Groene reststromen - al te vaak foutief groenafval genoemd - bestaan voornamelijk uit gras, snoeihout, boomstronken en bladeren. Helaas worden deze resten vaak beperkt of zelfs niet benut ondanks dat deze grondstoffen bruikbaar zijn als hernieuwbare energiebron, grondverbeteraar, verpakkingsmateriaal of veevoeder. 'GrasGoed - Natuurlijk Groen als Grondstof' geeft natuurbeheerders, bedrijven en kennisinstellingen in de grensregio Vlaanderen en Nederland de resten van natuurbeheer een tweede leven. Vooral bij het beheer van natte gebieden (o.a. rietland, natte graslanden, vochtige heide) komen jaarlijks duizenden tonnen maaisel vrij dat niet of beperkt benut wordt. Niet alleen is het logistiek moeilijk om het maaisel uit de gebieden te halen, ook maaisel storten is een dure aangelegenheid. ‘GrasGoed - Natuurlijk groen als grondstof’ wil daarom duurzame ketens tot stand brengen van aanbod, inzameling, verwerking en afzet. De focus ligt hierbij op enkele karakteristieke en natuurlijke landschappen in de grensregio zoals Altena-Biesbosch/Vlijmens Ven (rivierenlandschap), Grenspark De Zoom-Kalmthoutse Heide (grensoverschrijdend heidelandschap) en Het Dommeldal/Vallei van de Zwarte Beek (grensoverschrijdend kleinschalig beekdal). Het project wil in deze drie regio's zo veel mogelijk grasachtige biomassa bij elkaar brengen om tot een economisch interessante hoeveelheid te komen. Daartoe verbeteren we de onder meer maai-, voorbewerkings- en transportsystemen. Zo komt het maaisel beter uit de natuur en is het droog en goedkoper te vervoeren. We verbeteren ook machines die celstructuren van het gras vernietigen en scheiden in vezels, eiwitten en celsappen. Voorbeelden daarvan zijn papier en karton, isolatiemateriaal of veenvrije potgrond uit grasvezels. Het eiwitconcentraat en het nutriëntensap proberen we verder in te zetten als veevoeder of bodemverbeteraar. Met maaisel kunnen ontzettend veel producten ontwikkeld worden, maar de markt is nog nieuw. Binnen het project willen we de markt voor regionale biogebaseerde producten graag meer en beter ontsluiten. In het eerste half jaar is vooral gewerkt aan de opstart van het project, hierdoor zijn belangrijke mijlpalen nog niet bereikt. Wel is er op communicatiegebied al veel gebeurd, o.a. een projectwebsite, folders, banners en een drukbezochte startconferentie. Het project heeft hierdoor al veel bekendheid gekregen bij relevante partijen waarvan er verschillende ook aangegeven hebben zich te willen aansluiten bij het project. Voorts zijn er inventarisaties uitgevoerd naar kwaliteiten en kwantiteiten van diverse natuurgroenstromen, wordt er nagedacht over programma’s van eisen voor nieuwe maai-, voorbewerkings- en transportmachines en zijn er 8 potentiële biogebaseerde producten uitgekozen waarvoor een businessmodel opgesteld gaat worden.

"Green residual flows - all too often called faulty green waste - consist mainly of grass, prunings, tree stumps and leaves, but these residues are often limited or even not used despite the fact that these raw materials can be used as a renewable energy source, soil improver, packaging material or animal feed. 'Grass Good - Natural Green as a Raw Material' gives nature managers, companies and knowledge institutions in the border region Flanders and the Netherlands the remains of nature management a second life. Especially in the management of wet areas (including reed land, wet grasslands, humid heathland) thousands of tons of grass clippings are released each year that are not or only to a limited extent. Not only is it difficult to pick up the clippings from the areas, but clippings are also expensive. 'GrasGoed - Natural green as raw material' therefore wants to establish sustainable chains of supply, collection, processing and marketing. The focus here is on some characteristic and natural landscapes in the border region such as Altena-Biesbosch / Vlijmens Ven (river landscape), the Zoom-Kalmthoutse Heide border park (cross-border heathland) and the Dommeldal / Valley of the Black Brook (cross-border small-scale stream valley). The project aims to bring together as much grassy biomass as possible in these three regions in order to achieve an economically interesting quantity. To this end we improve the mowing, pre-processing and transport systems. In this way, the clippings come out of nature better and can be transported dry and cheaper. We are also improving machines that destroy cell structures of the grass and separate them into fibers, proteins and cell sap. Examples are paper and cardboard, insulation material or peat-free soil from grass fibers. The protein concentrate and nutrient juice we try to use further as animal feed or soil improver. A lot of products can be developed with cuttings, but the market is still new. Within the project, we want to open up the market for regional bio-based products more and better. In the first half of the year, the main focus was on the start-up of the project, which means that important milestones have not yet been achieved. However, a great deal has already happened in the field of communication, including a project website, leaflets, banners and a well-attended start conference. As a result, the project has already received a lot of attention from relevant parties, of which several have also indicated that they want to join the project. In addition, inventories have been carried out into qualities and quantities of various nature-green flows, consideration is being given to programs of requirements for new mowing, pre-processing and transport machines and 8 potential bio-based products have been selected for which a business model will be drawn up.

Met ‘GrasGoed - Natuurlijk Groen als Grondstof’ geven natuurbeheerders, bedrijven en kennisinstellingen in de grensregio Vlaanderen en Nederland natuurgras een tweede leven als duurzaam product. Heel wat graslanden worden jaarlijks gemaaid. Maar vooral bij het beheer van natte natuurgebieden wordt het maaisel niet altijd nuttig ingezet en bijgevolg bestempeld als afvalstof. Met GrasGoed maken we het verschil. Door middel van raffinage halen we verschillende waardevolle bestanddelen uit het gras zoals vezels, eiwitten, mineralen en fosfaten. Hiervan worden allerlei producten vervaardigd. Zo wordt de hernieuwbare grondstof natuurgras een duurzaam alternatief voor eindige grondstoffen en gaan we van gras naar goed. Maar, een rendabel resultaat is alleen mogelijk door verschillende schakels in de keten - gaande van aanbod, inzameling en verwerking tot afzet - beter op elkaar te laten aansluiten door deze kritisch te evalueren en te verbeteren. In eerste instantie werd de hoeveelheid en het type maaisel dat vrijkomt in het project, geïnventariseerd. De focus lag hierbij op drie natuurgebieden in de grensregio Vlaanderen-Nederland: Grenspark Kalmthoutse Heide, Altena-Biesbosch-Vlijmens Ven en Dommeldal-Vallei van de Zwarte Beek. Daarnaast werden er een economische analyse gemaakt en een financieel model uitgewerkt. Het model bracht de kosten en baten van de hele keten in kaart - van natuurbeheerder, transporteur en tot de verwerking van een product. Om zoveel mogelijk van het beschikbare natuurgras bij elkaar te brengen, werden in GrasGoed aangepaste maai- en transportsystemen ontwikkeld. Deze machines krijgen het maaiwerk op nat terrein voor elkaar en halen het maaisel snel en efficiënt uit de natuurgebieden. Alleen op deze manier komen we tot een economisch interessante kwaliteit en kwantiteit aan natuurgras. Om te controleren of de kwaliteit van het natuurgras voldoet aan de eisen voor grasverwerking, werden verschillende batches natuurgras verzameld voor experimenten. Er werden kuilen van het verzamelde natuurgras aangelegd om het voor langere tijd te bewaren. Daarnaast werd vers maaisel ook rechtstreeks op het terrein verwerkt met een mobiele grasraffinagemachine. Gedurende het project testten de grasverwerkende bedrijven het natuurgras op verschillende parameters, zoals vegetatietype, snijlengte en maaitijdstip. Zo werd enerzijds onderzocht waar het natuurgras aan moet voldoen om bruikbaar te zijn als grondstof voor potentiële eindproducten. Anderzijds konden de verwerkingsinstallaties worden aangepast op basis van de typische eigenschappen van het natuurgras. Binnen GrasGoed richtten we ons op vier producten: graspapier, bodemverbeteraar, diervoeder en isolatiematten. Zo werden bijvoorbeeld graseiwitten gebruikt in kippenvoer en grasvezels ingezet als grondstof voor isolatiematten. Voor deze twee producten werd een LCA (Life Cycle Analyse) uitgevoerd. Zo onderzochten we hoe milieuvriendelijk deze toepassingen in werkelijkheid zijn. Tot slot nam GrasGoed de eerste stappen om enkele prototypes als commercieel product op de markt te brengen. Zo produceerde Gramitherm de eerste isolatiematten op basis van natuurgras. Deze matten zijn al toegepast in eigen gebouwen van de deelnemende Vlaamse en Nederlandse natuurbeheerders. Verder nam drukkerij Zwartopwit het eerste GrasGoed-graspapier op in haar aanbod. AVA Papierwaren sprong op de kar en liet een notitieboekje maken van het papier. With ‘GrasGoed — Natural Green as Raw Material’, nature managers, companies and knowledge institutions in the border region of Flanders and the Netherlands give nature grass a second life as a sustainable product. Many grasslands are mowed every year. But especially in the management of wet nature areas, the mowing is not always useful and therefore classified as waste. With GrasGood, we make the difference. Through refining, we extract various valuable components from the grass such as fiber, protein, minerals and phosphates. All kinds of products are made of these. For example, the renewable raw material natural grass becomes a sustainable alternative to finite raw materials and we go from grass to good. However, a cost-effective result is only possible by making different links in the chain — ranging from supply, collection and processing to marketing — better matched by critical evaluation and improvement. Initially, the amount and type of mower released in the project was identified. The focus was on three natural areas in the border region of Flanders-Netherlands: Grenspark Kalmthoutse Heide, Altena-Biesbosch-Vlijmens Ven and Dommeldal-Vallei van de Zwarte Beek. In addition, an economic analysis was made and a financial model developed. The model mapped the costs and benefits of the entire chain — from nature manager, transporter and to the processing of a product. To bring together as much of the available natural grass as possible, adapted mowing and transport systems were developed in GrasGoed. These machines get the mowing work done on wet terrain and quickly and efficiently extract the mower from the natural areas. Only in this way do we achieve an economically interesting quality and quantity of natural grass. To check whether the quality of the natural grass meets the requirements for grass processing, several batches of natural grass were collected for experiments. Pits of the collected natural grass were built to preserve it for a longer period of time. In addition, fresh cutting was also processed directly on site with a mobile grass refining machine. During the project, the grass processing companies tested the natural grass on various parameters, such as vegetation type, cutting length and cutting time. On the one hand, it was investigated what natural grass must meet in order to be usable as a raw material for potential end products. On the other hand, the processing plants could be adapted according to the typical characteristics of the natural grass. Within GrasGoed, we focused on four products: grass paper, soil improver, feed and insulation mats. For example, grass proteins were used in chicken feed and grass fibres as a raw material for insulation mats. For these two products, an LCA (Life Cycle Analysis) was performed. For example, we investigated how environmentally friendly these applications are in reality. Finally, GrasGoed took the first steps to market some prototypes as a commercial product. Gramitherm produced the first insulation mats based on natural grass. These mats have already been used in their own buildings of the participating Flemish and Dutch nature managers. Furthermore, printing company ZwartOpWhite included the first GrasGoed grass paper in its offer. Ava Papierwaren jumped on the cart and had a notebook made of the paper.
