The countries of the Atlantic Area have the world’s best offshore wind resource and there is huge opportunity to develop a viable industry supporting thousands of jobs, as well as helping to meet targets for green energy production. The ARCWIND project contributes to the transition from fixed to floating wind platform systems for use in deeper water and more exposed sites in the Atlantic Area by the assessment of wind energy potential with a regional atmospheric model and remote sensed data, the study of different types of floating high power wind turbines numerically and experimentally. A multicriteria approach for selecting the locations of the wind energy farms will be developed and applied to the Atlantic region countries. The project will also contribute to the feasibility and appropriateness of having different types of floating wind turbines installed in the various locations, considering the specific features of the sites and the main types of floating structures. High power turbine concepts and innovative control algorithms will be considered as case studies and then chosen for each country, in which a specific concept of platform will be studied numerically and experimentally. Also farms with these platforms will be considered for cost assessment, logistics and maintenance planning, as well as risk assessment.

The Atlantic Area countries have the world’s best offshore wind resources, which creates a huge opportunity to develop a viable industry supporting thousands of jobs, and to meet targets for green energy production. However, their deep waters are not suitable for fixed turbines, so the development of floating offshore wind technologies is needed. The floating wind turbine sector has experienced great development with many concepts approaching commercialisation. ARCWIND contributes to the transition from fixed to floating wind platform systems for use in deeper waters and more exposed sites in the Atlantic Area. The project evaluated the wind resource of the Atlantic Area, identifying the most promising areas for sitting floating offshore wind farms. A multicriteria approach for selecting the locations of the wind energy farms was applied to the Atlantic countries, meaning the feasibility and appropriateness of having different types of floating wind turbines installed in the various locations, according to the specific features of the sites and the main types of floating structures. Three floating concepts were developed and evaluated based on numerical tools and experimental tests, having in mind their optimisation and cost reduction. ARCWIND developed designs for high power turbines and the mooring system of the concepts was adapted and optimized for the selected locations and the environmental conditions. Six wind farms were also designed, TWO with each of the platform concepts, in a total of 2.6 gigawatts production capability. Maintenance, logistics, costs and risk assessment have been planned for these designed wind farms. ARCWIND is thus contributing to a stage where floating offshore wind technology is approaching commercial scale. Expected Results (EN):

The project will deliver a multicriteria methodology for selecting locations for siting floating offshore wind farms as well as application cases in the Atlantic Area countries. A long term climatology of wind resources will also be provided for the coasts of the Atlantic Area countries. Various technologies of floating wind turbines will be studied and further modified and adapted, such as semisubmersible, Tension Leg Platform and spar type. These platforms will be studied numerically and experimentally producing a significant amount of results that will be very useful to future developers of the technology. Designs for high power turbines will be available at the end of the project. Controls for those machines adapted to the site environmental conditions will be also available. The mooring system of the concepts will be adapted and optimized for the selected locations and the environmental conditions. Innovative methodologies for the scaled test at wave tank will be developed to solve the conflict between the scaling of hydrodynamic and aerodynamic loads in combined wave and wind test cases. Approaches for designing floating wind energy farms will be developed and applied to various locations as case studies. Approaches for cost estimating and for planning logistics and maintenance of the wind energy parks will be developed and applied to various locations as case studies. Results will indicate the best locations where floating offshore wind farms can be installed.
