicities and traditions. The project partners identified two new activities that combine green tourism with healthy activities whilst with small costs. These activities had a significant growth in the last years and could have a major impact on the cross border region, especially the Danube region. The proposed activities are hiking and marathons on the natural and cultural sites that the cross border region has to offer.
Common hiking standards, which will be introduced to stakeholders from Romania and Bulgaria, aim to draw hiking and accommodation conditions closer to tourist expectations, nevertheless preserving the countries’ unique appearance and atmosphere. The marathons will promote the region, a healthy lifestyle and will attract tourists in the region by organizing joint events on important natural and cultural areas.
The total budget of 498884.65 euro will be invested in creation of the 2 integrated tourism products and elaboration of 2 common strategies valorizing (including raising awareness) the cultural and natural heritage through its restoration and promotion for sustainable economic uses, for pilot actions proposed to be developed and necessary equipment to implement them.
During the project implementation an interactive web portal will be constructed that will support both tourism products along with a mobile application with trails (hiking/marathon) and other means of communication. The web portal can improve access to information for both potential stakeholders and tourists. The mobile application is the new mechanism that the project will use to attract young people and foreign tourist because it helps to deliver the information much faster and efficient than the conventional ways. The project partners will procure all the technical equipment necessary for the green and healthy tourism products to be practiced in complete safety and leisure: equipment for camping (tents, open tents, sleeping bags, camping furniture and equipment, cooking equipment, head light) and equipment for organizing outdoor events – marathons (banners, pop-up display, Timing system), facilities for runners (toilets, water and food stands, Photo tagging services), warm-up crew, sound system, open tent, Traffic Cones, Course Signage, Start/Finish Line Signage and minivan with minimum 2 seats in the limit mentioned in Annex C for motor vehicles that will carry all the technical equipment and will be used for technical support. Pilot actions will be developed in order to put in practice the project indicators and ensure the sustainability. Both tourism products will be promoted and developed using 2 common strategies valorizing the cultural and natural heritage.
Considering the programme output indicators related to the project expected results, the project foreseen: 2 new integrated tourism products created covering 4,65% of the programme output indicator for this call for proposals (I9) and 2 common strategies developed covering 8,7% of the programme output indicator for this call for proposals (I10). The project budget, 498884.65 euro, in comparison with the financial indicator for PA2 represents only 1,71% from the output indicator for this call for proposals (I12). The activities developed during and after the project implementation period will increase the number of tourist overnights in the region up to 5140, covering 0.97% from the programme result indicator for this priority axis.

Expected Results (EN): R2.1 - Number of tourist overnights in the CBC region
Expected Outputs (EN): The project is proposing a contribution to the achievement of programme result indicator quantifying 5140 overnights in the CBC region generated by the creation of the new integrated tourism products in the region, covering 0,97% of the programme result indicator. The financial allocation of the project reported to the programme output indicator is 0,93% and to the present call is 1,71%.
The number of overnights is the result of the pilot actions/experimental actions organized in the programme region and after the project implementation period, during the sustainability stage.
Several pilot actions are foreseen to be developed using the equipment purchased, equal number of actions will be organized on each side of the border with the support and involvement of all project partners.
Totally, 10 pilot actions will be developed generating 640 overnights in the region.
4 Experimental marathons widely promoted involving Romanian, Bulgarian tourists (domestic tourists) and foreign tourists (if requests will be received), 2 on the Romanian and 2 on the Bulgarian side of the Danube, totalizing 400 overnights.
- 100 participants/marathon X 2 marathons organized by RO Beneficiaries = 200 overnights.
- 100 participants/marathon X 2 marathons organized by BG Beneficiary = 200 overnights.
6 Experimental hiking expeditions (3 day each) will be organized involving domestic tourists and foreign tourists (if requests will be received), 3 on the Romanian and 3 on the Bulgarian side of the Danube, totalizing 240 overnights.
- 20 participants/expedition X 3 expeditions organized by RO Beneficiaries X 2 nights = 120 overnights.
- 20 participants/expedition X 3 expeditions organized by BG Beneficiary X 2 nights = 120 overnights.
The number of overnights will be increased during the sustainability stage, when minimum 2 marathons per year (one in RO and one in BG) and minimum 2 hiking expeditions per year (one in RO and one in BG) will be organized.
Minimum 2 marathons per year (one in RO and one in BG) will gather 400 participants per year. For 5 years, 2000 participants will join the marathons organized in the eligible area of the programme and at least half of them will overnight in the programme region, generating 1000 overnights.
Minimum 2 hiking expeditions per year (one in RO and one in BG) will gather 100 participants per year. For 5 years, 500 participants will join the hiking expeditions generating 500 overnights in the eligible area of the programme.
Total overnights that will be promoted by the project partners: 1500 overnights during 5 years after the project completion.
The tourism products that will be promoted by the project can be organised by the project partners or could be done individually or by organised groups. For a marathon or hiking trip there is no need of an authorized guide and can be done by everybody as long as they respect the indications made available by the project outputs. We estimate a total overnights generated by the project by making available all the project outputs (equipment, web portal, mobile application, pilot actions, etc) of around 3000 overnights during 5 years after the project completion.
Total overnights during the project monitoring period: 4500
