Description (EN):

The Protoatlantic project aims to develop a model for the prototyping and exploitation of innovative ideas in the maritime sector. Taking into account the high costs of prototyping activities, this proposal will be narrow to three well defined sectors: Renewable Energy, Marine Robotics and Blue Biotechnologies. The partnership will identify the product innovation capacity in the maritime sector, willing to address emerging markets in a co-creation paradigm with the local start-up communities, research centres and universities. The action will be based in existing co-working spaces and blue acceleration programs specialized in the marine sector and replicate success stories. For that purpose, acceleration programs will be implemented, starting from ideation to market access, where a normed and structured process is used to manage product innovation. The acceleration programs will attract innovative ideas, creating a unique ecosystem that will melt with a methodology that will cover from business model to market validation, including test phases. This circle will be completed with the launch to market of the most innovative and feasible ideas. The Protoatlantic network will allow to find the best place to build and test the prototype, and to identify the best places for the company to establish and launch its business. Policy makers and business support agencies will be involved, to provide the ecosystem of a legal and long term support.

Achievements (EN):

PROTOATLANTIC has developed a model for the prototyping and exploitation of innovative ideas in the maritime sector with a focus on three well-defined sectors: renewable energy, marine robotics, and blue biotechnologies. This project aims to identify product innovation capacity in the maritime sector willing to address emerging markets in a co-creation model with start-up communities, research centres, universities, and Local Authorities. This acceleration program has allowed the creation of a path from idea to market access where a structured process is used to manage product innovation. Based on the development of products, mentoring, and funding these programs have attracted innovative ideas, creating a unique ecosystem. At the end of the process, 12 companies were selected to pitch in front of a pool of investors from the Atlantic Area. In addition, the project provided 10 companies with the possibility to take advantage of the experience and expertise of the most important testing facilities in Europe, where they were able to test and prototype their technology. On the other hand, this project has validated an international methodology to offer the scientific community a tool to develop new products, startups and spinoffs in the maritime field. It has also trained teams to high capacity to develop projects and start-ups ready to scale in a viable and sustainable business model, with a high social impact. Finally, PROTOATLANTIC has delivered an updated guideline with existing policies, investors, and business support entities in the Atlantic Area, shaping the entrance door to develop maritime prototyping and startups development in the Atlantic Area. Expected Results (EN):

- An updated guideline with existing policies, investors and business support entities in the Atlantic Area; - A valid methodology to develop maritime startups in the Atlantic Region; - Focusing the “entrance door” to the maritime prototyping and startups development for the associated countries in the Atlantic Region; - Develop prototyping labs and startups labs in the Atlantic Region.

Expected Outputs (EN):

- Validation of an international methodology to offer to the scientific community a tool to develop startups and spinoff in the maritime field; - Training teams to high capacity to develop projects and start-ups ready to scale in a viable and sustainable business model, with a high social impact. - Place the Atlantic region as a reference in maritime entrepreneurship. Agile methodologies for the entrepreneurship will be tested, based in lean start up, teampreneurship, design thinking or learning by doing;
