Description (EN):

With the European Green Belt, an extraordinary ecological network and living memorial landscape has been developed along the former Iron Curtain. In the area of the INTERREG Danube Transnational Programme (DTB) the European Green Belt connects 10 countries. It forms a backbone of the Pan-European ecological network and can provide a significant contribution to EU Green Infrastructure (GI) and TEN-G. However, the Green Belt still suffers from a certain level of not sufficiently connected habitats and valuable landscapes. The main objective of the „DaRe to Connect (D2C)“ project is therefore the implementation of the EU Danube Strategy by further transnational development of the connectivity of the Green Belt as backbone of EU Green infrastructure (EU GI) by maintaining and enhancing ecosystems and their services. The project defines feasible ecological corridors between Natura 2000 areas on transnational and macro-regional level and will provide concrete guidance and recommendations on planning and establishment of transnational ecological corridors connecting Natura 2000 areas on local and regional level, derived from pilot actions. Results will be mainstreamed via a transnational strategic vision "Green Belt in the Danube Region 2030” to be endorsed by national political stakeholders. The identification of ecological corridors on local, regional and transnational level is based on innovative GIS approaches, partly based on newly available EU-Copernicus (Sentinel) data. The improvement of capacities of responsible public bodies and NGOs will lead to better understanding as well as to an improved knowledge exchange and cooperation. PR-work and events will give local/regional people and politicians an understanding of how connectivity and ESS can contribute to human wellbeing. Project participation and learning interaction will enhance individual capacities of the PP's staff and other involved institutions to further develop the European Green Belt in the DTP area.

Achievements (EN):

GIS TOOL PUBLISHED TO USE BENEFITS OF THE PROJECT: Local and regional stakeholders with the D2C Pilot regions and beyond have got the tool which help them to identify natural features and potential ecological corridors on local and regional level along the European Green Belt with specific focus on the project area. The user friendly online GIS tool takes advantage of using High Resolution Layers and Sentinel-2 satellite data to classify the Broader Habitat Types and their connectivity as well as for identifying ecosystem service provisions and by GIS data processed during the implementation of the D2C project. Based on the developed methods that take advantage of using High Resolution Layers and Sentinel-2 satellite data to classify the Broader Habitat Types and their connectivity as well as for identifying ecosystem service provisions and by GIS data processed during the implementation of the D2C project, a user-friendly GIS tool was developed. It offers local and regional stakeholders, that are dealing with ecological network preservation and restoration in the DTP Programme area - especially within the Pilot Regions but also beyond, a tool to identify natural features and potential ecological corridors on local and regional level along the European Green Belt. Particularly staff members of authorities responsible for nature conservation and Natura 2000 sites can profit from the GIS tool by identifying the condition status of Natura 2000 habitats by remote sensing data instead of conducting or commissioning expensive field work. The geodata provided by the GIS-tool can also serve as a basis to select areas and plan for a more detailed and targeted assessment of habitats in the field. Thus, using Sentinel-2 data, crutial regions for the Natura 2000 network as well as negative or positive developments of the European Green Belt can be recognized due to the current available spatial data (short time series of data collection by Sentinel-2 satellites of 2017 and 2018). The small and user-friendly free GIS tool is accompanied by an online manual in order to guide the user through the functions of this web tool and benefit from the provided results asmuch as possible. Expected Results (EN): Intensity of cooperation of key actors in the programme area in order to foster restoration and management of ecological corridors (survey based composite indicator)

Expected Outputs (EN):

Main result of the project are planning provisions accompanied by strategic political declarations endorsed on local, regional and macro-regional level on future establishment of ecological corridors between Natura 2000 areas along the Green Belt in the Danube Region. D2C will make a valuable contribution with regard to intensifying and improving the cooperation of public authorities and civil society organizations (NGO) to improve the ecological connectivity of the Natura 2000 network along the Green Belt. The project will ensure knowledge exchange on previous good practices and from novel approaches implemented. Macro-regional, regional and local alliances assembling key stakeholders leading and contributing to activities addressing this ecological challenge will be institutionalized beyond project’s lifetime. Alliances will commit to the implementation of the transnational strategic vision through elaboration and endorsement of local and regional action plans to support and enhance ecological connectivity. Participation in the transnational project and planned learning interactions will enhance individual capacities of staff of PPs and further institutions engaged in nature protection, public administration and ecological development. Finally, Transnational Strategic Vision “Green Belt in the Danube Region 2030” will not only align to the addressed Danube Region’s policies but sets a framework for collaboration and mutual learning beyond project lifetime.
