Empowering ADRION tourism sector innovation is the way to safeguard the continuation of socio-economic growth of the area, tourism representing one of the most important industries in the area with four countries (Italy, Greece, Croatia, Slovenia) included in the world top 40 in 2015 (ref. Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index - TTCI). Tourism in the area has to cope with changes in demand and tourist behavior, new emerging markets and socio-economic crises. The project aims at improving the innovation capability of ADRION tourism sector, relying heavily on innovative products, processes and services that can supplement natural and cultural offerings. The project will network the transnational ADRION quadruple helix tourism community into an Adriatic Ionian Tourism Technology Platform with active involvement throughout the project. A Tourism Innovation Observatory will provide a platform for modeling ADRION innovative tourism, equipped with a Tourism Innovation Decision Support System providing the ability to evaluate the impact of potential interventions on the competitiveness and sustainability of tourism destinations, structures and services. Based on a wide consensus built in the area among quadruple helix stakeholders a Strategic Agenda on Innovation in Tourism will be produced offering the strategy for tourism innovation enhancement and combined with an Action Plan issuing policy recommendations and guidelines for investments as well as potential accessible funding. It is expected that the project will simulate a paradigm shift in tourism policies and investments through its innovative approach and enrolled tools. On the other hand it is expected to provide a permanent and lasting effect in regional and local strategies on tourism by technology transfer and capacity building of both public and private sectors and leading to a regional tourism innovation system in the area.

Achievements (EN):

What do we mean when we talk about innovation in the tourism sector? Generally speaking, this is a very broad topic spanning from technology to creative initiatives. Apparently, innovation is largely present in this sector, but how can we measure its impact on the market as well as on the territories? The ADRION funded project Innoxenia responded to this challenge by developing a comprehensive database called, rightly, “Tourism Innovation Observatory”. The project has set up this platform with the aim to collect data from different sources targeting the tourism destinations of the Adriatic-Ionian area, in order to analyse trends, and ultimately to draw some considerations which can help operators to improve their business. What is the Tourist Innovation Observatory? Do you want to know the average price of hotels in a specific place of the Adriatic-Ionian region? The tourism flow in relevant destinations including business arrivals? The number of archeological sites and museums? Here you are. The Tourist Innovation Observatory collects data on the tourism industry targeting the most visited destinations of the Adriatic-Ionian region. Data are classified on the basis of several indicators, including enterprises using a voluntary certification for environmental measures, basically the ones which are supposed to be “sustainable” according to ETIS, the European Tourism Indicators System for sustainable destination management. Unlike other similar databases, the platform collects a quite high amount of web-data taken from online touristic sources like Trip Advisor or Booking. This feature allows to benchmark from single destinations and municipalities up to countries according to specific parameters and performances. The database is also a repository for Best Practices When a single destination is underperforming (according to the standard value given by the ADRION partners’ area), the system automatically shows best practices and solutions adopted in other countries to overcome those criticalities. Innovation can lead to a reduction of pricing: An interesting finding, which came up in the analysis of the data collected in the Observatory, shows that innovation combined with good ratings provided by the costumers may lead, for instance, to cheaper accommodations. Replicability of the result: The Tourism Innovation Observatory has been populated by Innoxenia partners during the project life-cycle, but it was designed to be also accessible, upon registration and single user login, to any organisation which is willing to include data on further areas, destinations or countries. The aim is to produce a Big Data repository that can provide the opportunity to better analyse mega trends and ease political decisions on the tourism industry. How the project involved the community of operators of the tourism sector: Dissemination events and Innoxenia Cafè: The project has constantly kept involved the tourism operators by organising get-togethers called “Innoxenia Cafè” in order to exchange experiences and, more importantly, collect surveys which served as a basis for part of the data stored in the Observatory. Moreover, each partner organised dissemination events for socio-economic operators of the sector to showcase project results, including the Observatory. Thanks to structured networking activities as well as to capacity building events held in the partner’s countries, InnoXenia has contributed to increase the awareness of the target audience about the relation between innovation and sustainable development policies.

Expected Results (EN): Level of capacity of key innovation actors to be effectively involved in transnational actions for the development of a regional Innovation system

Expected Outputs (EN):

The project will create a transnational networked tourism community in the ADRION macroregion as a result of the Adriatic Ionian Tourism Technology Platform (AITTP). This community will comprise all relevant actors of the quadruple helix in the macroregion, coming from academia / research, tourism structures and services, SMEs, policy makers and the public sectors and civil society organizations. The establishment of the Tourism Innovation Observatory (TIO) equipped by highly innovative Tourism Innovation Decision Support System (TIDSS), will enable technology transfer among the members of AITTP networked tourism community contributing to the programme result indicator and increasing their capacity to be effectively involved in transnational actions for developing a regional innovation system in the tourism sector in the area. TIDSS will enable benchmarking of innovative interventions on the competitiveness and sustainability of tourism destinations, structures and services. Benchmarking results along with capitalization of previous project results and wide consensus building of the AITTP transnational networked tourism community, will provide the material for a Strategic Agenda for Innovation in Tourism for ADRION macroregion and relevant action plan. The capitalization of this Agenda and Action Plan is relevant to their uptake by both policy makers in the public sector in the area, integrating policy recommendations to their implementation of regional measures and actions, and tourism structures and services in the public or private sector, taking into account investment priority guidelines for their future investments. This uptake will also contribute to the programme result indicator by increasing the capacity of both the public and private sector in the area to develop a lasting regional tourism innovation system.
