Description (EN):

The city of Sombor, situated in the north west part of the Republic of Serbia, and the city of Baja, situated approximately 30 km-s from the southern Hungarian border to Serbia, have been twin cities since 1960. In accordance with high level of coop eration that exists between them there is a significant guideline for improvement of the CBC development and improvement of traffic infrastructure, including the border crossing Bački Breg – Hercegszanto. Prequalification and upgrading of this borde r crossing point to both passenger and freight traffic and the improvement of connection roads will enable this region to be better connected to Port of Baja, Danube cargo port, as well as to the Hungarian M6 motorway, which is further connected with a branch of the fifth Pan-European corridor and Pan-European corridor VII. The Project will provide easier accessibility and faster and safer transport for both passengers and goods in the West Bačka District as well as throughout the whole Bács-Kis kun region. Development of infrastructure would contribute to the reduction of the differences between the developed and the underdeveloped regions and settlements as to the general quality of life, economic conditions, education, culture, health-car e and social welfare. This road connects two countries not only infrastructurally, but also from a community point of view. The importance of this project for CBC is confirmed through initiation of the procedure for amending the Hungarian government decree of the development infrastructure in the border area. In the new legal framework the road project Baja-Sombor will be on the priority list of infrastructure roads between the two countries. Furthermore, the border crossing points at Horgos-Rös zke and Kelebija-Tompa, notorious choke points during Xmas, winter and summer holidays, will be relieved of heavy traffic, as freight traffic will be possible through realization of the project at Bački Breg - Hercegszanto border crossing.
