Description (EN):

The Atlantic region that is characterised by low investment in R&D+I, and the low competitiveness of SMEs. The integration of hydrogen generation technologies through renewable energy sources and its recovery from industrial waste streams with safe and efficient storage systems and innovative technology, using hydrogen as a fuel with zero emissions in the maritime transport and industrial sector will increase the energy and resource efficiency of the Atlantic Area. The Hylantic project addresses global energy issues and focuses on the challenge of ensuring a sustainable and efficient energy supply with low carbon emissions. This project aims to establish an excellent transnational network to advance the R&D, implementation and commercialisation of hydrogen as an energy vector for future power generation in the Atlantic Area, thus providing energy efficient solutions to strategic sectors in the Atlantic region such as transport, marine, ultra-low energy building supply, and/or portable and stationary devices. Through collaborative research and synergies within the team, Hylantic will address research and innovation for smart and sustainable growth covering sectoral and regional needs. The project scope includes R&D of new materials and innovative technologies, combined with advanced simulation and optimisation techniques for hydrogen generation through renewable energy and local waste streams, thus delivering environmentally friendly outputs to provide energy efficient solutions to strategic sectors in the Atlantic region and benefit regional industries, generating positive socio-economic impact.

Achievements (EN):

The ability to create a deployment strategy for power generation with H2 that can create employment and regulatory policies promoting commercialisation is a major global challenge for the Atlantic regions. The HYLANTIC project addresses global energy issues and focuses on the challenge of ensuring a sustainable and efficient energy supply with low carbon emissions. The idea is to establish an excellent transnational network for the implementation and commercialisation of hydrogen as an energy vector for future power generation. The environmentally friendly outputs will thus provide energy-efficient solutions to strategic sectors such as transport, marine, ultra-low energy building supply, and/ or portable and stationary devices. The design of safe storage systems and efficient and low cost energy systems through an innovative fuel cell and H2 combustion engines and their implementation in prototypes are also included in the research programme of the project. The partnership was organised in different working groups focusing on obtaining more storage efficient and safe hydrogen from renewable energy, to develop technologies for obtaining energy that combines both fuel cells and hydrogen combustion engines, with application in the maritime sector. Finally, the partnership was dedicated to the search for new markets and the environmental and carbon footprint assessment of the developed technologies. HYLANTIC has gathered senior public sector representatives, politicians, public and private entities, and communities to ease the understanding of hydrogen technologies within the marine and coastal environment. These discussions were useful for policymakers to better understand the benefits of hydrogen, as well as the actions to support the absorption of renewable hydrogen in the marine and coastal regions of the Atlantic Area. "Hydrogen combustion in marine, particularly if it can be retrofitted to existing vessels and port equipment, will be a very important part of the solution we need going forward if we are to deliver a cost-effective transition away from conventional fuels. The technologies investigated in these projects have helped us as an operator, understand what is needed to implement our plans for net-zero.” David Hibbert Technical Superintendent, Marine Services, Orkney.

Expected Results (EN): Provide energy efficient solutions to strategic sectors in the Atlantic region such as transport, marine, ultra-low energy building supply, and/or portable and stationary device, thus generating positive socio-economic impact.

Expected Outputs (EN):

• Design of a novel photocatalytic reactor for H2 production; • Selective membrane process for H2 recovery from industrial gas streams; • Green H2 production via polymer electrolyte membrane electrolysis of water; • A safe H2 storage prototype using chemical hydrides; • Numerical model producing simulations of the safety on H2 generation, storage, delivery and use; • Superior novel catalysts, electrodes & electrolytes for fuel cell technology; • Innovative design of an internal H2 combustion engine with maximum H2 use (70 %); • Mathematical model for designing and optimising the fuel cell technology; • Transport demonstrable prototype powered by a hydrogen combustion engine; • Fuel cell prototype for ultra-low energy building supply; • Case study of the socio-economic aspects of H2 generation, storage, distribution and use of fuel cells and H2 internal combustion engines, e.g. public and stakeholder’s perceptions, acceptance and engagement; • Scientific publications.
