HERAUSFORDERUNG: Abwasser (WW) enthält kohlenstoffhaltige Stoffe, die als Rohstoff für biobasierte Produkte genutzt werden könnten. In NWE wird dieses Potenzial bisher kaum genutzt. Dies führt zu einem Verlust wertvoller Rohstoffe, CO2-Emissionen und einem Verbrauch an natürlichen Ressourcen. VERÄNDERUNG: Es gibt Marktchancen für Rohstoffe aus WW, die jedoch einen Abgleich von Produktion (Kläranlagen, KA) und Nachfrage (Industrie) erfordern. KA benötigen einen Wertewechsel von der Abwasserreinigung zu einer Rohstoffproduktion. Marktteilnehmer müssen KA mit einer Rohstoffquelle statt mit verschmutztem WW verbinden. Die Gesetzgebung sollte zu dem neuen kreislaufförmigen Ansatz passen. Um die Chancen zu nutzen und einen Kreislaufansatz für WW zu starten, wird WoW! 1)das ÖKONOMISCHE POTENZIAL aufzeigen und die erfolgversprechendste Wertschöpfungskette für kohlenstoffbasierte Rohstoffe aus Abwasser ermitteln. 2)die TECHNISCHE MACHBARKEIT in drei Pilotanwendungen zur Nutzbarmachung von Cellulose, Fett und PHA aus Abwasser aufzeigen. 3)RECHTLICHE Barrieren für den Marktzutritt der rückgewonnenen Rohstoffe identifizieren und Handlungspläne formuliert. ZENTRALE ERGEBNISSE: - Identifizierung von 5 Wertschöpfungsketten mit hohem Potenzial für kohlenstoffbasierte Rohstoffe aus Abwasser. - Ein Decision Support Tool für die Nutzung kohlenstoffbasierter Rohstoffe aus Abwasser. - 3 WoW!-Pilotanwendungen mit einer Optimierung innovativer Rückgewinnungs- und Nutzungstechnologien. - 5 Bioprodukte aus WW, zugeschnitten auf die Anforderungen von Marktteilnehmern. - 6 nationale Handlungspläne und 1 EU Umsetzungsfahrplan. LANGZEITEFFEKTE: Die Pilotanwendungen ergeben schätzungsweise 1.000 t handelsfähiger Produkte (300 t Essigsäure, 300 t Aktivkohle, 400 t Bioöl, 1 t PHA und ein Demoprodukt für Biotreibstoff). Zusätzlich werden Vermittlungsveranstaltungen organisiert und 10 Memoranden mit intressierten firmen geschlossen.

BUT: Les eaux usées (WW) contiennent de éléments carbonés (CBEs) pouvant être utilisés comme matière première dans la fabrication de produits biosourcés. Cependant, dans de l’Europe ce potentiel n’est que très peu exploité. OBJECTIF: Il existe des opportunités de marché pour les matières premières issues des WW, mais il faut pour cela que les usines de traitement des WW (WWTPs) et l’industrie soient en accord. Les WWTPs doivent être utilisées pour produire des matières à valeur ajoutée et non pour traiter des déchets, les industriels devant considérer les WW comme une ressource et la législation devant mieux promouvoir cette pratique. Dans ce contexte, WOW va: 1) Montrer le POTENTIEL ECONOMIQUE des WW: en identifiant les chaînes de valeur des CBEs les plus prometteuses (WP1). 2) Montrer la FAISABILITE TECHNIQUE: dans 3 pilotes, les techniques de récupération et de valorisation en lipides, cellulose et PHA seront optimisées tout en respectant les spécificités mises en avant lors de l’étude de marché (WP2). 3) Restreindre les BARRIERES LEGISLATIVES concernant le marché de ces matières premières: elles seront identifiées et des plans d´action nationaux écrit (WP3). RESULTATS: -Identification de 5 chaînes de valeur à fort potentiel des CBEs issus des WW. -Un outil d’aide à la décision guidera les WWTPS dans leur transition vers une approche d’économie circulaire des WW. -3 pilotes optimisant des techniques innovantes de récupération et réutilisation. -5 bioproduits issus des WW élaborés selon les spécificités attendues par les industriels. -6 plans d´action nationaux et 1 feuille de route politique de EU. EFFETS A LONG TERME: Production d’environ 1.000 t de produits commercialisables: 300 t d’acide, 300 t de charbon actif, 400 t d’huiles bio, 1 t de PHA et un démonstrateur pour biocarburants. Des évènements internationaux seront organisés et 10 protocoles d’accord ont été signés avec industriels.

CHALLENGE: Wastewater (WW) contains valuable substances that could be used as raw materials for biobased products. However, in NWE this potential has is hardly exploited yet. This results in loss of valuable materials and increased CO2-emmissions and use of natural resources. CHANGE: There are market opportunities for raw materials from WW, but for this, supply (wastewater treatment plants(WWTPs)) and demand (from industry) need alignment. This calls for a transition: at WWTPs a shift is needed from treating WW to producing valuable materials. Market parties need to regard WW as a valuable source instead of ‘dirty unsafe water’ and policies should better fit this new circular practice. To capitalise on these opportunities and work towards a circular approach on WW, WOW! will: 1) Show the ECONOMIC POTENTIAL: by identifying the most promising value chains from WW; 2) Demonstrate the TECHNICAL FEASIBILITY: in 3 pilots recovery & upcycling techniques for cellulose, lipids and PHA will be optimised, while tailoring the product specifications to market needs; 3) Lower POLICY BARRIERS: policy barriers for market uptake of recovered materials will be identified and action plans developed. OUTPUTS: - Identification of 5 high potential value chains for raw materials from WW. - A Decision Support Tool that guides WWTPs in their transition towards a circular approach on WW. - 3 WOW! pilots optimising and implementing innovative recovery and upcycling techniques. - 5 bioproducts made out of WW, tailored to the specifications of market parties. - 6 national policy action plans and 1 EU policy roadmap. LONG TERM EFFECTS: The pilots result in approx. 1000 tons of marketable products (300 tons of acetic acid, a 300 t of active char, 400 t of bio-oil, 1 t PHA-bioplastic and a demoproduct for biofuel), plus organising brokerage events and signing 10 Memoranda of understanding with interested companies

Expected Outputs (EN): Stand alone recovery and upcycling techniques for cellulose, PHA and lipids exist on small pilotscale. Comprehensive process chains resulting in marketable products and viable value chains do not exist. Result: 40% of carbon elements have no valuable use
