Youth Network for Peace (YNP) is a new, regional, cross border, youth led initiative to build a vibrant movement of 10,000 diverse young people (aged 15–25yrs) across N. Ireland & the border regions of Ireland resulting in meaningful, purposeful & sustained contact between young people from different communities. Based on a 13 partner membership & practice base YNP will proactively recruit young people from a range of backgrounds to ensure equality (Protestant-Catholic; rural-urban; male-female; LGB&T; BME; NEET; migrant; traveller; ROMA; and Garda Diversion). The regional YNP has been informed & designed by young people over an 18 month period leading to the final project proposal & submission. This is complemented by literature which recommends a youth work approach focussing on cross community, cross-border & youth participation activities. In the absence of a youth parliament in NI & avenues for young marginalised people to actively engage in decision-making across the island, a full manifesto of ‘need’ has emerged from young people calling upon significant others to help them establish a co-ordinated regional network which can have real meaning & influence. The quality of this design means that the level of participation & quality of the cross community contact will vary for each young person as they can opt to be involved in one or more activities within the initiative. The level of participation will vary in intensity for each person but all activities will embed a cross community &/or cross community dimension. Managed Contact theory will be implemented in preparing individuals & groups before, during & after to ensure contact & exploration take place in a safe & contained manner. YNP will be achieved through the lead partner YouthAction & 12 project partners all of whom are experienced in peace-building, youth work & citizenship building initiatives. A Regional Youth Steering Body will work alongside the partnership to advise & guide the project development as well as review the impact & outcomes. SLA’s & a clear partnership ‘terms of reference’ will support partners to deliver on YNP activities. YNP will build, strengthen & consolidate a regional network of 10,000 young people (60:40 NI:ROI), that is cost effective & sustainable (a total of €1,107,885–approx €32 each young person per year) & that will leave a lasting legacy of young leaders committed to tackling sectarianism & racism. This does not currently exist at regional level. YNP aligns with various North/South strategies & policies including NI Prog for Government 2016-2021, TBUC 2013, Equal Status Act 2000 (ROI) & National Youth Strategy 2014-2020 (ROI). This project is needed now at a regional level as young people across the region have become more disillusioned & distant from traditional politics & decision making. The impact of BREXIT & government failures has fuelled apathy & disconnect for many young people. A regional youth led network will be relevant to young people, have substance & collective influence in which the voice of all young people from across the country (urban, rural, border) can be heard. The investment of YNP will provide sustainable development through living on in young people who will have gained knowledge & skills to volunteer & work as activists in social, civil & political life. YNP will: Support all young people across the region to join a wider network of youth alliances where cultural diversity is celebrated & young people live & learn free from prejudice, hate & intolerance. Have meaning & relevance to a diverse range of young people, including those most disaffected, based on matters affecting them & the wider community. Provide a flexible framework of engagement incorporating Dialogue events, Social Action, Insight, Outreach, Digital transmissions, including radio podcasts, links to Wider networks, Influencing Actions & Conventions, with a key focus on development, diversity & democracy. Create meaningful, purposeful & sustained contact (including cross border cooperation) through youth work methods that develop positive relations & make progress in improving attitudes to good relations & respect. Enable control & meaningful decisions by young people, including an enhanced YouthBank structure– a diverse & youth led small grant giving scheme, supporting peace building projects at regional /sub regional level. Connect through a new Regional Youth Democracy Hub at YouthAction NI (Belfast) –a sustainable & symbolic space as a catalyst for the ongoing contribution of young people to shaping a better society. YNP will connect key regional youth network organisations in a new way. The 13 partners will strategically connect at regional & cross border levels. Each partner has a well established track record in peace building, supporting youth & civil participation, & experience of reaching marginalised young people (LGBT, NEET, BME, Gardaí Diversionary). Each organisation has a significant membership of young people & youth organisations, plus has regional significance & influence at a strategic level, regionally, nationally & in Europe. Young people will benefit in NI/border regions by: -Targeting those from areas continuing to suffer as a result of the conflict; those who face multiple barriers to learning, life & work; including those from incoming communities. -Providing a platform of influence for all young people to live, learn & socialise together. -Practically connecting young people as a change movement to inspire others & infiltrate social action. -Being the key drivers of YNP through a regional youth steering body. Creating mobility across a range of borders. Organisations working with young people will benefit by: -Linking regional youth organisations to better co-ordinate participation & peace building North &South.
