Face aux nouveaux enjeux économiques et environnementaux du monde d’aujourd’hui dont témoignent les aléas des prix des produits pétroliers et une législation de plus en plus stricte en matière de rejets et de nuisances pour l’environnement, il devient crucial de développer des matériaux structuraux qui permettent de réduire la consommation énergétique des véhicules de transport. Le projet BIOCOMPAL vise le développement de nouveaux matériaux allégés bio-basés à haute performance et à faible empreinte carbone, par une valorisation à très haute valeur ajoutée de la biomasse agricole et forestière régionale pour une application structurelle dans le secteur des transports (aéronautique, ferroviaire), dont les industries sont bien implantées dans la région transfrontalière. Les objectifs poursuivis par le projet se résument donc à produire des résines thermodurcissables innovantes de haute performance à base de phénols naturels renouvelables ; à élaborer de nouveaux designs de renforts textiles performants à base de fibres naturelles techniques issues des cultures agricoles locales de lin ; à développer un procédé de mise en œuvre et forme du composite à faible empreinte carbone utilisant les composés élaborés (i.e. la résine et le renfort textile) et à réaliser un démonstrateur pour valider la démarche du projet.

Faced with the new economic and environmental challenges of today’s world, as demonstrated by the vagaries of petroleum product prices and increasingly stringent legislation on emissions and harmful effects to the environment, it is becoming crucial to develop materials which reduce the energy consumption of transport vehicles. The BIOCOMPAL project aims to develop new lightweight high-performance bio-based materials with a low carbon footprint, through the high added value recovery of regional agricultural and forestry biomass for structural application in the transport sector (aeronautics, railways), of which the industries are well-established in the cross-border region. The objectives pursued by the project are therefore to produce innovative high-performance thermosetting resins based on renewable natural phenols; to develop new designs of high-performance textile reinforcements based on natural technical fibres from local agricultural flax crops; to develop a method of implementation and a form of low-carbon composite using the compounds developed (i.e. the resin and the textile reinforcement) and to produce a prototype to validate the approach of the project.

In het licht van de nieuwe economische en milieu-uitdagingen van de wereld van vandaag, zoals de schommelingen van de petroleumprijzen en de steeds strengere wetgeving op emissies en schadelijke effecten voor het milieu, wordt de ontwikkeling van materialen te ontwikkelen die het energieverbruik van transportvoertuigen verminderen cruciaal. Het project BIOCOMPAL beoogt de ontwikkeling van nieuwe, lichte, hoogpresterende, biogebaseerde materialen met een lage CO2-voetafdruk, door een valorisatie met hoge toegevoegde waarde van biomassa uit de regionale land- en bosbouw voor de structurele toepassing in de transportsector (luchtvaart, spoorwegen enz.). De industrieën die deze biomassa produceren, zijn goed aanwezig in de grensstreek. De doelstellingen van het project zijn dus als volgt: de productie van innovatieve, hoogpresterende thermohardende harsen op basis van hernieuwbare natuurlijke fenolen; de ontwikkeling van nieuwe ontwerpen van performante textielversterkingen op basis van natuurlijke technische vezels uit de lokale vlasteelt; de ontwikkeling van een implementatiemethode en een vorm van composieten met lage CO2-voetafdruk met gebruik van de ontwikkelde bestanddelen (i.e. het hars en de textielversterking); en de productie van een prototype om de aanpak van het project te valideren.

Achievements (FR):

Le projet BIOCOMPAL vise le développement de matériaux composites structuraux allégés de haute performance et faible empreinte carbone. Le projet permet de valoriser les fibres de lin et des produits issus de la biomasse agricole et forestière qui sont actuellement considérés comme des déchets. A ce titre, il peut intéresser les acteurs économiques à la recherche de nouvelles utilisations et de nouveaux marchés pour ce type de résidus organiques. Plus en aval les transformateurs et fabricants de matières seront intéressés par les développements du projet sur des produits tels que les fibres végétales, les tissus, les résines et liants biobasés, les additifs spécifiques pour fibres et résines, les pré-impregnés…. Plus en aval encore, les innovations technologiques du projet intéresseront les fabricants et fournisseurs de pièces composites qui pourront trouver dans BIOCOMPAL de nouvelles idées de matériaux performants. Enfin, les résultats de ce projet seront aussi utiles aux end-users, aux assembleurs et aux fabricants de véhicules ou produits finis à la recherche de matériaux allégés performants. Le projet BIOCOMPAL, ce sont les résultats et avancées suivants : -Un démonstrateur montrant le champ des possibilités pour la fabrication de pièces composites complexes -La culture et la caractérisation d’environ 25 variétés de lin au cours de la période 2016-2020 qui a permis d’établir une base de données des performances de ces différentes variétés de lin en termes de rendement et de propriétés mécaniques. -Un test permettant de calculer et déterminer les modules des fibres de lin, validé à partir d’éprouvettes de faisceaux de fibres imprégnées. -La réalisation des tissages de fibres de lin. -Des tests de traitements commerciaux d’ignifugation sur des renforts de lin. -La synthèse de résines thermodurcissables résistant intrinsèquement aux hautes températures à partir de composés issus de ressources renouvelables. -Une étude détaillée de la fabrication par RTM de composites à base de renfort de lin (Un modèle prenant en compte le gonflement et l’absorption de résine par les fibres végétales a été amélioré et validé par des résultats expérimentaux) -La fabrication de plusieurs produits permettant de promouvoir l’usage de matériaux bio-basés dans des applications structurelles et/ou qui recquièrent de hautes performances : -résines innovantes résistant aux hautes températures et issues de ressources renouvelables -nouveaux pré-imprégnés thermoformés, facilement processables, manipulables et adaptables sur toute sorte de support -composites allégés à base de renfort de lin et d’une formulation élaborée dans le cadre du projet -L’étude de la tenue au vieillissement thermique et à l’humidité de coupons composites élaborés dans le projet. -L’étude de la tenue en température et au feu des différents types de matériaux élaborés dans le projet à l’échelle laboratoire. -L’ajout d’une fonction de dépollution de l’air aux matériaux du projet BIOCOMPAL via une étude collaborative avec le projet TEXACOV. -Une étude ACV comparant des composites traditionnels verre/epoxy avec des composites bio-basés lin/bio-epoxy afin de déterminer les conditions favorables d’utilisation de ces composites bio-basés. En quelques chiffres, la communication du projet BIOCOMPAL, c’est : un site internet (www.biocompal.eu ), 7 vidéos et 15 documents (prospectus, brochures, posters…) de promotion du projet, 1 chapitre de livre, 9 articles scientifiques publiés dans des revues spécialisées avec lecture par des pairs, 2 autres publications en cours de finalisation, 1 thèse, 4 évènements organisés, 16 participations à des congrès et symposiums internationaux, plus de 70 communications de vulgarisation et plus de 1000 personnes sensibilisées dont 32 entreprises qui ont marqué leur intérêt aux développements du projet et 7 qui ont participé activement au projet. Le projet BIOCOMPAL, c’est aussi un consortium qui propose des conseils et accompagnements techniques aux entreprises et acteurs économiques ayant une activité en lien avec l’industrie des transports, le bâtiment, le design mobilier et les acteurs du secteur agricole et forestier dans les domaines ci-dessous : -Conception, synthèse et formulation de colles et résines résistant intrinsèquement aux hautes températures et au feu à partir de composés phénoliques issus de la biomasse agricole et/ou forestière (contact Leïla Bonnaud : leila.bonnaud@materianova.be ) -Culture du lin pour des applications techniques (contact Lies Willaert : lies.willaert@inagro.be ) -Design et préparation de renforts textiles à usage matériaux (contact Frederik Goethals : frg@centexbel.be ) -Fabrication de pré-imprégnés et matériaux composites allégés, optimisation et modélisation des procédés de mise en œuvre (contact Prof. Chung-Hae Park : chung-hae.park@imt-lille-douai.fr )

Achievements (EN):

The BIOCOMPAL project aims at the development of low-carbon, lightened structural materials. The project allows the valorisation of flax fibres and products from agricultural and forestry biomass that are currently considered waste. As such, it may interest economic players in the search for new uses and markets for this type of organic residues. Further downstream processors and material manufacturers will be interested in the developments of the project on products such as vegetable fibers, fabrics, biobased resins and binders, specific additives for fibers and resins, pre-impregnated.... Further downstream, the technological innovations of the project will interest manufacturers and suppliers of composite parts who will be able to find new ideas for high-performance materials in BIOCOMPAL. Finally, the results of this project will also be useful for end-users, assemblers and manufacturers of vehicles or finished products looking for efficient lightweight materials. The BIOCOMPAL project is the following results and advances: —A demonstrator showing the field of possibilities for the manufacture of complex composite parts -The cultivation and characterisation of about 25 varieties of flax during the period 2016-2020 that allowed to establish a database of the performance of these different varieties of flax in terms of yield and mechanical properties. —A test to calculate and determine flax fibre modules, validated from impregnated fibre beam specimens. —The realisation of flax fibre weavings. —Tests of commercial firefighting treatments on flax reinforcements. —The synthesis of thermoset resins intrinsically resistant to high temperatures from compounds from renewable resources. —A detailed study of the RTM manufacturing of flax reinforcement composites (A model taking into account the swelling and absorption of resin by vegetable fibres has been improved and validated by experimental results) -Manufacturing several products to promote the use of bio-based materials in structural and/or high performance applications: —innovative resins resistant to high temperatures and from renewable resources — new thermoformed pre-impregnated, easily processable, manipulable and adaptable on any kind of support — lightened components based on flax reinforcement and a formulation developed as part of the project -The study of the resistance to thermal aging and humidity of composite coupons developed in the project. —The study of the temperature and fire maintenance of the different types of materials developed in the project at the laboratory scale. —The addition of an air clean-up function to the materials of the BIOCOMPAL project via a collaborative study with the TEXACOV project. —An ACV study comparing traditional glass/epoxy composites with bio-based flax/bio-epoxy composites to determine the favorable conditions of use of these bio-based composites. In a few figures, the communication of the BIOCOMPAL project is: a website (www.biocompal.eu), 7 videos and 15 documents (prospectus, brochures, posters...) promoting the project, 1 book chapter, 9 scientific articles published in specialised peer-reading journals, 2 other publications in the process of finalisation, 1 thesis, 4 organised events, 16 participations in international congresses and symposia, more than 70 popular communications and more than 1000 people sensitised including 32 companies who have expressed interest in the development of the project and 7 actively participated in the project. Il s’agit du nombre de plateformes de compétences créées entre la France et la Belgique qui seront encore actives après la fin du projet via de nouveaux projets collaboratifs et la mise à disposition de services, de formations et/ou savoir-faire transfrontaliers auprès des secteurs industriels et agricoles inter-régionaux.

Number of cross-border collaborations still up and running after the end of the project: 2. It consists of the number of skills platforms created between France and Belgium that will still be active after the end of the project via new collaborative projects and the provision of cross-border services, training and/or know-how among the interregional industrial and agricultural sectors.

Aantal grensoverschrijdende samenwerkingen die ook na afloop van het project nog actief zijn: 2. Dit is het aantal tussen Frankrijk en België gecreëerde competentieplatformen die ook na afloop van het project actief zullen blijven via nieuwe samenwerkingsprojecten en de verstrekking van grensoverschrijdende diensten, opleiding en/of knowhow in de interregionale industrie en landbouw.

Nombre d'entreprises bénéficiant d'un soutien : 12. Parmi les entreprises qui seront informés des résultats des travaux de R&D, il est estimé que 10 entreprises pourront bénéficier des résultats sous différentes formes. Nombre d’entreprises participant à des projets de recherche transfrontaliers : 3. Au minimum une entreprise par versant sera partenaire d’un projet européen « public-privé ». Nombre d'entreprises bénéficiant d'un soutien : 12. Il s’agit du nombre d’entreprises/agriculteurs/sociétés d’exploitation agricole ou coopératives qui bénéficient de la communication d’informations techniques, conseils personnalisés, consultance de la part des opérateurs du projet sur les développements produits et technologiques dudit projet. Une estimation du coût de chacune des prestations des opérateurs est réalisée en suivant la règle des minimis. Nombre d’entreprises participant à des projets de recherche transfrontaliers : 3. Il s’agit du nombre d’entreprises/agriculteurs/sociétés d’exploitation agricole ou coopératives qui vont participer activement au projet en : -testant ou utilisant des produits et/ou technologies développées dans le projet -mettant à disposition des échantillons pour la réalisation d’essais et tests exploratoires par les opérateurs du projet. Nombre de sessions de formation conjointes : 3. Il s’agit du nombre de séminaires, workshops transfrontaliers à visée pédagogique pour un public d’industriels, d’agriculteurs ou d’étudiants. Nombre d'entreprises bénéficiant d'un soutien pour introduire des produits nouveaux pour l'entreprise : 0. Dans le cas du projet BIOCOMPAL : des démonstrateurs vont être fabriqués pour assurer la communication et la promotion des produits, des technologies et témoigner du savoir-faire du consortium transfrontalier auprès des industriels. Aucune recette n’a été envisagée au cours du projet. Les produits nouveaux seront introduits sur le marché après la fin du projet. Nombre d'établissements de recherche participant à des projets de recherche transfrontaliers : 6. Il s’agit du nombre d’instituts, universités ou centres de recherche constituant le consortium du projet et du nombre d’instituts, universités ou centres de recherche ne faisant pas partie du consortium qui vont réaliser des tests et analyses spécifiques non prévues dans le projet sur des échantillons développés dans le cadre du projet afin d’apporter une nouvelle plus-value aux produits développés dans le projet.
