Description (EN):

Riparian forests of the Mura-Drava-Danube Biosphere reserve constituting ecological corridors are in unfavorable condition and declining due to increasing incidence of pests & diseases, unsustainable human activities and lack of guidance on how to manage riparian forests, including where to find appropriate planting material, so that they can continue to persist and provide all ecosystem services. REFOCuS aims to counteract this decline by building resilience into riparian forests of the Biosphere reserve by providing 1) novel silvicultural methods for forest management and conservation and 2) increase availability of appropriate planting material to be used when natural regeneration fails. REFOCuS consortium consist of 5 project and 6 associated partners from Austria, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia, geographically covering the whole territory of the Biosphere reserve and is led by Slovenian Forestry Institute. REFOCuS includes four thematic working packages: 1) Interpreting knowledge, 2) Silviculture & conservation, 3) Planting material availability & 4) The policy interface supported by project management and project communication packages. It shall result in: 1) recommendations on tree species to use & promote, 2) spatial analysis of the riparian corridor, 3) management handbook for threatened riparian forests, 4) pests & diseases riparian forests information system & identification tool, 5) transnational seed transfer zones for seven riparian tree species for the Biosphere reserve & PP countries, 6) database on planting material for riparian forests connected to transnational seed transfer zones, 7) common regional planting material transfer procedure, 8) planting material use & conservation guidelines, 9) whole region riparian species gene bank, 10) holistic strategy for resilient riparian forests all drafted by PPs with support of ASPs, and discussed with target groups and other stakeholders & 11) installed demonstration sites for stakeholder education.

Achievements (EN):

REFOCUS - WE CAN'T PREDICT FUTURE, BUT WE CAN MODEL IT: As we said in the title, we can't predict future, but during the REFOCuS project we modelled and developed maps of species occurrence probability under climate change along with maps of seed transfer zones and their predicted spatial change over time for you to use for 10 important tree species of southeast European riparian forests. These maps will allow forest and conservation managers to already today select forest reproductive material that is suitable for future climate conditions. Species occurrence probability under climate change: The models predict the probability of occurrence of a certain tree species depending on the climate of given location – if the climate of a given location is very unsuitable for a certain species, the probability of occurrence is very low, and the value is close to zero for this particular location. A developed selection of 10 maps shows the present probability of occurrence as well as the modelled future probability of occurrence for two selected climate change scenarios (moderate and strong climate change), and two time periods (mid of the century and end of the century) for the seven most important riparian tree species. Seed transfer zones and their predicted spatial change over time: A selection of six maps shows the development of seed transfer zones during both selected climate change scenarios. Depending on the species, the modelling identified different variables as the important ones for modelling a species occurrence (such as seasonal maximum temperature, seasonal mean precipitation, degree-days below a certain temperature, annual heat, moisture index…). Geographic ranges with similar climate have been grouped together into a cluster by these variables and given a unique colour code attribute. Therefore, the clusters are specifically adapted to the most important variables for each of the 10 species. To plan reforestations, the provided set of maps should always be used in combination.

Expected Results (EN): Intensity of cooperation of key actors in the programme area in order to foster restoration and management of ecological corridors (survey based composite indicator)

Expected Outputs (EN):

The main result of REFOCuS is immediate contribution to improved resilience of forests serving as ecological corridors in the Mura-Drava-Danube Biosphere reserve. The result shall be achieved through intensified transnational cooperation of five project partners and six associated strategic partners (from policy, forest management and conservation domains) from Austria, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia. Intensity of cooperation shall be further facilitated by involvement of target groups and other stakeholders from the area of interest and whole Danube region through learning interactions (workshops and trainings) and discussions to come to a mutual understanding on how to build resilience into riparian forests of the Biosphere reserve. Improved resilience, fostering both restoration and management of riparian forest corridors in the Biosphere reserve, directly ensuring biodiversity, will be achieved through availability of innovative management tools (WP4), improved transnational availability of planting material for keystone riparian tree species (WP3, WP5), both embedded into policy setting (WP6). All 11 REFOCuS project and associated strategic partners shall through intense cooperation contribute to the development of project outputs making them widely acceptable to policy, forest and conservation managers.
