Description (EN):

An emergence of new mosquito-borne diseases (MBDs) is increasingly becoming a major public health threat in the Danube region and whole of Europe. The consequences of climate changes are evidenced by frequent floods that provide excellent preconditions for the increase of mosquito population in the region since mosquitos need water for their development. Since 2012 the project area faces a serious problem related to the presence of West Nile virus causing West Nile fever that in some cases ended with unfortunate deaths of some patients. The main project objective is to improve preparedness for prevention, surveillance and control of mosquito population and MBDs, related potential epidemic outbreaks and negative impacts of conventional mosquito control measures on the environment. The project envisages numerous project outputs: Joint cross-border map of mosquito breeding sites; ICT tool for an integrated system of mosquito and MBDs surveillance; Protocol for surveillance of mosquito presence in the cross-border area; Trained local public health professionals; The introduction of the service of sampling mosquitos for MBDs; Joint emergency and preparedness protocol in case of MBDs epidemic outbreak; Trained local medical staff; Mosquito abatement services; Recommendations for local government units in the cross-border area; Educated relevant actors in individual and public mosquito control. The main target groups the project will address are public health professionals, medical staff in public institution like schools and public homes for the elderly, citizens of West Bačka District and Osijek Baranja County, elementary school children, the elderly and especially local government units. Cross-border cooperation in the project is highly necessary because mosquitoes know no borders and the regions cannot provide a timely response to potential MBD threats without active communication and coordinated actions.

Expected Results (EN): Number of elderly people and children assisted by social services provided through government bodies.

Expected Outputs (EN):

The project has the following results: (1) Establishment of a cross-border integrated system (ICT tool) of mosquito and mosquito-borne disease (MBDs) surveillance comprising weather data, interactive maps connected to GIS pointing to mosquito breeding sites, data on number and flow of mosquito population including an early warning system for MBD presence in the area. (2) Public health professionals in West Bačka District and Osijek Baranja County will be equipped with surveillance and laboratory equipment and trained for mosquito surveillance and sampling methods for detection of MBDs in order to effectively cooperate with local government units (LGUs) and provide relevant information to the public. (3) Mosquito population contained in critical locations in West Bačka District and Osijek Baranja County by environmentally responsible mosquito abatement treatments. (4) Increased knowledge of relevant actors and the public on individual mosquito population control measures and potential MBD threats. LGUs will be given recommendations on effective measures on mosquito population containment and control services since related costs are planned annually in local budgets. The public health institutes in the project as public facilities will provide their services to most vulnerable groups, children and the elderly, in order to improve prevention and spreading of MBDs among the population. Accordingly, education of 4000 children and 200 elderly citizens is envisaged by the project.
