Description (EN):

The overall objective of the project is to create two cultural poles of European significance, one in Serres and one in Petrich which will create synergies and attract visitors from their neighbouring, national areas as well as from abroad. Two buildings will be restored and converted to Museums, following low energy consumption principles: the Serres building as a NZEB and the Petrich Building will be energy upgraded, contributing thus, to environment protection and resource efficiency. The restoration of the old buildings and their transformation into cultural assets of great value for local communities together with the envisaged promotional campaigns will enhance the cultural heritage preservation and will raise their attractiveness to the tourists. Αll these will accelerate the tourist development in the cross border region corresponding to the specific objective and the investment priority of the PA2, namely: SO4-To valorize cross border area cultural and natural heritage for tourist purposes, IP (6c) - Conserving, protecting, promoting and developing natural and cultural heritage.

Achievements (EN):

The successful implementation of the CULTURAL DIPOLE project has been a challenge with multiple benefits, not only for the partners of the project, but also for all the local stakeholders, entrepreneurs and residents primarily of the two cities and, consequently, of the whole cross border area. The realised outputs and expected outcomes of the project can be summarized as follows: The CULTURAL DIPOLE will enhance the attractiveness and tourist identity of Serres and Pertich. The annual number of tourists visiting the two cities and the cross border area is expected to increase. The creation of the two Museums in the frame of the project, with the prospect of developing the Cultural Parks in the future, will have a positive effect on the tourist character of the wider region. As a result of tourism development, direct benefits will arise for the whole area, for example creation of new jobs and employment opportunities, but also indirect, related to the inspiration of locals and others, in terms of using designs and motives in local products and initiatives. The CULTURAL DIPOLE will act as flagship enforcing the tourist identity and branding of the two areas. The Contemporary Art Museum “Constantin Xenakis”, the new Historical Museum of Petrich and the whole concept of the CULTURAL DIPOLE will be promoted, through the participation in various cultural events and joint activities implemented in the wider region. Thus, new opportunities will be provided to the whole cross border area, for further development and cooperation.

Expected Results (EN):

The creation of the two Museums during the project with the prospect of developing the Cultural Dipole in the future will have a positive effect on the tourist character of the wider area. Serres and Petrich will be further developed, in order to host the visitors and provide them with all the necessary services and facilities (accommodation, food, tour guide services). The project area will become more attractive and sustainable, while the creation of new jobs and employment in the tourist sector will be promoted. Benefits for the area will be direct from tourism but also indirect related to the inspiration of locals and others, from the artworks and other objects to be exhibited e.g. to use designs and motives in the branding of local products and initiatives. The Museums will be integrated in the tourist packages of the two cities and a common tourist package will be developed. For Serres, a totally new tourist destination will be created, the Contemporary Art Museum, which will host the modern art collection of “Constantin Xenakis”. Even though, there are other collections exhibited in the city e.g. Archaeological, Byzantine, Ethnographic - Folklore Museum, there is not any facility to house pieces of modern art.Concerning Petrich the establishment of a new Museum will provide more space and normative conditions for exhibition and storage of all findings and excavated objects in the region. Moreover ,it will facilitate public access to them, to the ethnographic collection and to all other exhibitions that are property of the Historical Museum at present and will be exhibited in the new Museum in the future, since excavations continue. According to statistics, the number of the annual tourist overnight stays at accommodation is 12.000 for the city of Petrich (for 2015) and 158.655 for the prefecture of Serres (for 2014). These figures are expected to increase further after the completion of the project activities and the creation of the two Museums.
