Description (EN):

OceanWise aims to jointly develop a set of longterm measures to reduce the impact of expanded polystyrene products (EPS) in the North-East Atlantic Ocean. 13 partners including national governmental agencies responsible for marine environment, waste management and recycling will take up this challenge within circular economy principles. Tangible solutions will be set by addressing the entire life-cycle of EPS products to achieve transnational sound management of EPS marine litter in the Atlantic. Based on resource-efficiency, participatory methods and Circular Economy principles, this project will generate new and best practices within sectors using, manufacturing or recycling EPS. With this aim, the consortium is intended to explore new ways to: (i) Identify EPS products and their source that are more likely to reach the marine environment and impact on its ecosystems; (ii) Propose and test plausible options (reduce, reuse, recycle, recover) to achieve better environmental outcomes within different sectors; (iii) Engage producer and designer communities on the sustainability of specific applications and to explore more circular models; (iv) Develop CE-oriented methodologies to assess new opportunities, barriers and policy options. This proposal is driven by the EU-Marine Strategy Framework Directive and the OSPAR Convention’s Regional Action Plan on Marine Litter.

Achievements (EN):

Foamed polystyrene products are a major and worrying source of marine litter in the Atlantic Ocean. These products, Expanded polystyrene (EPS) and Extruded polystyrene (XPS) are plastic foam materials used globally in the composition of several products, such as drinks cups or single-use food boxes that end up in floating structures in the sea, threatening the oceans and marine wildlife. The OCEANWISE project aims to develop long-term measures to reduce the impact of EPS in the Atlantic Ocean. Based on resource-efficiency participatory methods and circular economy principles, OCEANWISE is generating new and best practices within sectors considering the use, manufacturing, recycling and uptake of foamed polystyrene, working together with people who produce and/or design products with these materials or manage foamed polystyrene waste. The project has collected and disseminated best practices, created new information for producers and designers of EPS applications, as well as public authorities, within more circular models of specific products’ waste cycles. OCEANWISE provides tangible and concrete results on EPS applications, and whilst it focuses on a very specific type of material, it is hoped that such findings give rise to new knowledge and methodologies suitable for use with other similarly complex challenges. The project also carried out various case studies including mapping existing knowledge gained from participatory events called Living Labs of eco-innovation to address the EPS litter challenges. Their conclusions and mutual findings were used to generate a catalogue of EPS applications guidelines to be submitted to OSPARs technical committee on Environmental Impacts of Human Activities for the approval of measures across the North-East Atlantic region.

Expected Results (EN):

Expected Outputs (EN):

The project will produce various case studies including mapping existing knowledge gained from participatory events called Living Labs of Eco-innovation (LLEco) to address the EPS litter challenges. Pilot actions in each region using similar methods will systematise the understanding of common problems and diverse approaches.
