Today, 75% of Europeans live in cities and suffer from air and noise pollution and traffic jams. The transport sector in European cities currently causes 50% of emissions and 30% of vehicle kilometres, thus is one of the major contributors to this issue. Due to expanding e-commerce, the last mile delivery has fundamentally changed. Goods are increasingly ordered online and delivered to the customer’s private address. More frequent but smaller parcels to decentral destinations are increasingly replacing the typical A2B transport from factories to shopping centres. Cargo pedelecs provide a veritable answer to the evolved requirements of last mile delivery. However, modern batteries cannot supply sufficient energy and fail in low temperatures which limit the potential of this promising concept. In contrast, the emission-free fuel cell technology of DLR provides significantly more energy until at least -20°C, is refilled within seconds and is twice as durable than batteries at comparable costs. With these characteristics, one fuel cell cargo pedelec (FCCP) can save 5,5 t CO2 p.a. by replacing combustion engine vehicles. For efficient exploitation of this potential, this project builds on an innovative logistic concept, tailored for the performance characteristic of FCCPs and the requirements of today’s urban freight transport (WP T1), latest fuel cell technology (WP T2), as well as intense involvement of cities to foster and implementing FCCPs (WP T3). In line with this, one crucial output of this project is a transnational strategic concept concerned with the best integration of emission free FCCPs in logistic delivery chains, including innovative technology and sustainable urban development. This project will facilitate the multiplication of emission free FCCPs, as it provides relevant and replicable information to cities and the transport sector (WP C) to stay abreast of the fundamental changes in the transport sector, reducing CO2 emissions in European cities.

Derzeit leben ca. 75% der Europäer in Städten und leiden unter Luftverschmutzung, Staus und hohem Geräuschpegel. Der Transportsektor verursacht 50% der Emissionen und 30% der gefahrenen Kilometer in europäischen Städten und damit den größten Anteil dieses Problems. Durch den wachsenden Online-Versandhandel hat sich dieser Sektor innerhalb der letzten Meile grundsätzlich verändert. Immer mehr Waren werden direkt nach Hause bestellt. Entsprechend ersetzt der Versand vieler kleiner Sendungen zu dezentralen Zielen zunehmend den Transport großer Mengen von Produzenten zu Einkaufzentren. Lastenfahrräder stellen eine gute Lösung für die veränderten Anforderungen dar. Allerdings können selbst moderne Batterien nicht ausreichend Energie bereitstellen und versagen zudem bei niedrigen Außentemperaturen, was eine breite gewerbliche Anwendung verhindert. Die emissionsfreie DLR-Brennstoffzellentechnologie liefert bis min. -20°C deutlich mehr Energie, ist in Sekunden betankt und hat ca. die doppelte Lebensdauer bei vergleichbaren Kosten. Mit dieser Charakteristik kann ein Brennstoffzellen-Lastenrad (FCCP) gewerbliche Transporter ersetzen und jährlich 5,5 t CO2 einsparen. Zur effizienten Nutzung dieses Potentials baut das Projekt auf ein innovatives Logistikkonzept, maßgeschneidert für die Leistungscharakteristik von FCCPs und die Anforderungen der letzten Liefermeile (WP T1), modernste Brennstoffzellentechnologie (WP T2) und intensive Einbindung von Städten als Förderer und Nutzer von FCCPs (WP T3). Daraus entsteht ein transnationales strategisches Konzept zur effizienten Integration von emissionsfreien FCCPs in Lieferketten, sowie innovative Technologie- und nachhaltige Städteentwicklung im Fahrradsektor. Schließlich wird dieses Konzept durch die Kommunikationsstrategie (WP C) sowohl Städten als auch den Transportsektor zugänglich gemacht und damit die Verbreitung emissionsfreier FCCPs im Anschluss an das Projekt gefördert (WP LT).

Aujourd’hui 75% des européens vivent en ville, et souffrent de la pollution et des nuisances sonores ainsi que des embouteillages. Le secteur des transports représente 50% des émissions et 30% des trajets effectués dans les villes européennes, donc la majeure partie de cette question. En raison de la croissance du e-commerce, ce secteur a fondamentalement changé sur le dernier kilomètre : les destinations se sont multipliées et les envois sont généralement plus légers. Cependant les véhicules n’ont pas été adaptés à ce changement ce qui aggrave la pollution. Le concept de « fret pédélec » apporte une véritable réponse pour ce type de livraisons. Néanmoins, même les batteries modernes ne peuvent fournir suffisamment d’énergie pour ce concept prometteur ce qui représente un obstacle. Les piles à combustibles développées par le DLR fournissent significativement plus d’énergie et cela jusqu’à -20°C. Rechargées en quelques secondes, elles ont une durée de vie double par rapport aux batteries et ce à prix comparables. Avec ces caractéristiques, un seul « fuel cell cargo pedelec » (FCCP) permet d’éviter 5,5 t CO2 p.a. en remplaçant un véhicule thermique. Pour une exploitation efficiente de ce potentiel, ce projet se base sur un concept logistique innovant - adapté aux caractéristiques inédites de ces vélos et aux exigences du fret urbain (WP T1) - la récente technologie des piles à combustible (WP T2), ainsi que l’implication des villes pour soutenir l’application de ce concept des FCCP (WP T3). Ce projet doit aboutir à une stratégie transnationale pour une meilleure intégration du FCCP dans les chaînes de distribution, pour soutenir l’innovation technologique, l’intégration de ces vélos dans le milieu urbain ainsi que l’échange d’informations entre les villes et les transporteurs, afin de pouvoir accompagner le changement concernant les livraisons du dernier kilomètre et de réduire les émissions de CO2 dans les villes du nord-ouest européen.
